  • This paper presents development of flow control valve using MR fluid. Generally, since the apparent viscosity of MR fluids is adjusted by applying magnetic fields, the MR valves can control high level fluid power without any mechanical moving parts. In this paper, flow control valve using MR fluid on the behavior of the magnetic field influence on the numerical analysis of more accurate electromagnetic parameters were obtained, even if when magnetic field apply inside of surrounding MR fluid from electromagnet, more realistic designing way analysis of characteristic of whole magnetic field distribution is suggested by surrounding magnetic material. Also, comparison of flow rate inlet and outlet, behavior of MR fluid in experiments proposed. A new type of flow control valve using MR fluid is proposed by analysis of behavior of MR fluid in experiments.

  • An electrostatic ink jet head can be used for manufacturing processes of large display systems and printed circuit boards (PCB) as well as inkjet printers because an electrostatic field provides an external force which can be manipulated to control sizes of droplets. The existing printing methods such as thermal bubble and piezo inkjet heads have shown difficulties to control the ejection of the droplets for printing applications. Thus, the new inkjet head using the electrostatic force has been proposed in this study. In order to prove the theory of the developed electrostatic ink jet head, the applicable and basic theory has been studied using distilled water and water with sodium dodecyl surfate (SDS). Also, a numerical analysis has been performed to calculate the intensity of the electrostatic field using the Maxwell's equation. Furthermore, experiments have been carried out using a downward glass capillary with outside diameter of $500{\mu}m$. The gravity, surface tension, and electrostatic force have been analyzed with high voltages of 0 to 5kV. It has been observed that the droplet size decreases and the frequency of the droplet formation and the velocity of the droplet ejection increase with increasing the intensity of the electrostatic field. The results of the experiments have shown good agreement with those of numerical analysis.

  • We demonstrate the capability of differential-phase optical coherence tomography (DP-OCT) to detect superparamagnetic iron oxide (SPIO) nanoparticles taken up by liver parenchymeal macrophages (Kupffer cells). We apply an external time-varying high-intensity focused magnetic field. Our experiments demonstrate a novel diagnostic modality to detect macrophages that have taken up SPIO nanoparticles. Magnetic force acting on the nanoparticles was varied by applying a sinusoidal current to a solenoid containing a conical iron core that substantially increased and focused the magnetic field strength ($B_{max}$ = 2 Tesla). $ApoE^{-/-}$ mice were sacrificed 2 days post intravenous injections of different SPIO doses (1.0, and 0.1 mmol Fe/kg body weight). Livers of $ApoE^{-/-}$ mice with and without injection of SPIO nanoparticles were investigated using DP-OCT, which detects tissue movement with nanometer resolution. Frequency response of iron-laden liver movement was twice the stimulus frequency. Movement was not observed in livers of control mice. Results of our experiments indicate DP-OCT is a candidate methodology to detect tissue based macrophages containing SPIO nanoparticles excited by an external focused magnetic field.

  • This study was conducted to analyze fishing capacity and bycatch by mesh size and entrance size of spring net pot conducted by water tank and field experiment. The water tank experiments were conducted by using traps with mesh size of 22 mm and entrance size of 120 mm and 140 mm, respectively in the water tank of NIFS. The field experiment was conducted using 5 kinds of spring net pot with mesh sizes of 20 mm, 22 mm, 35 mm and entrance size of 120 mm, 130 mm, 140 mm, 360 mm by coastal trap fishery vessel operating around the area of Geoje island. In the result of water tank experiments, the catch of conger eel was 1.5 times higher when using trap with entrance size of 140 mm than that of 120 mm. In the field experiment, when using same mesh size, the larger the entrance size, the higher amount of conger eel catch, bycatch and number of bycatch species. When using the same entrance size, the larger the mesh size, the lower amount of conger eel catch and number of bycatch species, whereas the amount of bycatch showed increasing trend.

  • Tidal currents and tidal residual currents in Chinhae Bay are investigated by the field observations and hydraulic experiments during the spring tide and neap tide. The horizontal and vertical scales of the model are l/2,000 and 1/159, respectively. The hydraulic model results roughly coincide with the field data. Maximum tidal currents during the spring tide and neap tide in the central channel of Chinhae Bay are strong as about 90 and 30cm/s respectively, and strong tidal residual currents take place. Maximum tidal currents during the spring tide and neap tide in the western and northern part of the bay are weak as below 30 and 10cm/s respectively, and also tidal residual currents are weak. Tidal residual currents rotating clockwise occur in the central part of the bay. Northward tidal residual currents in the northern part of Kajo-do are predominant, whereas southward ones in the southern part of Kajo-do are remarkable. The surface currents in the bay depend strongly on the wind and river flow, and it seems to be remarkable during the neap tide.

  • Odor is one of the major nuisances in the environment. In most countries, odor annoyance from livestock production is an increasing problem in community. In order to reduce the odor inconvenience and establish a good relation between livestock industries and the surrounding communities, many studies, such as diffusion simulations and field experiments, on the odor dispersion and its reduction have been investigated. These studies need to accompany the aerodynamic approach, as a main mechanism of diffusion phenomenon, and computational fluid dynamics(CFD) can be effectively used to study this kind of research. CFD considers both various wind conditions as well as topographical conditions to study aerodynamic phenomenon. Therefore the ultimate objective of the study was to develop an aerodynamic model to predict qualitatively and quantitatively odor diffusion from livestock. In this study, as the first step of this study, various phenomena and factors of odor diffusion from livestock houses were investigated through field experiments in 2007. Later, those data will be also used to verify the CFD accuracy as well as to develop 3-dimensional CFD model.

  • Greenhouse and field experiments with American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius L.) stratified seed sown at depths of 10 to 100 mm were carried out to determine effects of seeding depth on seedling emergence, growth and development and to calculate optimum seeding depth. The time to 50% seedling emergence ($E_{50}$) in the field increased linearly from 17 d at 20 mm seeding depth to 42.5 d at 80 mm. Seedling emergence and root weight (economic yield) at the end of the first year each increased quadratically with the increase of seeding depth. Maximum emergence and root yields were produced at sowing depths of 26.9 and 30.6 mm respectively. In a greenhouse pot experiment, increasing seeding depth from 10 to 100 mm increased partitioning of dry matter to leaves from 23.6% to 26.1%, to stems from 6.9% to 14.2%, and decreased dry matter to roots from 69.5% to 59.7%. Optimum seeding depth was 31.1 mm for a corresponding maximum root weight of 119.9 mg. A predictor equation [X (seeding depth, mm)=Y (seed weight, mg)/9.1+20.96] for seeding depth for ginseng, based on data for ten vegetable crops, their seed weights and suggested seeding depths, predicted a seeding depth of 28.3 mm for ginseng similar to that reported above for most pot and field experiments.

  • Experiments were carried out on agglomeration of bipolarly charged particles in an alternating current electric field. Laboratory-scale setup was built and experiments were conducted at atmospheric condition. DOS(Di-octyl Sebacate) particles with 100% purity were generated by an atomizer. The particles were branched into two, each of which passed through a wire-to-plate type charging section where a positive or a negative DC high voltage was applied and was charged positively or negatively. These bipolarly charged particles together passed through an agglomeration section where an $\pm$20kV AC power was applied between two plates. The resident time in the agglomeration section was adjusted as l sec. Particle sampling was made by a cascade impactor (MOUDI). The effect of agglomeration system on the reduction ratio of particles below l ㎛ was 42∼45%. Effect of AC frequency on the particle size distribution was found insignificant.

  • Three years of frost heave field experiments were conducted to evaluate a method for reducing heave using a recycled tire powder-soil mixture. By mixing Tomakomai soil with 20% recycled tire powder, frost heave amount was drastically decreased. The results of the field experiment confirm that recycled tire powder is an excellent material for use in controlling the total amount of heave. The restraining effect of a recycled tire powder-soil mixture is qualitatively analyzed based on amount of frost heave, frost heave ratio, thermal conductivity, permeability and segregation potential theory.

  • Power semiconductor devices have been the major backbone for high-power electronic devices. One of important parameters in view of power semiconductor devices often characterize with a high breakdown voltage. Therefore, many efforts have been made, since the development of the Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT), toward having higher level of breakdown voltage, whereby the typical design thereof is focused on the structure using the field ring. In this study, in an attempt to make up more optimized field-ring structure, the characteristics of the field ring were investigated with the use of theoretical arithmetic model and methodologically the design of experiments (DOE). In addition, the IGBT having the field-ring structure was designed via simulation based on the finding from the above, the result of which was also analyzed. Lastly, the current study described the trench field-ring structure taking advantages of trench-etching process having the improved field-ring structure, not as simple as the conventional one. As a result of the simulation, it was found that the improved trench field-ring structure leads to more desirable voltage divider than relying on the conventional field-ring structure.
