  • New Design configurations of the fighter aircraft igloo diffuser were studied based on the closed ventilation type in contrast to the conventional open distribution type. To validate the enhanced and safe performance, the exhaust flow patterns of the two igloo diffuser types were simulated by both experimental and computational approaches as design tools. Flow visualizations were conducted to investigate the exhaust flow patterns in experimental approach. In addition, the commercial code called Fluent was used to calculate flow field properties. Computational simulations provided detailed parametric studies that significantly reduced the amount of experimentation necessary to alter the design parameters of the existing fighter igloo diffuser. The closed ventilation type of the igloo diffuser was shown the better results.

  • A three-dimensional inviscid flow solver has been developed based on unstructured meshes for the simulation of steady and unsteady flowfields around a generic fighter aircraft and for the investigation of the aerodynamic interference between the external stores and the tail surfaces. The flow solver is based on a vertex-centered finite-volume method and an implicit point Gauss-Seidel relaxation scheme. To validate the flow solver, calculations were made for a steady flow and the computed results were compared with experimental data. An unsteady time-accurate computation of the generic fighter aircraft with external stores at transonic flight conditions showed that the external stores cause undesirable vibration on the horizontal tail surface due to the mutual interference between their wake and the horizontal tail surface. It was shown that downward deflection of the trailing edge flap significantly reduces the undesirable interference effect.

  • In this study, a nonlinear aeroelastic analysis system for the fighter wing with tip-store has been developed additionally in the transonic and supersonic flow region. The unsteady CFD code based on the transonic small disturbance theory has been incorporated to consider the numerical capability for the aerodynamic nonlinear effects. The coupled time-integration method is used to observe the detailed nonlinear aeroelastic responses for elastic wings in their flight. condition. A conservative wing-box model of a fighter wing with tip-store is modeled by MSC/PATRAN and the corresponding free vibration analysis has been performed by MSC/NASTRAN. The results of flutter analyses are presented in the subsonic, transonic and supersonic flow regime.

  • This paper deals with the development of an expert system modeling by constructing a knowledge-based system of the dive recovery for anticrash on the ground or sea during the task of fighter aircraft. In an IBM PC / XT computer, a prototype dive recovery expert system is constructed using mu LISP-86 programming language, and is interconnected to the SAM SUNG RM-501 robot arm to test and simulate this model. The knowledge base of this model is composed of the dive recovery charts and the V-N envelope charts of F-4 D Phantom fighter aircraft. It is shown that the prototype expert system woks well and the feasibility of practical realization is valid.

  • In this paper, we propose a data envelopment analysis (DEA) and analytic hierarchy process (AHP) integrated model to improve the selection process in the acquisition of a weapon system which is the key component to the success of the project. In particular, we applied DEA in the first stage to choose a frontier group among the candidates in the selection process of the next-generation fighter system (the 3rd FX) in Korea. Then, by using the Delphi technique, we surveyed military experts and applied AHP to determine the best choice among the candidates. The results of the study match the actual decision made by the Korean government in the weapon system acquisition. The results of the proposed DEA-AHP integrated method in the selection of the next-generation fighter systems in Korea demonstrate the usefulness of the method. In this paper, we also discuss the future implications of the proposed model.

  • Every crew are in great peril that they should put out a fire on board in person due to a property of ship isolated. Accordingly, it is essential to verify whether the fire-fighter's outfits and fire-fighting scenarios in accordance with present regulations are safe and effective actually. As a result of comparison between shore fire-fighter's outfits and fire-fighting scenarios and those on ship and statistics calculation of the place and frequency of the fire of actual ship, present limitations of fire suppression system and fire-fighter's outfits were proved. In addition, derive the distance to the place on ship that has highest frequency of fire occurrence from examining actual ship's drawings according to their description and size. Finally from experiments in more experimental groups by changing numbers of actual fire-fighters and environment and conduction of survey of a number of crew in active service on ship, the most effective fire-fighter's outfits system and fire-fighting scenarios will be derived.

  • In this paper, the loading methods of EOTS for an exploratory developing fighter were analysed by the technical characteristics of it's operation, maintenance, engineering technology and development cost. By the analysis of operational ability evaluation, the internal type had the merits of stealth function, but the external loading type was preferable to certificate the accessibility, install/detach, compatibility and interoperability with the existing fighter aircraft. From the results of 17 items of technology and development cost evaluation, we found out that the internal type had the advantage of small sizing lightweight, but the external type was highly estimated in the field of application of domestic technology, cost reduction and technical stability for achievement of performance.

  • The number of engines for fighters has been decided by thrust required and available engines at the time since the beginning of the jet age. However, many factors such as combat effectiveness, survivability, performance, and cost were considered as engine technology has been progressed. From the vietnam war and desert storm, a twin engine fighter was shown slight superiority to a single engine one in an vulnerability, but single engine fighters were a little predominant in susceptibility This paper includes the trade-off study results on the number of engines for the supersonic light attack aircraft with single and twin engines. Twin engine configuration is 8%, 26%, and 13% higher than single engine one in MTOGW, Flyaway Cost, and LCC respectively. Little difference has been found in RM&S, Maneuver and field performance. According to the factors above, single engine fighter is profitable for low class and twin engine one for medium and higher class.
