Carbon nanotube strain sensors, or so called "fuzzy fiber" sensors have not yet been studied sufficiently. These sensors are composed of a bundle of fiberglass fibers coated with CNT through a thermal chemical vapor deposition process. The characteristics of these fuzzy fiber sensors differ from a conventional nanocomposite in that the CNTs are anchored to a substrate fiber and the CNTs have a preferential orientation due to this bonding to the substrate fiber. A numerical model was constructed to predict the strain response of a composite with embedded fuzzy fiber sensors in order to compare result with the experimental results obtained in an earlier study. A comparison of the numerical and experimental responses was conducted based on this work. The longitudinal sensor output from the model matches nearly perfectly with the experimental results. The transverse and off-axis tests follow the correct trends; however the magnitude of the output does not match well with the experimental data. An explanation of the disparity is proposed based on microstructural interactions between individual nanotubes within the sensor.

This paper presents the tensile strength of shotcrete steel fibers depending on the shape of steel fiber. The experimental and numerical analyses are performed in this study. In experimental study, a series of laboratory pullout tests are carried out by changing both the angle and the length of the embedded steel fiber according to the corresponding type of steel fiber in order to derive the optimal type of steel fiber. Results obtained from the experimental work are evaluated and compared with the numerical analysis results. The results clearly show that the pull-out strength of the steel fiber are increased with increasing the hook angle and embedded angle of steel fiber. It is also found that the pull-out strength of the steel fiber is larger in case of the short steel fiber body length.

Among many fabrication methods of composite materials, filament winding is the most effective method for fabricating axis-symmetric structures such as pressure tanks and pipes. Filament wound pressure tanks are under high internal pressure during the operation and it has the complexity in damage mechanisms and failure modes. Fiber optic sensors, especially FBG sensors can be easily embedded into the composite structures contrary to conventional electric strain gages (ESGs). In addition, many FBG sensors can be multiplexed in single optical fiber using wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) techniques. In this paper, we fabricated several filament wound pressure tanks with embedded FBG sensors and conducted some kinds of experiments such as an impact test, a bending test, and a thermal cycling test. From the experimental results, it was successfully demonstrated that FBG sensors are very appropriate to composite structures fabricated by filament winding process even though they are embedded into composites by multiplexing.

Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors already have been the focus for structural health monitoring (SHM) due to their distinguishing advantages. However, as bare optical fiber is very fragile, bare FBG strain sensor without encapsulation can not properly be applied in practical infrastructures. Therefore encapsulation techniques for making encapsulated FBG strain sensor show very important in pushing forward the application of FBG strain sensors in SHM. In this paper, a simplified approximate method to analyze the stress transferring rules for embedded FBG strain sensors in concrete monitoring is put forward according to mechanics of composite materials. Shear lag theory is applied to analyze the stress transferring rule of embedded FBG strain sensor in measured host material at the first time. The measured host objects (concrete) and the encapsulated FBG strain sensor are regarded as a composite, and then the stress transfer formula and stress transfer coefficient of encapsulated FBG strain sensor are obtained.

When the fiber Bragg gratings are embedded in a fiber-optic Sagnac loop for measuring temperature or strain, it is difficult to separate the Bragg wavelengths. The transmitted light is mixed with the reflected Bragg wavelengths in the photo-detector, working as noises. To suppress the noises, we placed the FBG sensors and a fiber-optic attenuator at asymmetric positions in the loop. With the arrangement the reflected light became much bigger than the transmitted light, enabling the separation of the reflected Bragg wavelengths with almost the same signal-to-noise ratio of the FBG sensors outside the loop.

In our research, we focused on the FBG sensor system which is one of the fiber optic sensor system. The FBG sensor system is used for structural measurements. The problem of FBG sensor is very thin and weak. The methods that can protect FBG optical fiber sensor front outside forces such as the impacts are investigated. The FBG sensor embedded in the fiber reinforced composites which can replace the reinforcing steel bars in concretes can be applied to the concrete structures by embedding to the composite materials. The progresses in tensile strength of FBG sensor embedded in the reinforcing FRP bars in the concrete structures compare to plain FBGs were observed and the good long term durability is expected.

In this research, for the smart health monitoring of the hydrogen storage high pressure composite vessel, the feasibility study of an embedded fiber Bragg grating(FBG) sensor is carried out. To verify strain measurement in various temperature environment which is needed for the hydrogen pressure vessel, tensile test of a composite specimen with both an embedded FBG sensor and a strain gauge is made in low temperature. Before we try a real-size hydrogen storage pressure vessel, a small & cheap composite pressure vessel having the same structure is fabricated with embedded FBG sensors and tested. In the case of an aluminum liner inside the vessel, survivability of FBG sensors at the interface is lower than the other areas.

In this paper, a new structural health monitoring technique for composite laminates through the use of embedded fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors is presented. The method traces the ply stress states of a laminate and compares them with failure criteria during the service time of structures. The ply stress state of every ply composing the composite laminate can be obtained using classical lamination theory by embedded FBG sensors in the laminate. Graphite/epoxy laminate specimens, embedded with three FBG sensors, were fabricated. Tension tests were performed to evaluate the ply stress states tracing technique. Experimental results show that laminates experience fracture when the ply stress states are over the boundaries of failure criteria. In this method, critical damage can be detected by the ply stress states which are close to the boundaries of the failure criteria.

Large and complex structures are being built now-a-days and, they are required to be functional even under extreme loading and environmental conditions. In order to meet the safety and maintenance demands, there is a need to build sensors integrated structural system, which can sense and provide necessary information about the structural response to complex loading and environment. Sophisticated tools have been developed for the design and construction of civil engineering structures. However, very little has been accomplished in the area of monitoring and rehabilitation. The employment of appropriate sensor is therefore crucial, and efforts must be directed towards non-destructive testing techniques that remain functional throughout the life of the structure. Fiber optic sensors are emerging as a superior non-destructive tool for evaluating the health of civil engineering structures. Flexibility, small in size and corrosion resistance of optical fibers allow them to be directly embedded in concrete structures. The inherent advantages of fiber optic sensors over conventional sensors include high resolution, ability to work in difficult environment, immunity from electromagnetic interference, large band width of signal, low noise and high sensitivity. This paper brings out the potential and current status of technology of fiber optic sensors for civil engineering applications. The importance of employing fiber optic sensors for health monitoring of civil engineering structures has been highlighted. Details of laboratory studies carried out on fiber optic strain sensors to assess their suitability for civil engineering applications are also covered.

Smart structural system is defined as structural system with a certain-level of autonomy relying on the embedded functions of sensors, actuators and processors, that can automatically adjust structural characteristics, in response to the change in external disturbance and environments, toward structural safety and serviceability as well as the extension of structural service life. In this study, carbon and glass hybrid fiber materials were investigated fundamentally for the applicability of self diagnosis in smart concrete structural system as embedded functions of sensors.
