  • Low silage corn yield due to bad soil physical properties in the paddy field converted to upland condition is the chief obstacles to expanding the area for silage maize production. The effect of subsoiling (subsoiling to depth 40 cm) on soil physical properties and silage corn yield were investigated in the first year of paddy field converted to upland condition in 2010 and 2011, respectively. Soil compaction was loosened much particularly at depth 25~35cm as much as 1~1.5 MPa and soil bulk density and porosity at depth 15~30 cm are improved by subsoiling. Maize growth was increased by subsoiling, particularly in kernel number per ear which increased ear weight. Total digestible nutrients (TDN) yield of silage maize was increased as much as 19 and 39% in 2010 and 2011, respectively showing that yield increase according to subsoiling was higher when maize growth was prohibited much by excess-moisture injury due to heavy rain in 2011.

  • To manage the effluent nutrients amounts from rice paddy fields using free range ducks or rice bran, we evaluated the effects of a purifying paddy field which is no fertilizer, no pesticides, and dense rice seedling having a concept of constructed wetland. The experimental paddy field was located at downstream in the watershed of ducks using rice culture area in Milyang. The purifying paddy of land design were treated with seeding method, and vegetation type. As land design, direct seeding on plane, and direct seeding on high-ridge field in 2007. Planting rice only, and planting rice with water hyacinth were treated as vegetation type in purifying paddy in 2008. The purifying paddy fields were effective to reduce amount of T-N and T-P contents in effluent to 33.2~45.3%, and 53.1~55.4%, respectively. The direct seeding on high-ridge treatment, having long residence time of effluent water was more effective than plane plot as T-N 0.29 $g^{-1}m^{-2}d^{-1}$, and T-P 0.031 $g^{-1}m^{-2}d^{-1}$. The planting rice with water hyacinth treatment was effective than planting rice only as T-N 0.23 $g^{-1}m^{-2}d^{-1}$, and T-P 0.049 $g^{-1}m^{-2}d^{-1}$. The optimum area of purifying paddy field to treats all effluent were found out 3.2~4.7% of rice culture area using free range ducks, and rice bran at upper stream.

  • Variations in growth and yield of adlay(Coix lachyma-jobi var. ma-yuen Stapf) was monitored in farmer's fields in Yunchon, the main producing area in Korea, where the field condition showed difference in topograyphy, crop rotation, and ridge shape. Rotation cropping increased remankably stem length, and number of effective tillers, reduced the occurrence of leaf blight and crop damage by the disease, and in addition showed positive effect to repress the occurrence of stem-borerin upland field. Stem length was greater in upland field than in paddy field and this result seemed to be related to lodging degree. The even field with crop rotation system showed the highest seed yield and followed by hillside field and paddy field resulted the lowest yield.

  • We surveyed the distribution pattern of weeds in onion, garlic, potato, and barley fields including 304 sites of Gyeongsangbuk-do. The weeds were summarized as 30 family and 125 species in onion crop field, 29 family and 101 species in garlic field, 30 family 88 species in potato field, finally 27 family and 108 species. Compositae was dominant family (26.4%, 33 species), followed by Polygonaceae (8.8%, 11 species), Cruciferae (8.8%, 11 species) in onion field. Compositae was also dominant family (24.8%, 25 species) in garlic field, it was 22.7% (20 species) in potato field, and it was also 24.1% (26 species) in barley field, respectively. Among these winter crops, major five families were occupied 61.1, 58.4, 58.0 and 57.5% in turn at barley, onion, potato and garlic fields. The PCA-covariance plot analysis for investigation of occurrence pattern of weeds by four winter crop fields revealed that the occurrence pattern of weed species in barley field was distinguished by Alopecurus aequalis var. amurensis, Stellaria alsine var. undulate and Stellaria aquatica.

  • An agrivoltaic system (AVS) is a combined system that generates power through photovoltaic panels (PVPs) installed above a field where a crop is cultivated. Although soil moisture is an important limiting factor for open-field crop production, particularly during spring season in Korea, it is not well considered in the utilization of AVS. Indeed, the application of water-energy-food nexus on the AVS should be necessary. In this study, the changes of soil moisture and temperature under the AVS was investigated in fallow paddy field during spring season. The AVS that has partial shading condition by PV panels was decreased soil temperature and increased soil moisture compared to open-field. Furthermore, the maximum of the change in soil moisture to the change in soil temperature had a negative correlation both on open-field and AVS under wet condition. It represents that the micro-climate under the AVS is in energy-limited condition. The open-field of relatively high soil temperature was in water-limited condition. The different behavior of soil moisture on the AVS should be considered for the sustainable agricultural system as related to water-energy-food nexus.
