This study empirically examines herd behavior for fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) sector stocks under varied market return conditions and the period during the global financial crisis and its aftermath. We examine the sample of stocks trading on the Nifty FMCG Index of the Indian equity market from January 2008 up to December 2018 using the dispersion measure of cross sectional absolute deviation and examine its relationship with the market return to explore herd phenomenon. Quantile regression estimate is used and the results of the study validate rational asset pricing models as the sector does not display herding. In contrast, anti-herd behavior at lower and median quantile values is observed. A possible reason can be the non-cyclical nature of the industry where investors rely more on the fundamentals rather than crowd chasing. We also findthe absence of herd phenomenon during the market asymmetries of bull and bear phases, extreme movements, the period of the global financial crisis, and afterward. We further examine herding under the impact of the information technology (IT) industry and conclude that significant return movements in IT sector impact dispersions in the FMCG industry. Also, there is a co-varying risk between the two sectors confirming the spillover in an integrated market.

Most companies in Korea that are implementing six sigma programs evaluate belt's project performance based on their own evaluation systems. Financial performance is a major criterion to evaluate project performance. New project evaluation systems which are based on not only financial performance but also non-financial performance need to be presented for better performance system. The study presents the integration system of balanced scorecard and six sigma project evaluation systems to show balanced view points of performance. Each evaluation index of four view points are presented in the study and could be utilized for alternative project evaluation systems.

While the demand for ASP(Application Service Provider) focused on small and medium enterprises who are fully aware of needs of ICT readiness has been increasing, those who consider to adopt ASP are wondering whether their performance would be actually successful if they did. These concerns can be an important standard of judgement, when introducing new information systems, by analyzing ROI(Return on Investment) on the current enterprises. Therefore, to review the feasibility of investing IT and measuring the performance, this study suggests a framework for ROI analysis which estimates IT investment performance, through multi-criteria approach on both financial performance index and non-financial one. We applied methodology on ASP-based IT investment performance evaluation to sample manufacturing companies under 50 employees and deduced the main implications to be considered when introducing the system.
The effects of program trading halts system (sidecar) on information asymmetry of program trading stocks, index arbitrage stocks, and non-index arbitrage stocks in the Korean stock market are examined. Effective spread and number of program trade of each stock are used as proxy variables for information asymmetry. The main results are as follows; Firstly, we find that effective spreads of program trading stocks in the post-halt period decrease significantly following the halt period. This means that sidecar has the effect of reducing information asymmetry in the Korean stock market. Secondly, the mitigation effect of information asymmetry of program trading stocks works only in buy-program trading stocks, but not in sell-program trading stocks. Thirdly, the results show that there are no distinct differences for index arbitrage group and non-index arbitrage group surrounding the sidecar events. In other words, program trading halts system has a mitigating effect of information asymmetry in not only index arbitrage trading stocks but also non-index arbitrage stocks. Fourthly, this mitigation effect works only in buy-sample not in sell-sample like in program trading stocks. And lastly, the analyses result of number of program trade shows that number of program trade of almost of sample stocks increases after the sidecar events. This implies that the information asymmetry is not fully resolved during the halt period and the effect of news inducing sidecar is continuing after the event.
Purpose - This paper empirically investigates the relationship between the corporate value chain and performance of non- financial businesses of South Korean stock market companies. It aims to explore the evidence that can be used to infer the relationship between value chains and corporate performance in the case of firms forming a value chain with other companies with the means of an equity investment or a special business relationship. Design/methodology - Non-financial corporations listed from 2011 to 2017 on the securities market of South Korea are analyzed. The data used for analysis are found for transactions with the related party by year for all the corporations of non-financial industries in the securities market. Multiple analysis attempts are conducted including the relationship between the value chain and productivity, corporate value, risk-adjusted corporate value, and mediation effects of productivity. The empirical model employs sixteen variables including the value chain index which identifies its impact on various aspects of business performances. Findings - The results of this study clearly supports the phenomenon that corporate productivity and value are enhanced when the corporation expands its value chain established with domestic related firms and overseas companies. Such a positive effect is statistically significant even after the possible risk factors that accompany the expansion of value chain were considered, and productivity plays the role as a medicating variable in the effect of the value chain on the corporation values. Originality/value - The findings of this study confirms that domestic companies' expansion of their value chain centered on the related firms overseas that helped them in terms of the maximization of their productivity and corporate values. This study shows that Korean government's policy on expanding the corporate GVC can enhance the productivity and value of firms. The expansion of value chain and its impact on business performance has not been explored thoroughly, although it is getting more and more important in the global trade operation.
We examine whether new derivatives on KOSPI 200 affect volatility asymmetry of KOSPI 200 portfolio, relative to the carefully matched non-KOSPI 200 portfolio. To test the effect or new derivatives trading, we use GJR-GARCH model and newly developed Volatility Ratio(down-market volatility to up-market volatility ratio). Our results show that KOSPI 200 portfolio experiences lower volatility asymmetry than non-KOSPI 200 portfolio after the trading of new derivatives on KOSPI 200, especially after the introduction of stock index options(KOSPI 200 options). For non-KOSPI portfolio, no significant reduction in volatility asymmetry occurred when trading of stock index options began. Also, we find that in the period of after January 1999, the period of after do-regulations and Financial Crisis in the Korean capital market, volatility asymmetry of stock markets was significantly decreased. This means that level of volatility asymmetry is closely related to the level of market regulations. Further, the results of the paper show that leverage effect and changes in foreign exchange ratio can be good candidates for explaining the stylized volatility asymmetry in the Korean stock market.

The purpose of this paper is to review the quality of corporate governance from the prior empirical literature. This study finds that most of the researchers developed the self structured corporate governance index and few researchers used the corporate governance index provided by rating agencies. This study also finds that there is no uniform basis to measure the corporate governance quality and observed the variation in terms of overall and individual attributes of corporate governance; sub-indices of corporate governance; scoring system; weighted and un-weighted method; statistical method; time period; financial and non financial companies; code of corporate governance; listing requirement; disclosure practices; legal environment; firms characteristics; and country perspective. This study also observed that overall corporate governance quality is very low in most of the studies and even quality of corporate governance varies in the firms within the same country. This study recommends that the boundary of corporate governance quality should be defined based on the agreed set of rules and regulation, code of governance and practices. This study also suggests that the regulator and policy makers should more emphasize on code of corporate governance and regulatory framework and monitoring to improve the quality of corporate governance.
Purpose - Prior studies have found that the characteristics of managers, corporate governance structure, corporate social responsibility and so on affect firm value. This study explores whether managerial overconfidence affects firm value through empirical analysis. Design/methodology/approach - Korean-listed non-financial companies from 2011 - 2017 are collected as the research sample. Firm value is measured by Tobin's Q, and managerial overconfidence is measured using a composite index encompassing various financial data. OLS and fixed effect model are used to investigate the relationship between managerial overconfidence and firm value. Findings - Managerial overconfidence is positively associated with firm value. Additional analysis reveals the following: (1) In the three subsamples of large, backbone, and small- and medium-sized enterprises, managerial overconfidence is beneficial to firm values. (2) Managerial overconfidence increases firm value on the t+1 year. Research implications or Originality - We use a comprehensive index with higher trust and feasibility to measure manager overconfidence and empirically confirm that managerial overconfidence can become a factor to improve firm value. Thus, it is necessary for shareholders to adopt an objective and neutral attitude and reasonably understand the psychological characteristics of managers when selecting CEOs. In addition, it is necessary to continue to optimize the measurement method of managerial overconfidence.

Balanced Scorecard(BSC) is one of the ways to estimate the achievement results of enterprises which, beyond the simple financial index traditionally used for enterprise achievement result management system, aims to estimate and manage the key perspectives for the future and goal achievement of enterprises as financial perspectives, customer perspectives, internal business perspectives, learning and growth perspectives with a fully consistent and balanced measure, and moreover manage their relationships regarding cause and effect on its basis. Introduction of BSC can be a profound implication for management strategies not only in that its introduction itself has numerous direct effects but also in the way of understanding whether or not its sequential relations exist. Thus this study focused on if the introduction of BSC is effectual, and if there exist any time-lag sequential relations between the effects. The results of the this study indicate that the introduction of BSC has positive effects on the internal business perspectives, learning and growth perspectives, financial perspectives, with the last aspect lasting longer. After dividing perspectives of BSC into leading indicator and lagging indicator, the analysis on if there was some relationships between two indicators was done. As a result, the introduction makes internal process improve first, which has positive effects on financial performance next.

The study investigates one of the long-standing, but still controversial issues in modern finance from the international and domestic perspectives. That is, financial components and differences on corporate profitability are identified and compared under the primary hypotheses. Empirical research settings include the sample data as KOSPI-listed chaebol firms, time reference covering the post-era of the global financial turmoil and two differently defined profitability indices measured by the market- and the book-value bases. A majority of total 7 explanatory variables except firm size and leverage ratio reveal their statistically significant power to explain profitability indices for the chaebol firms in the first hypothesis. The results are generally compatible with those obtained from their counterparts of non-chaebol firms. In the second hypothesis applying multinomial logistic model, the chaebol firms are classified into three groups according to the level of profitability. It is then confirmed that variables to represent the market-valued debt ratio, business risk and growth potential are financially discriminating factors among the three groups. The study may provide a new vision to identify financial factors of corporate profitability for Korean chaebol firms after the global financial crisis, which can enhance the benefits of interested parties at the government or corporate level in a virtuous cycle.
