  • The uniformity of emission mage and field emission properties of carbon nanotube(CNT) cathodes dependence on CNT particle dispersion were investigated for field emission displays. We used multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) synthesized by CVD method as the field emitter materials. CNT dispersion in CNT ink was carried out by ultrasonication and shaking methods. According to CNT dispersion conditions, the uniformity of emission image and field emission properties of CNT cathodes were greatly affected. The smaller particles of filler materials and CNT powders provide the better properties of the CNT cathodes.

  • As air pollution continues to increase owing to increasing traffic centered in urban areas, the tire industry is researching methods to reduce particulate matter. In this study, functionalized lithium butadiene rubber (F-LiBR) was applied to a natural rubber (NR)/butadiene rubber (BR) blend compound often used in truck bus radial (TBR) tire treads. The effect of the functional group that can react with carbon black (CB) in BR was investigated in terms of the dispersion of CB and the compound performance, including the generation of particulate matter. Compounds that were substituted with F-LiBR exhibited enhanced interaction with CB, resulting in excellent filler dispersion. Although F-LiBR exhibited lower crosslinking density and inferior abrasion resistance due to its high vinyl content, the compound with 30 phr of F-LiBR was advantageous in terms of its rolling resistance due to the excellent filler dispersion, which was also effective in reducing the amount of generated particulate matter (up to 56% reduction for PM2.5, and 67% reduction for PM10). The results confirmed the benefits of the introduction of functional groups into TBR tire tread compounds, which can aid in improving the fuel efficiency and reducing particulate matter generation.

  • In this study, metal copper clad laminate can be prepared using epoxy composite filled with thermally conductive fillers. In order to improve the thermal conductivity of epoxy composites, it is important factor to form conductive networks through appropriate packing of conductive fillers in epoxy composite matrix and to decrease the amount of thermally resistant junctions involving a epoxy composite matrix layer between adjacent filler units. This is because epoxy has a thermal conductivity of only 0.2-0.3W, so in order to maintain high thermal conductivity, thermally conductive fillers are connected to each other, so that the gap between particles can be reduced to reduce thermal resistance. The purpose of this study is to find way to achieve highly thermally conductive in the epoxy composite matrix filled with Al2O3 and Boron Nitride(BN) filler by filler loading and uniform dispersion. As a results, the use of Al2O3/BN hybrid filler in epoxy matrix was found to be effective in increasing thermal conductivity of epoxy composite matrix due to the enhanced connectivity offered by more continuous thermally conductive pathways and uniform dispersion without interfacial voids in epoxy composite matrix. In addition, surface treatmented s-BN improves the filler dispersion and adhesion between the filler and the epoxy matrix, which can significantly decrease the interfacial thermal resistance and increase the thermal conductivity of epoxy composite matrix.

  • In this study, Nano and micro-filler mixture composites were fabricated by fixed value of $SiO_2$ nano-filler 0.4 [wt%] according to increase of $SiO_2$ micro-filler [wt%] from 1 to 10. Composites with a good dispersion of mixed $SiO_2$ Nano and micro-particles in the epoxy resins were prepared and experiments were performed to measure the dielectric breakdown strength properties with various temperature and thickness. The dielectric strength properties are compared and analyzed with respect to nano/micro-composites filled with $SiO_2$ fillers less than properties obtained for nanocomposites.

  • The particulate type silicon carbide (SiC) and fiber type carbon fiber (CF) filler, of similar thermal conductivities, were mixed with polyetheretherketone (PEEK) to investigate the filler effects on the thermal diffusivity. The SiC and CF fillers had a good and uniform dispersion in PEEK matrix. Thermal diffusivities of PEEK composites were measured from ambient temperature up to $200^{\circ}C$ by laser flash method. The diffusivities were decreased as increasing temperature due to the phonon scattering between PEEK-filler and filler-filler interfaces. Thermal diffusivity of PEEK composites was increased with increasing filler content and the thermal conductivities of two-phase system were compared to the experimental results and it gave ideas on the filler dispersion, orientation, aspect ratio, and filler-filler interactions. Nielson equation gave a good prediction to the experimental results of PEEK/SiC. The easy network formation by CF was found to be substantially more effective than SiC and it gave a higher thermal diffusivities of PEEK/CF than PEEK/SiC.

  • To make filler loaded conducting rubber which has excellent electronical and physical properties, CR and NBR were mixed with barium ferrite(BaO.6Fe2O3). From the result of this study, vulcanization characteristics shows that curve is upgraded as the filler concentration increases and CR has higher torque than NBR. In physical properties, elongation being higher, modulus comes to decrease. Tear strength gradually decrease after showing the maximum point when is in the 100phr in CR. Resilience is not good to cause the increase in filler concentration. In electrical properties, conductivity becomes low when filler concentration increase. The increase of voltage makes a conductivity grown, but the rate change is weak. The influence of temperature hardly changes on increasing temperature. The morphology and the dispersion of a conductivity filler in vulcanizates through SEM were good. The more filler concentration increases, the shorter the particle interval is.

  • Silica-filled rubber compounds show poor filler dispersion and slow cure characteristics compared to carbon black-filled ones. In general, a silica-filled rubber compound contains silane coupling agent (bis-(3-(triethoxysilyl)-propyl)-tetrasulfide, TESPT) and diphenylguanidine (DPG) to improve the filler dispersion and to make fast cure characteristics. Acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber (NBR) improves the filler dispersion in silica-filled styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) compounds. In this study, effect of NBR on the properties of silica-filled SBR compounds was investigated. Properties of the compounds which contain NBR without DPG or with small amount of TESPT (Compound A) were compared with those of the compounds which contain TESPT and DPG without NBR (Compound B). Scorch time of Compound A is faster than those of Compound B. Modulus and tensile strength of Comound A are slightly lower than those of Compound B. Traction property of the Comound A is better than that of the Compound B. Addition of NBR leads to reduction of the used amount of TESPT and DPG.

  • Multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) based nano-composite pastes having a high filler content are prepared for the facile fabrication of a counter electrode (CE) of dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC). A polystyrene-based functional block copolymer is prepared through a controlled "living" radical polymerization technique, affording a surface modifier for the dispersion control of MWCNT in the paste. Physical dispersion through a ball-milling method additionally confirms the importance of the dispersion control, providing DSSC with enhanced processibility and improved solar-to-electricity energy conversion efficiency (${\eta}$) values. The performances of the DSSCs are further improved through the incorporation of minor amount of platinum (Pt) nanoparticles into the MWCNT pastes. The DSSC with the Pt/MWCNT hybrid CE exhibits very high ${\eta}$ values, which is superior to that of DSSC with the standard Pt CE.

  • The effect of filler type and dispersion time on thin film characterization is studied. Hollow silica powders which have the advantage of transmittance are selected. In this paper, the characterization of haze, transmittance, and gloss are analyzed in terms of filler concentration and coating thickness, respectively. As a result, the value of haze and gloss increased with increasing of filler concentration and coating thickness, respectively. In addition, the variation of transmittance by filler concentration and coating thickness is not occurred. In conclusion, it is assumed that hollow silica powders as a filler have an advantage of concentration increment and transmittance.

  • Multi-walled carbon nanotube reinforced epoxy composites were fabricated using shear mixing and sonication. The mechanical, viscoelastic, thermal, and electrical properties of the fabricated specimens were measured and evaluated. From the images and the results of the measurements of tensile strengths, the specimens having 0.6 wt% nanotube content showed better dispersion and higher strength than those of the other specimens. The Young's moduli of the specimens increased as the nanotube filler content was increased in the matrix. As the concentrations of nanotubes filler were increased in the composite specimens, their storage and loss moduli also tended to increase. The specimen having a nanotube filler content of 0.6 wt% showed higher thermal conductivity than that of the other specimens. On the other hand, in the measurement of thermal expansion, specimens having 0.4 and 0.6 wt% filler contents showed a lower value than that of the other specimens. The electrical conductivities also increased with increasing content of nanotube filler. Based on the measured and evaluated properties of the composites, it is believed that the simple and efficient fabrication process used in this study was sufficient to obtain improved properties in the specimens.
