  • The inherent reliability of a product is primarily determined in the design stage, and therefore, design engineers should be able to design reliability into the product in an efficient manner. Especially, the product should be designed such that its reliability is robust to various noise factors encountered in production and field environments. The Taguchi method can be effectively used for this purpose. However, there exist only a few attempts to integrate the Taguchi method with reliability design, and in addition, the existing works do not sufficiently consider the robustness and/or the distinction between noise and acceleration factors. This paper develops a unified approach to robust reliability design assuming that accelerated life tests are conducted at each combination of design and noise conditions. First, an experimental structure for assigning not only acceleration but also noise factors is presented. Second, the reliability at the use condition is estimated using the assumed accelerated life test model. Third, reliabilities are transformed into 'efforts' using an effort function which reflects the degree of difficulty involved in improving the reliability. Finally, an optimal setting of design parameters is determined based on the mean and standard deviation of the effort values. The above approach is illustrated with an example of a paper feeder design.

  • Astrophysical shocks accelerate particles to high velocities, which we observe as cosmic rays. The acceleration process changes the nature of the shock because the particles interact with the local magnetic field, removing energy and potentially triggering instabilities. In order to simulate this process, we need a computational method that can handle large scale structures while, at the same time, following the motion of individual particles. We achieve this by combining the grid magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) method with the particle-in-cell (PIC) approach. MHD can be used to simulate the thermal gas that forms the majority of the gas near the shock, while the PIC method allows us to model the interactions between the magnetic field and those particles that deviate from thermal equilibrium. Using this code, we simulate shocks at various sonic and Alfvenic Mach numbers in order to determine how the behaviour of the shock and the particles depends on local conditions.

  • Extraordinary displacement and vibration by heavy vehicle causes passengers to feel mental uncomfortableness and bridge to be damaged. To increase serviceability, the research on the human influence for vibration to happen at the bridge has been performed for a long time in oversea but it does not draw concern relatively in the domestic. The purpose of this research is to develop an evaluation method for vibration serviceability of continuous slab bridge. This research is focused on establishing theoretical method to assess vibration serviceability of bridge considering natural frequency, displacement, and acceleration since the criteria for the human responses to vibration is generally based on frequency band. By examining the characteristics of vibration serviceability which has been assessed with human response curve through field experiments as well as analytical study, the evaluation method of vibration serviceability for continuous slab bridges is proposed. Based on applications to the example of continuous slab bridge, the simple evaluation of vibration serviceability in the paper may be used in the initial step of design practice.

  • This paper compared with field weakening operation methods for the spindle motor of machine tool in which high speed drive is required. The maximum torque field weakening algorithm ensures the full utilization of the output torque capability of the machine over 1/Wr method. From simulation, the validity of the Max_Te method is confirmed. It is verified that the Max-Te algorithm provided the improved torque capability over 1/Wr method. So, It is applicable to provide high performance control involving fast acceleration and precise speed control for the adjustable speed drive system of spindle.

  • In this paper, the stochastic 1D site response analysis method using Monte Carlo simulation and considering thespatial variation of shear wave velocity profile isproposed. To consider thespatial variation of shear wave velocity profile for 1D site response analysis, the proposed method generates random shear wave velocity profiles representing the target site, and Monte Carlo simulation is used to calculate theprobability distribution of the site response analysis results such as thepeak ground acceleration. Through the field application, The applicability of the proposed method is verified through field application.

  • In recent years the monitoring of structural behavior through acquisition of vibrational data has become common practice. In addition, recent advances in sensor development have made the collection of diverse dynamic information feasible. Other than the commonly collected acceleration information, Global Position System (GPS) receivers and non-contact, optical techniques have also allowed for the synchronous collection of highly accurate displacement data. The fusion of this heterogeneous information is crucial for the successful monitoring and control of structural systems especially when aiming at real-time estimation. This task is not a straightforward one as measurements are inevitably corrupted with some percentage of noise, often leading to imprecise estimation. Quite commonly, the presence of noise in acceleration signals results in drifting estimates of displacement states, as a result of numerical integration. In this study, a new approach based on a time domain identification method, namely the Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF), is proposed for correcting the "drift effect" in displacement or rotation estimates in an online manner, i.e., on the fly as data is attained. The method relies on the introduction of artificial white noise (WN) observations into the filter equations, which is shown to achieve an online correction of the drift issue, thus yielding highly accurate motion data. The proposed approach is demonstrated for two cases; firstly, the illustrative example of a single degree of freedom linear oscillator is examined, where availability of acceleration measurements is exclusively assumed. Secondly, a field inspired implementation is presented for the torsional identification of a tall tower structure, where acceleration measurements are obtained at a high sampling rate and non-collocated GPS displacement measurements are assumed available at a lower sampling rate. A multi-rate Kalman Filter is incorporated into the analysis in order to successfully fuse data sampled at different rates.

  • Under the effects of the near-field earthquakes, the incident angle of the incoming wave could be different. In this study, the influences of some parameters such as incident angle, basin edge, peak ground acceleration level of the bedrock motion as well as different clay types with different consistency on the amplification behavior of the shallow basins are investigated. To attain this goal, the numerical analyses of the basins filled with three different clay types are performed using a fully nonlinear method. The two dimensional models of the basins are subjected to a set of strong ground motions with different peak ground acceleration levels and three different incident angles of 30◦, 45◦ and 90◦ with respect to the horizontal axes. The results show the dominant effect of the obliquely subjected waves at most cases. The higher effect of the 45◦ incident angle on the basin response was concluded. In the other part of this study, the spectral amplification curves of the surface points were compared. It was seen that the maximum spectral amplification of different surface points occurs at different periods. Also, it is affected by the increase in the peak acceleration level of the incoming motions.

  • There is a need to use sheath flow nozzle to detect bioaerosol such as virus and bacteria due to their characteristics. In order to enhance the detection performance depending on nozzle parameters, numerical analysis was carried out using a commercial code, ANSYS CFX. Eulerian-lagrangian approach method is used in this simulation. Multiphase flow characteristics between primary fluid and solid were considered. The detection performance was evaluated based on the results of flow field in nozzle chamber such as focusing efficiency and swirl strength. In addition, Latin hypercube sampling(LHS) of design of experiment(DOE) was used for generating a near-random sampling. Then, the acceleration section is optimized using response surface method(RSM). Results show that the optimized model achieved a 6.13 % in a focusing efficiency and 11.47 % increase in swirl strength over the reference model.

  • In this study, the reinforcement effect of the compression-only bridge seismic reinforcement method, which is mainly applied to old bridges, was studied through SSI analysis. As the analysis conditions, acceleration magnitudes of 0.1g, 0.15g, and 0.2 g were applied, and long-period and short-period seismic waves were applied. As a result of the analysis according to the assumed ground characteristics and structure size, the horizontal displacement at the reinforced section was reduced by about 9%, and the long-period seismic wave had a 95% larger displacement than the short-period seismic wave. In addition, an increase in acceleration of 0.1g resulted in a displacement of about 50%, and a large increase in displacement was observed in long-period seismic waves. As a result of the analysis, in the case of the compression-only bridge seismic reinforcement method, there was a reinforcing effect, so the field applicability was excellent.
