Purpose: To compare the standard deviation of gray levels on digital subtracted images obtained by different dental subtraction programs. Materials and Methods: Paired periapical films were taken at the lower premolar and molar areas of the phantoms involving human mandible. The bite registration group used Rinn XCP equipment and bite registration material, based on polyvinyl siloxane, for standardization. The no bite registration group used only Rinn XCP equipment. The periapical film images were digitized at 1200 dpi resolution and 256 gray levels by a flat bed scanner with transparency unit. Dental digital subtraction programs used for this study were Subtractor (Biomedisys Co., Korea) and Emago (Oral Diagnostic Systems, The Netherlands). To measure the similarities between the subtracted images, the standard deviations of the gray levels were obtained using a histogram of subtracted images, which were then analyzed statistically. Results: Subtracted images obtained by using the Emago program without manual selection of corresponding points showed the lowest standard deviation of gray levels (p<0.01). And the standard deviation of gray levels was lower in subtracted images in the group of a bite registration than in the group of no use of bite registration (p < 0.01). Conclusion: Digital radiographic subtraction without manual selection of reference points was found to be a convenient and superior method.
We investigated the structural geometry of thirty-eight Korean femurs. The purpose of this study is to identify major geometrical differences between Korean femurs and others that we believe belong to Caucasians so that we would be able to get insights into the femoral component design that fits Asians including Koreans. We utilized computerized nomography (CT) images of femurs extracted from cadavers. The CT images were transformed into bitmap data by using a film scanner, and then analyzed by using a commercially available software called Image v.1.0 and a Macintosh loci computer. The resulting data were compared with already published data. The major results show that the geometry of the Korean femurs is significantly different from that of Caucasians: (1) the anteversion angle and the canal (tare Index are greater by the amount of approximately 8" and 0.5, respectively, (2) the shape of the isthmus cross section is more round , and (3) the distance between the lesser trochanter and the proximal border of the isthmus is shorter by about 15 mm. The results suggested that the femoral component suitable for Asians should be dif- ferent (rom the currently-used components designed and manufactured mostly by European or American companies.

We have developed and used BISS as a radiation detector to verify patient dose and determine the physical characteristics of beams used in Stereotatic Radio Surgery(SRS) and Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy(IMRT). In order to confirm the function and accuracy of our BISS, we simulate our measurements by BISS under the radiation of 6MV photons from a Varian Clinac 21EX equipped with a 60 leaf pairs MLC. For the simulation based on the Monte Carlo algorithm, which remains the most comprehensive and accurate theoretical method to verify beam profiles, we use the BEAM code. Compared with the measurements by BISS, our simulation of variously shaped phantom measurements show good agreements. Our simulation results can be used as a theoretical standard to compare and confirm measurements by BISS and other dosimeters such as ultramicro cylindrical ionization chamber(UCIC) and radiographic film.
The purpose of this study was to compare the staining ratio on the enamel surface following the use of chlorhexidine mouthwash and the chlorhexidine varnish application. Labial and lingual surfaces of maxillary and mandibular incisors of adults were selected to evaluate the staining ratio. The control group was consisted of 8 individuals, the experimental group 1 and 2 were consisted of 50 each. Prophylaxis with pumice was performed to remove the stain already established on the enamel surface of all groups. The group 1 was asked to use chlorhexidine mouthwash(Hexadent, chlorhexidine gluconate 1ml/100ml) for a minute twice a day. The chlorhexidine $varnish^{(R)}$($Chlorzoin^{(R)}$, consisted of solution 1(10% chlorhexidine acetate) and solution 2(polyurethane sealant)) was applied on the enamel surfaces of the group 2. After 4 weeks of experiment, intraoral photogragh of tooth surfaces were taken in order to record the stained area on the enamel of the control and the experimental groups. Outline of teeth and the stained area in the photographs was traced on the OHP film. Scanner and computer processor were used to calculate stained surface ratio.
Scan 간격은 3mm 이었으며 FOV (Field of View)는 CT의 경우 35cm, MR 의 경우 28cm 이었다. 본 연구의 결과는 치료계획시 PTV(Planning Target Volume)를 결정할 때 반드시 고려되어야 한다.
The intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) with a multileaf collimator (MLC) requires the conversion of a radiation fluence map into a leaf sequence file that controls the movement of the MLC during radiation treatment of patients. Patient dose verification is clinically one of the most important parts in the treatment delivery of the radiation therapy. The three dimensional (3D) reconstruction of dose distribution delivered to the target helps to verify patient dose and to determine the physical characteristics of beams used in IMRT. A new method is presented for the pretreatment dosimetric verification of two dimensional distributions of photon intensity by means of Beam Intensity Scanner System (BISS) as a radiation detector with a custom-made software for dose calculation of fluorescence signals from scintillator. The scintillator is used to produce fluorescence from the irradiation of 6MV photons on a Varian Clinac 21EX. The BISS reproduces 3D- relative dose distribution from the digitized fluoroscopic signals obtained by digital video camera-based scintillator(DVCS) device in the IMRT. For the intensity modulated beams (IMBs), the calculations of absorbed dose are performed in absolute beam fluence profiles which are used for calculation of the patient dose distribution. The 3D-dose profiles of the IMBs with the BISS were demonstrated by relative measurements of photon beams and shown good agreement with radiographic film. The mechanical and dosimetric properties of the collimating of dynamic and/or step MLC system alter the generated intensity. This is mostly due to leaf transmission, leaf penumbra and geometry of leaves. The variations of output according to the multileaf opening during the irradiation need to be accounted for as well. These phenomena result in a fluence distribution that can be substantially different from the initial and calculative intensity modulation and therefore, should be taken into account by the treatment planning for accurate dose calculations delivered to the target volume in IMRT.
Of the vast number of plant taxa in the world, the wood is one of the most useful resources. It is important to identify the fibers of wood and pulp for the plant taxonomy and for the uses, but we do not have enough information on them, on them, especially for the computerizd data. The fiber identification is one of the difficult tasks. In addition to the plant taxonomy and the fiber-using industries, such identification is also important in many other fields, including education. document examiners, etc. For these purpose, the fibers should be exactly distinguished. The TISS system I have programed to identify various woods would also be useful in the identification of fibers by the genus and species in the features of unknown samples and in searching the features of a species based on its scientific name. Such searching programs are being developed in many other countries with a view to searching for the species name by using the features of the cells of the woody materials. With the survey of all the available literature, the features of the fibers of 124 species both of softwood and hardwood were examined under the electron and optical microscopies. Each species were coded and carded by the feature, and the databases were built. The microscopic were inputted into a personal computer program called and by a slide film scanner. The new computer program called TISS 2 was developed using C computer language. Korean language fonts were added to the TISS 2. The TISS 2 can be in adding and searching a image of fiber features both of a known fiber and an unknown fiber. The databases were corded for the DELTA system with was developed by Dallwitz and Paine in Australia, 1986.
Purpose: The aims of the present study are to determine the optimum compression rate in terms of file size reduction and diagnostic quality of the images after compression and evaluate the transmission speed of original or each compressed image. Materials and Methods: The material consisted of 24 extracted human premolars and molars. The occlusal surfaces and proximal surfaces of the teeth had a clinical disease spectrum that ranged from sound to varying degrees of fissure discoloration and cavitation. The images from Digora system were exported in TIFF and the images from conventional intraoral film were scanned and digitalized in TIFF by Nikon SF-200 scanner (Nikon, Japan). And six compression factors were chosen and applied on the basis of the results from a pilot study. The total number of images to be assessed were 336. Three radiologists assessed the occlusal and proximal surfaces of the teeth with 5-rank scale. Finally diagnosed as either sound or carious lesion by one expert oral pathologist. And sensitivity, specificity and k value for diagnostic agreement was calculated. Also the area (Az) values under the ROC curve were calculated and paired t-test and oneway ANOVA test was performed. Thereafter, transmission time of the image files of the each compression level was compared with that of the original image files. Results: No significant difference was found between original and the corresponding images up to 7% (1 : 14) compression ratio for both the occlusal and proximal caries (p<0.05). JPEG3 (1 : 14) image files are transmitted fast more than 10 times, maintained diagnostic information in image, compared with original image files. Conclusion: 1 : 14 compressed image file may be used instead of the original image and reduce storage needs and transmission time.
