Screen printable CNT pastes were formulated including conductive nano particles (CNPs) and their properties were investigated with an expectation of stable cold cathodes for advanced lamp application. CNT cathodes showed a turn-on field of 1~1.5V/um, a life time of ~100 hours at an emission current density of 10uA/$cm^2$ for DC-bias. Detailed analysis of measured I-V was carried out by applying Fowler-Nordheim model to trace down the origin of emission property degradation.

The CN(carbon nitrogen) nanofibers were formed by HIP(high isostatic pressure) process. From the field emission measurement, CN nanofibers shows an excellent characteristics of emitter, better than CNTs and carbon nanofibers. The structures obtained can be divided into three groups : bamboo-like fibers, corrugated structures and bead necklace-like fib res. Emission properties of CN nanofibers were investigated for spacing, between anode and cathode, variation. Turn-on fields was 1.4 v/$\mu\textrm{m}$. The time reliability and light emission test were carried out for about 100 hours. We suggest that CN nanofibers can be possibly applied to the high brightness flat lamp because of low turn-on field and time reliability
Adsorption of residual gas molecules damped the emission current of a W (310) field electron emission (FE) emitter. The damping speed was linearly proportional to the pressure gauge readings at pressure ranging from ${\sim}10^{-8}Pa$ to ${\sim}10^{-9}Pa$, and the proportionality constant was employed to measure pressure in the $10^{-10}Pa$ range. A time plot of FE current revealed the existence of an "initial stable region" after the flash heating of W(310) FE, during which the FE current damps very slowly. The presence of non-hydrogen gas removed this region from the plot, supplying a means of qualitatively analysing the gas species.

A circuit model for a field emission triode has been proposed. The model parameters have been extracted from he fabricated silicon tip array and verified by comparing with the results simulated by circuit simulator(SPICE). The cut-off frequency can be calculated from the parametric capacitance and the transconductance values extracted from measurements. For the field emission triode, the capacitance of 3.45fF/tip and the transconductance of 0.94nS/tip have been measured under the emission current of 4.1nA/tip. From these values, the cut-off frequency is predicted to be 43 kHz but th measured one came out to be 6 kHz. because o the parasitic capacitance components.

We report the field emission characteristics of transparent single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) film printed using an inkjet. Pure SWNTs dispersed in dimethylformamide were printed in a transparent layer on indium-tin oxide-coated glass and annealed at $350^{\circ}C$. After taping treatment, SWNTs were oriented vertically on the substrate. The front and the back of the fabricated device produced simultaneous emissions of identical quality. In addition, inkjet printing directly achieved a patterned emission, without a secondary pattern process. This method allows simple fabrication using only SWNTs, without the use of other additives.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been significantly used for the field emitters for display applications. However, the lifetime of CNT emitters which are formed by screen printing technique is not guaranteed yet, because the constituents in CNT paste affect the lifetime of CNTs. The CNT pastes for screen printing are normally composed of organic vehicles (nitro cellulose, ethyl cellulose, etc) and additives (glass frits, indium tin oxide (ITO), etc) with CNTs. In this study, the effects of constituents in CNT pastes on the lifetime and emission characteristics of CNTs were investigated by thermal and electrical analysis. Use of glass frits worsened the lifetime and electron emission of CNTs. However, an addition of ITO to CNT paste rather improved the lifetime of CNTs. Degradation of CNTs was small when nitro cellulose was used in CNT paste as an organic vehicle.
We deposited diamond-like carbon (DLC) films using ion beam sputtering of a graphite target on flat substrates for use as a thin film field emitter. An n-type silicon wafer, titanium-coated silicon, and indium tin oxide (ITO) coated glass were used as a substrate. All films exhibited a sudden increase in the emission after a breakdown occurred at high voltage. The morphology of the films after the breakdown depended on the substrate. On ITO and Ti substrates, the DLC film peeled off upon breakdown, but on the Si substrate the surface melting due to breakdown resulted in the formation of various structures such as a sharp point, mound, and crater. By scanning the deformed surface with a tip anode, we found that the emission was concentrated at the deformed sites, indicating that the field enhancement due to the morphology change was responsible for the increased emission.
Carbon nanotube emitters, prepared by screen printing, have demonstrated a great potential towards low-cost, largearea field emission displays. Carbon nanotube paste, essential to the screen printing technology, was formulated to exhibit low threshold electric fields as well as an emission uniformity over a large area. Two different types of triode structures, normal gate and undergate, have been investigated, leading us to the optimal structure designing. These carbon nanotube FEDs demonstrated color separation and high brightness over 300 $cd/m^2$ at a video-speed operation of moving images. Our recent developments are discussed in details.
Field emitter arrays (FEAs) were developed using carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as electron emission sources. The CNTs were grown using a selective-positioning technique with a resist-protection layer. The light emission properties were studied through the electron emission of the CNTs on patterned islands, which were modulated with island diameter and spacing. The electron emission of CNT arrays with $5{\mu}m$ diameters and $10{\mu}m$ heights increased with increased spacing (from $10{\mu}m$ to $40{\mu}m$). The electron emission current of the $40-{\mu}m$-island-spacing sample showed a current density of 1.33 mA/$cm^2$ at E = 11 V/${\mu}m$, and a turn-on field of 7 V/${\mu}m$ at $1{\mu}A$ emission current. Uniform electron emission current and light emission were achieved with $40{\mu}m$ island spacing and $5{\mu}m$ island diameter.

Nano-sized conical-type tungsten(W) field-emitters based on carbon nanotubes(CNTs) are fabricated with the configuration of CNTs/catalyst/buffer/W-tip by adopting various buffer layers, such as TiN, Al, Al/TiN, and Al/hi/TiN. This study focuses on elucidating how the buffer layers affect the structural properties of CNTs and the electron-emission characteristics of CNT-emitters. Field-emission scanning electron microscopy(FESEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy(HRTEM) are used to monitor the nanostructures and surface morphologies of all the catalysts and CNTs grown. The crystalline structure of CNTs is also characterized by Raman spectroscopy. Furthermore, the measurement of field-emission characteristics for all the field-emitters fabricated shows that the emitter using the Al/Ni/TiN stacked buffer reveals the most excellent performances, such as maximum emission current of $202{\mu}A$, threshold field of 2.08V/${\mu}m$, and long-term (up to 24h) stability of emission current.
