  • The purpose of this study is to identify the problems of environmental impact assessment(EIA) and to suggest new EIA technology. The problems of EIA in Korea can be summarized as follows. First, the EIA does not reflect the impact of policy, plan and program on environment. Second, the project EIA does not consider the cumulative impacts such as additive impacts, synergistic impacts, threshold/saturation impacts, induced and indirect impacts, time-crowded impacts, and space-crowded impacts. Third, the EIA techniques in Korea are not standardized. Finally, the present EIA suggests only alternatives to reduce adverse impacts. To solve above-mentioned problems, the development of new EIA technology is essential. First, the new EIA technology should be developed toward pollution prevention technology and comprehensive and integrated environmental management technology. Second, new fields of EIA for pollution prevention contain strategic environmental assessment, cumulative impacts assessment, socio-economic impact assessment, cyber EIA and EIA technology necessary after the reunification of Korean Peninsula. Third, EIA technology for integrated environmental management contains the development of integated environment assessment system and the development of packaged EIA technology. The EIA technology for integrated environmental assessment system contains (1) development of integrated impact assessment technology combining air/water quality model, GIS and remote sensing, (2) integrated impact assessment of EIA, traffic impact assessment, population impact assessment and disaster impact assessment. (3) development of integrated technology combining risk assessment and EIA (4) development of integrated technology of life cycle assessment and EIA, (5) development of integrated technology of spatial planning and EIA, (6) EIA technology for biodiversity towards sustainable development, (7) mathematical model and GIS based location decision techniques, and (8) environmental monitoring and audit. Furthermore, there are some fields which need packaged EIA technology. In case of dam development, urban or industrial complex development, tourist development, landfill or combustion facilities construction, electric power plant development, development of port, road/rail/air port, is necessary the standardized and packaged EIA technology which considers the common characteristics of the same kind of development project.

  • The purpose of this study is to consider for the introduction of the school eco-audit system as an educational method for sustainable development. First of all, the concept and objective of the education for sustainable development(ESD) are reviewed in order to advance a theory on school eco-audit system. ESD which under the premise of global inter and intra generation justice, resolves to address a mixture of ecological, economical and social aspects, as well as safeguarding limited resources and protecting the environment from pollution and energy. In order to effectively structure uncoordinated environmental activities carried out by schools, the introduction of school eco-audit system in Korea is suggested, which as the model for long-term development, has since been integrated into the school's programme. Activities related to waste, heating, electricity and water are run by a 'Management Team'. By combining all 3 fields of action - i.e. establishing basic organizational conditions, education, and individual ecological measures - the eco-audit proves to be the key to success. In particular, administration agency and method, institutional improvement are presented.

  • This study was aimed at developing a common curriculum for the department of environmental education from 5 colleges of education. The need and background of curriculum reform can be summarized as follow; first, it has been recognized that new national curriculum of 2009 and 2011 created need for training teachers equipped with more integrated competency. Second, global environmental problems such as climate change and energy crisis asked for more responsible choice and action from all citizens. Third, the extremely low hiring rate resulted in the consideration of new working fields for teacher students majoring in environmental education. Fourth, the expansion of new environmental education paradigms including education for sustainable development called for practicing reconstruction of both contends and methods. From a series of research processes including analysis of current curriculum, DACUM, opinion survey and interest groups review, several new approaches for developing new curriculum had been identified as follow; first, content areas of environmental education should be extended beyond environmental natural science. Second, new learning approaches such as project-based learning need to be emphasized for strengthening the identity of environment as a separate subject. Third, more selective majoring system need to be applied in connection with environment government officials, researchers, and social environmental educators. It was recommended that the application of new curriculum developed by the study would be evaluated and managed by teaching conditions surrounding each of the five university members joined this developing processes. However, it needs to be noted that there is not much time because we had experienced zero hiring rate for the last 4 years and environmental policy and education programs are moving rapidly toward sustainable development.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate and analyze the relationship between meteorologicalclimatic factors and fruit property data from Aronia sampling points during May to August 2016 in the Danyang area. For this purpose, we investigated the meteorological factor, the physicalchemical property of fruit and soil, and the property change of fruit according to the setting of rain and daylight shielding from Aronia sampling points. The result indicate that first, meteorologicalclimatic factors such as the maximum air temperature, the accumulated precipitation, the relative humidity, and daylight hours are a positive influence on products and maintenance of quality of Aronia as well as a suitable field for cultivating Aronia in the Danyang. However, a strong wind in April and May deeply affects the falling phenomenon of the flowering and blooming season. Second, the quality and products of Aronia show the high correlation coefficients of more than 0.9 with agricultural meteorologicalclimatic factors such as daily maximum temperature, daily soil temp, daily soil pH, cumulated precipitation, and daily soil humidity. Also, they can be predicted by the regression equations using these factors. Third, it is necessary to maintain the rain shielding in these fields because antocyanin and saccharinity components within Aronia decreased in case of heavy rainfalls. And, the result of regression analysis saccharinity and antocyanin within aronia from normal fields and rain shieldingfields at Aronia sampling points show a high correlation, respectively.

  • Social demand for ecological engineering and technology has increased in tandem with national economic growth in order to improve the environmental capacity of civil infrastructures. To meet this demand, the Korean Society of Ecology and Infrastructure Engineering (KSEIE) was established in January 2013 and has contributed to the development of ecological engineering technologies. However, the establishment of an educational system for human resources training in ecological engineering is still at an early stage, and it is imperative to develop a curriculum for producing the human resources that can understand and apply ecological principles and functions and that is equipped with the abilities required for ecological conservation, restoration, and creation. As part effort, the KSEIE held a forum, entitled Founding the Education for Ecological Engineering, to discuss the establishment of the education system for ecological engineering in Korea. In this paper, based on the discussions and suggestions made during the forum, we analyzed the current status of ecological engineering education in various disciplines - civil and construction engineering, biology and environment, and landscape planning - in domestic universities, and attempted to seek possible solutions based on the cases of foreign universities. Generally, ecology and other application curricula are taught as fragmented subjects and fields in domestic universities. The development of new education strategies and systematic curricula for multidisciplinary education, ecological response to climate change, and the expansion of research fields is required.

  • The objective of this research is to understand the current field and composition of environment related terminology used in middle and high school textbooks, to find out uniformity and relationship between them, and development for the future establishement and replacement in the environmental education, simultaneously. The results of this study are as follows: 1. The terms used in middle school textbooks were found out to be 334, while those used in high school were 717. Total terms used were 870(759 kinds) and those recorded in the environmental terminology dictionary were 362 including synonyms. 2. Of those 870, 211 terms (24.25%) which were the same words have been used in interlinked connection with the Middle and High schools. While 136 terms(15.63%) have been used in the only middle, and 524 terms(60.23%) have been used in the only high schools. In middle and high school environmental text books 211 (24.25%) terms were the same interlinked terms. Of those extracted terms, 136(15.63%) were used in the middle school 'environmental' textbooks and in high school, 524(60.23%) were used in 'environmental science' book. These results shows that there is big gap between middle and high school contents and we will need more consideration in selecting the terms and better substance. 3. The same terminologies used in both middle and high schools were total number of 676. In those terms 257 kinds(76.26%) were used in middle school 'environmental' text books, and 563 kinds(78.52%) in high school 'environmental science' text books. Here are some details : 1) Terms used as same meaning but different in expression in middle school: 83 kinds, 192 terms (11.99%). 2) Differently expressed in the same text book : in middle school - 20 kinds(2.64%) in high school - 61 kinds(8.04%) 3) Differently expressed terms between middle and high school: 51 kinds(6.72%) 4) Same meaning in 3 expressions or more : 19 kinds 4. Of the examined terms 362(including 43 synonyms) were defined in environmental dictionary which is 41.8% of the total words. In the future specialization in utmost fields will be needed 5. When dividing those examined terms according to the middle and high school curriculum, the most terms were used in nature and pollution fields following environmental preserving, artificial environment, and environmenatal counterplan. In middle schools the most used terms were in the field of environment pollution, preservation, counterplan, and sanitation. These results reflects the education goals and objectives of middle schools. But for the middle school 'environment' curriculum moret uniform distribution are needed and for the high schools' 'environmental science' program, the fields in artificial environment, industrization, urbanization, and sanitation should be intensified.

  • This survey is made to offer the fundamental data for the establishment of practical environmental education plan based on understanding of the change of the environmental awareness of elementary school students under the longitudinal-sectional research design. In this research, the questionnaire made by Kim Jong-ki in 1988 and by Kim Hak-Bong in 1993, is amended and filled up, which is used to the 624 numbers of fifth and sixth grade students lived in Seoul, Pyungtaek and Yangjugu. This research ares are devided into 5 ares which are the environmental general, environmental pollution, living environment, environmental education and consciouness of environmental crisis to humen beings. First, it is grasped general tendency and then is compared and analyzed the level of awareness by residence, sex, grade. stsdard of living parental academic, the background variation of parental job with the status in 1988 and 1933. The results are as follows: 1) The rate of interest for environmental pollution and population is reduced but the rate of interest for animal protection is increased. 2) In spite of reinforcement of environmental education In school, the numbers of the students who became to know some information about that from the class are diminished. 3) Even if the children are aware of sewage seriousely, the numbers of the students who answer it is caused by domestic sewage are a few. 4) On the environmental education area, the various materials of the are not utilized well in a class. 5) On the environmental crisis to the human beings the rate is much increased in 1993 ttan that of 1988 environmental contamination is the important cause of the human beings' crises but now the rate is reduced again. In other variables except the environmental contamination, it is increased the that of 1993 on the war, on population it is showed a tendency of reduction. The results of this study are as follows : 1) It is supposed that the education should be done only not for the knowledge of environmental education but for the practice of that - animal breeding, field experience of the ecological destruction places. 2) The various environmental education materials such as TV, VTR are demanded to give the students proper information about that and to educate sufficently. 3) The course of fields exploration for environmental education should be prepared under cooperation of the authorities concerned. 4) It has to be groped for an epoch-making teaching method and the training and the practice of teachers in order to reform environmental pollution.

  • Currently, biodiversity conservation is regarded as one of the most important environmental issues in the 21st century. However, The educational approaches on biodiversity conservation is not actively developed. This study was conducted to develop the educational program on biodiversity conservation related with endangered species conservation for improving elementary and middle school girl students' knowledge on biodiversity, inspiring the value and importance of biodiversity, and improving the attitude toward the conservation of biodiversity. Because the biodiversity loss of wetlands such as rice-fields, rivers, marshes has made the breeding population of Oriental White Stork(Ciconia boyciana) endangered in Korea, this subject was very effective for students to learn the cause and effect of biodiversity loss realistically. The education program was conducted to 68 local elementary and middle girl students from 2007 to 2009 and consists of three main activities such as feeding on storks in captivity, sampling living organisms in rice-fields, and designing the future stork living village. The results didn't show a positive effect on improving the knowledge on the biodiversity, but a positive effect on improving the attitude toward the conservation of biodiversity. And the number of taxa that students noticed in rice-fields has increased significantly. In conclusion, this educational program promoted students to concern about and take up a positive attitude on the biodiversity conservation issue.
