  • Micellar enhanced ultrafiltration (MEUF) was used to remove cadmium from an aqueous solution using sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) as a surfactant. Operational parameters such as initial permeate flux, retentate pressure, initial cadmium concentration, pH solution, molecular weight cut-off (MWCO), and molar ratio of cadmium to SDS were investigated. Removal efficiency of cadmium from an aqueous solution increased with an increase of retentate pressure, pH solution and molar ratio of cadmium to SDS, and decreased with an increase of initial permeate flux. Higher removal efficiency of cadmium from the aqueous solution was achieved using lower MWCO (smaller membrane pore size). Under optimized experimental condition, cadmium removal efficiency reached 74.6 % within an hour. Using MEUF-ACF hybrid process the removal efficiency of both cadmium and SDS was found to be over 90%.

  • The procedures currently used for determining microbiological quality of natural mineral water recommend filtration through membrane filters. In this study, we evaluated the effect of vacuum pressure for the accurate detection of bacteria from water samples seeded with Escherichia coli. We observed that the number of E. coli detected increased with increasing vacuum pressure. In order to examine the retention rate of bacteria in the holes of the membranes under the different pressures, the membrane filters were removed after filtration, washed with sterile water by vortexing, and placed on m-Endo agar plates. With all the filters tested, the number of E. coli retained within the filters at negative 600 mmHg was approximately 10 to $20\%$ higher than that obtained with 100 mmHg. These results demonstrate that the vacuum pressure exerted during the filtration procedure may affect the fixation of bacteria into some portions of openings in the membrane filter.

  • The perilla oil is painted to the wooden cultural properties of protection of wood and pigment. But that is happened to discolor and gather mold because of the long drying time. So we were put to the test for the improvement of this matter. The result is follows;1. The perilla oil, do not parched domestic Perilla japonica, add to the Japanese acid clay, later passing through the filter paper that the pore size is less than $7\mum$ 2. If the perilla oil add to the antiseptic of Thiazole origin, the mold is suppressed.3. In the painting of perilla oil, the existing Dan-chung paints one time (Luster generation in the more than two times) and the non-existing Dan-Chung paints two times.

  • Porous composite of $Al_2O_3$ and AIN based mullite and SiC can be prepared by alumium reaction synthesis and atmosphere controllied sintering in order to improve the durability of a gas filter body. The porous $Al_2O_3$-AIN-mullite, which has a strength of 168 kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and porosity of 51.59%, could be obtained by stmospheric firing at $1600^{\circ}C$ and the porous $Al_2O_3$-AIN-SiC with a porosity of 33% and strength of 977 kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$, could also be prepared. The average pore size has been changed from 0.2$\mu\textrm{m}$ in a reduction atmosphere and to 2$\mu\textrm{m}$ in an air atmosphere, respectively.

  • High purity carbon nano fibers/tubes (CNF/Ts) which contain 97% pure graphitic carbon are prepared by a new catalytic method. These carbon nano fibers/tubes are ready to use without any further purification. The striking feature of this method is the production of carbon nano fibers/tubes of narrow distribution range. The developed catalytic method also produces pure hydrogen. An additional advantage of this catalytic method is that catalyst can be reused without reactivation. Ni:Cu catalyst system is embodied into SCHOTT-DURAN filter disc of large pore size (40-100 mm). Due to the production of hydrogen in the reaction catalyst stability is enhanced and deactivation process is considerably slowed down.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate quartz concentrations in airborne respirable dust and particle size-related quartz concentrations. Methods: Respirable dust samples were collected using a 10 mm Dorr-Oliver nylon cyclone equipped with a 37 mm, $5{\mu}m$ pore size PVC filter. Dust samples were collected with a Marple's personal cascade impactor from stone grinding operations in five stone-related business located in the Gyeongsangbuk-do area. Results: The geometric mean of quartz concentration in the respirable dust was $0.170mg/m^3$, and the rate of exceeding the Korean Occupational Exposure Limit(KOEL) was 93.3%. The quartz concentration by particle size shows that it was the highest($0.115mg/m^3$) in stage 5($3.50-6.00{\mu}m$), which corresponds with the size of respirable particle. The smaller the particle sizes were, the higher quartz the content became. The mass fractions of inhalable, thoracic, and respirable dust were 72.1%, 36.0%, and 14.4%. Conclusions: The rate of the quartz concentration in respirable dust from stone grinding operations exceeding the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists Threshold Limit Values was 100%, which means proper work environmental management is required through regular working environmental measurements. Given that the stone grinding operations had a higher small size dust concentrations, there is a need to reduce respirable dust, such as through wet operation and local exhaust ventilation.

  • In this work, we have prepared the filter papers with the pitch-based activated carbon fibers and the binder fibers using wet-laid process. The influence of the binder fiber on the porosity of the filter papers has been investigated by using nitrogen adsorption isotherms at 77 K and a scanning electron microscope (SEM). As a result, the specific surface area has increased with an decrease in the content of binder fiber. It has been shown that the optimum ratio of pitch-based activated carbon fibers and the binder fibers is 70:30, resulting in high porosity, excellent bonding strength, large specific surface area ($650.4m^2/g$) and high noxious gas removal efficiency (86.9%). In addition, it has been observed that the mean pore size distribution of the fiber papers has not been affected by the binder fiber.

  • The filtration effects of glass membrane filters and hollow fiber membranes with different pore size to prevent the haze of a commercial foxtail millet Yakju were investigated. The most particles(haze precusors) present in the Yakju were removed by using 1.2 $\mu\textrm{m}$ glass membrane filter. In case of using 0.45$\mu\textrm{m}$ hollow fiber membrane system, the permeate flux on the Yakju filtration was calculated to 342.8 lmh. During the 3 month storage at 4$^{\circ}C$ and room temperature for each 48 hrs in turn, alittle fine haze was observed from the Yakju even if it was filtered by using 0.7 $\mu\textrm{m}$ glass membrane filter. Anything of haze was, however, observed from the Yakju filtered by using all of hollow fiber membranes. Therefore, the 0.45$\mu\textrm{m}$ hollow fiber membrane system was effective as a final filtration process of the Yakju.
