  • The field emission characteristics are studied by simulation for carbon nanotube triode structures with a strip-shaped emitter and a gate hole aligned with it. Two structures, one with double-edge and the other with single edge are analyzed. They show good emission characteristics. Emissions of electrons are concentrated on the edges of emitter and the emitted current increases as the distance between emitter and gate decreases. For single-edged emitter, the emitted electrons form a narow strip-shaped beam which has a good directionality. These triode structures have advantages in that they can be easily fabricated and aligned for assembly.

  • The luminescence properties of $Sr_{1-x}Ba_xTiO_3:Pr$, Al red phosphor for Field Emission Displays (FEDs) have been investigated in powders prepared though solid-state reactions. $Sr_{1-x}Ba_xTiO_3:Pr$, Al red phosphors indicate a higher luminescent intensity, and have been found to have potential for field emission displays. The addition of Ba increased the luminescence intensity at 617 nm by up to 30%. Ba ions are effective in producing the energy transfers from host-to-activator in 4f-5d transitions.

  • The carbon nanotube emitters for field emission displays were fabricated by using screen printing techniques. The pastes for screen printing are composed of organic binders, carbon nanotubes (multiwalled or singlewalled), and some additive materials. The pastes were printed on Cr-coated/Ag-printed soda-lime glass substrates. From the I-V characteristics, the turn-on field of SWNT was lower than that of MWNT. The decrease in the mesh size of screen masks (i.e. increase in the opening size of the screen mesh) resulted in decreasing the turn-on field and increasing the electron emission current. When the carbon nanotubes were mixed with silver pastes, silver powders appeared to contribute to the vertically aligning of carbon nanotubes on a glass.

  • Amorphous silicon thin-film transistors (a-Si TFTs) were incorporated into Mo-tip-based triode-type field emitters and diode-type ones of carbon nanotubes for an active-matrix cathode (AMC) plate of field emission displays. Also, we developed a novel surface-treatment process for the Mo-tip fabrication, which gleatly enhanced in the stability of field emission. The field emission currents of AMC plates on glass substrate were well controlled by the gate bias of a-Si TFTs. Active-matrix field emission displays (AMFEDs) with these AMC plates were demonstrated in a vacuum chamber, showing low-voltage matrix addressing, good stability and reliability of field emission, and highly uniform light emissions from the anode plate with phosphors. The optimum design of AMFEDs including a-Si TFTs and a new light shield/focusing grid is discussed.

  • The Field Emission Display is potentially an excellent display with high brightness and low power consumption with wide viewing angle but more work is still needed in order to identify the ideal electron emitter for such displays. This paper will review the work that we have carried out in Cambridge aver the past couple of years on optimisation of Carbon nanotubes for use as the cold cathode emitters that are possible candidates as the electron sources in second generation FEDs.

  • Advances in non-sulfur-containing phosphors from low-temperature synthesis of thin-films suitable for glass substrates are discussed. The effects of preparation process on the properties of a variety of rare-earth-doped oxide hosts are reviewed. Cathodoluminescent characteristics have been studied to determine the usefulness of oxide thin-film phosphors in field emission displays.

  • We demonstrate color video displays driven by carbon nanotube electron field emitters. These nanotubes are incorporated into the device by selective growth using low temperature chemical vapor deposition. The device structure is simple and inexpensive to fabricate, and a 45 V switching voltage enables the use of low cost driver electronics. The prototype units are sealed 4.6” diagonal displays with 726 um pixels. They represent a piece of a 42” diagonal 1280x720 high definition television. The carbon nanotube growth process is performed as the last processing step and creates nanotubes ready for field emission. No activation post-processing steps are required, so chemical and particulate contamination is not introduced. Control of the nanotube dimension, orientation, and spatial distribution during growth enables uniform, highquality, color video performance.

  • Of the emissive display technologies, field emission displays using pasted carbon nanotubes offer several advantages over other competing cathode materials such as low driving voltage, possible large-area and low-cost processes. In this study, formulation of carbon nanotube paste and its electron field emission properties are characterized. Also the effects of additive powders and surface morphology on electron emission are reported.
