Heterogeneous ion exchange membranes were prepared by mixing polyethylene as matrix with bead and fibrous anionic ion exchangers at different mixing ratio. Generally, ion exchange capacities were increased with increasing the ratio of the fibrous ion exchanger content. The highest ion exchange capacity of the membrane was 1.86 meq/g at 30wt% IXF (ion exchange fiber) in the membrane. The water uptake, fixed ion concentration, and ion transport number of the membrane increased with increasing the content of the fibrous ion exchanger. However, the electrical resistivity of the membrane was decreased with increasing the content of the fibrous ion exchanger. The lowest electrical resistivity of 5$\Omega$/$\textrm{cm}^2$ was observed at 30 wt%of IXF.

A method for calculating the main characteristics of a potentiometric titration curve in a carboxylic ion exchanger has been investigated. The potentiometric titration curves of simple electrolyte and ion exchangers (polyelectrolytes) showed a great difference between them. The acidity parameters of the ion exchangers, the thermodynamic constant (pK0), apparent equilibrium constant (K), and correction for the apparent equilibrium constant (b), were introduced and used to express the characteristics of the carboxylic ion exchanger. A characteristic equation related to the acidity parameters of the ion exchangers systems was derived. A fibrous carboxylic cation exchanger was used and potentiometric titration curves at different concentrations of the supporting electrolyte were obtained . To prove the validity of the characteristic equation, the concentration of the supporting electroyte was varied. In the present study, good agreement between the data points and the fitted curves was found in all the cases. The g (number of moles of alkali to 1 g of ion exchanger) of carboxylic ion exchanger was calculated from the concentration of supporting electrolyte (C), pH of the solution, and degree of neutralization of ion exchanger (x).
In order to recover nickel ion from waste water containing heavy metals, the PAN fibrous ion-exchanger with primary, secondary amine groups and carboxyl group was synthesized by acid and base hydrolysis. The hydrolysis yield of PAN fiber in acid solution was higher than base solution. The swelling ratio and ion-exchange capacity of PAN fiber which was synthesized in 1N $H_2SO_4$ solution at $80^{\circ}C$ for 7 hrs appeared 71.2% and 1.95 meq/g respectively. We investigated that the adsorption of nickel ion was approached 1.44 meq/g at 50 min and the maximum adsorption capacity of ion-exchanger was 2.48 meq/g. We confirmed that the $Ni^{+2}$ adsorption ability of the synthesized PAN fibrous ion-exchanger in this study is excellent.
We investigated uranium adsorption and adsorption process characteristics in brine water, changing column bed height packed with amidoximated polypropylene-g- acrylonitrile (AOPP-g-AN) fibrous ion-exchanger. Swelling ratios of AOPP-g-AN in fibrous ion-exchanger were 8.54g/g $H_2O_2$ and 8.87 g/g for $H_2O_2$ solvent respectively. Ion exchange capacity increased with degree of graft and showed the maximum, 3.99 meq/g at 100% degree of graft. In batch process, uranium adsorption had reached an initial equilibrium in 10 min with the adsorption rate of 9.5 mg/min. Finial adsorption capacity was 3.95 meq/g, and pH effect could not be observed. In continuous process, adsorption capacity depended on various packing ratios and showed the maximum, 3.92 meq/g at L/D=1. In L/D<2, breakthrough curve was shown two step by channeling flow and ununiform adsorption. Breakthrough time and adsorption capacity were 26 min and 3.63 meq/g, respectively, in brine water adsorption. When compared with actual brine water and model solution, there was no significant difference of adsorption characteristics.
The ion exchange characteristic of quaternary ammonium as functional group containing aminated acrylic fibrous ion exchanger were studied for the adsorption of linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (LAS) in a continuous ion exchange process. The adsorption capacities of aminated acrylic for LAS as the adsorption temperature were increased with increasing adsorption temperature and were equilibrated at $40^{\circ}C$. The maximum adsorption capacities as column packing ratio (L/D) were obtained at L/D>2. The adsorption capacity for LAS was increased with increasing pH and the maximum adsorption capacity as pH was obtained at pH 7. The effects of temperature and pH were similar to those of flow rate and concentration of LAS tin the breakthrough curves, the breakthrough time and slope of breakthrough corves decreased with increasing flow rate and concentration of LAS in adsorption process.
In this study, we have investigated the adsorption properties for nitrate ion in ground water using mixed resin type hybrid ion exchange (HIXF) and fiber type ion exchanger. Their swelling ratio (4.45 g/g) and ion exchange capacities (2.45 meq/g) were higer than the swelling ratio of IEC and IXF. Adsorption yield increased for nitrate $NO_3^-$ and sulfate $SO_4^{2-}$ ions were optimal at the concentration ratios of nitrate and sulfate below 1.0 and the adsorption yields were 100% and 20%, respectively. On the other hand it was shown that the degree of adsorpted for nitrate to pH 3, but it was little changed in the other pH range. We found that the selective adsorption capacity for nitrate was the optimal the mixing ratios of resin and fibrous ion exchanger of below 0.5.
In this study, we have investigated the preparation of mixed bead and fiber type hybrid ion-exchanger for recovering nickel ion from plating rinse water. There was little dependence of adsorption capacity for nickel ion on the mixing ratio of resin type and fiber type of ion exchangers. However, it increased with increasing the resin content in the mixed bed. It was shown that the data Langmuir and Freundlich's adsorption isotherm model were well fitted to the linear. Affinity between the functional groups in the ion exchanger and nickel ion in the process was confirmed. The pressure drop decreased with increasing the number of stage in the multistage bed, but it increased with increasing the resin content in the mixing bed. The initial breakthrough time in the multistage bed was short due to the increase of number of stage in the continuous process. It was found that the final breakthrough time of the multistage bed was little changed. The breakthrough time decreased with increasing the amount of fibrous ion exchanger in the mixed bed. The maximum adsorption capacities of the mixed and multistage beds were 2.51 meq/g and 2.69 meq/g, respectively. The desorption time for the nickel ion with $1N H_2SO_4$ solution was lower than 10 minutes and the yield of desorption was greater than 98 percent.
The purpose of this research is to absorb and remove sulfur dioxide existing in the air by using ion exchange non-woven fabric. So we found out very appropriate condition of anionic exchange fabric scrubber by measuring amount of SO$_2$ adsorption under the atmosphere that concentration, velocity, and humidity was 100∼200 ppm, 0.6∼1.0 m/sec, and 30∼90 RH%, respectively. Ion exchange capacity of ion exchanger showed the maximum value, 3.75 meq/g at pH 4, and adsorption equilibrium time was the maximum value, 30 h when gas velocity was 0.6 m/sec, moreover, at 80$\^{C}$, adsorption equilibrium time tended to decrease more than 10 h. When concentration was 200 ppm, while reaction speed between SO$_2$ and ligand of fibrous ion exchanger was getting faster, adsorption break point had a tendency to get faster as well. In addition, when relative humidity in the scrubber was 90%, adsorption efficiency was 7.6%/h that seemed to be 30% higher than 4.6%/h coming from the condition that relative humidity had been 30%, and it was totally absorbed under 5 wt% NaOH solution in 5 minutes.
In In order to remove harmful trace elements such as $Co^{2+}$, $Ni^{2+}$ , $Cr_2O_7\;^{2-}$ from water, we synthesized AN-co-(MMA/IA) according to various mole ratio of monomers and spun by wet-spinning. And multi-functional PAN ion exchangers were prepared by hydrolysis. We observed structure, degree of functionalization, ion exchange capacity, distribution coefficient and mechanical properties for ion exchanger. Anion exchange capacity decreased in 4.5 ~ 4.2 meq/g with increasing of IA content and cation exchange capacity increased in 1.8 ~ 2.2 meq/g. Tensile strength of the ion exchanger increased up to 0.008 mol% IA content and appeared maximum value by 216$kg/cm^2$Distribution coefficient for AN-co-(MMA/IA) ion exchanger appeared maximum value for Co(II), Ni(II) in pH 5-6 range and for Cr(III) in pH 3-4 range. And the adsorption capacity was in the order of Cr(III) > Co(II) > Ni(II) for multicomponent in continuous process.
In order to remove $NO_3;^-$ ion from ground-water, fibrous ion -exchangers, APP-g-GMA, were synthesized by GMA grafting onto PP trunk polymer with E-beam accelerator for pre-irradiation. Their degrees of grafting and amination yield increased up to $60^{\circ}C$ and showed maximum values as 133%, 88%, respectively. And their swelling ratio and ion exchange capacity at the maximum values are 86%, 2.5 meq/g, respectively which was higher than commercial ion-exchangers such as IMAC HP555 and Amberlite IRA 400. Optimum adsorption condition of $NO_3;^-$ ion was measured at pH 5~6 and -Cl form of APP-g-GMA containing trimethylammonium group showed the highest adsorption capacity.
