  • A simple procedure to add and remove material simultaneously along the boundary is developed to optimize the shape of a two dimensional elastic problems and to minimize the maximum von Mises stress. The results for the two dimensional infinite plate with a hole, are close to the theoretical results of an elliptical boundary and the stress concentration is reduced by half for the fillet problem. The proposed shape optimization method, when compared with existing derivative based shape optimization methods has many features such as simplicity, applicability, flexibility, computational efficiency and a much better control on stresses on the design boundary.

  • In this study, Automatic design program creates 3D solid models and constructs them. The method of making assembly model is two. One assembles the element made in automatic design program with hand, the other develops the automatic design program for creating assembly model. Automatic design program improves the convenience of user. In creating gears, involute ewe and Trochoidal fillet curve are made by mathematical development.

  • General metal welding occurs distortion. Also, reducing distortion is required much cost. Therefore, the purpose of this study is optimization of welding conditions to reduce distortion in welding of monolithic rack housing for modular steering gear. Firstly, heat source for welding was chosen arc and laser. Secondly, it investigated optimizing welding conditions in bead welding by arc and laser heat source, and welding conditions in fillet welding was optimized with welding shapes. Finally, it was measured temperature distribution of welds by infrared camera and angle distortion in fillet welding. As a result, laser welding was superior to arc welding on distortion.

  • An arc sensor for seam tracking is developed to automate sub-assembly welding in shipbuilding. We utilize a moving average method, which produces an effect of low-pass filter, to generate the position compensation. Therefore the sensor is able to modify the path of the weld seam in real time. By simplifying the compension process, the tunning time is reduced so that operators react quickly. It turns out that this sensor is highly reliable and it is installed and being used in SHI Keoje shipbuilding yard.

  • The CAD model of a elliptical gear for wire cutting has been developed. The rolling contact of pitch ellipses whose rotation axes coincide with their focus has been analyzed, and the perimeter of the pitch ellipse has been divided into equal-length segments by the number of teeth. A master tooth profile, which is a composite curve of circular arcs that represents involute, has been introduced. The elliptical gear has been designed by imposing the master tooth on the divided points of the pitch ellipse, and a full fillet has been achieved between neighbour teeth. Thus, the whole profile of an elliptical gear is a composite curve of arcs only, and consequently NC codes for wire cutting can be easily generated. Furthermore, a computer simulation program is developed to verify the mesh of the elliptical gear.
