  • Figure '8' type, passively-mode-locked erbium-doped-fiber ring laser was developed, incorporating a nonlinear loop mirror. Transmittance of the loop mirror was found to be dependent on the incident light intensity due to the non-reciprocal nonlinear phase shift, which enables the passive mode locking of the laser. Self-starting of stable mode locking was possible with only controlling the polarization controllers inside the cavity without any help of external perturbation or modulation. The mode-locked output pulse shape was discussed in relation with the transmission characteristics of nonlinear loop mirror.

  • Soliton pulse outputs are generated with figure '8' type erbium-doped fiber laser mode-locked by using a fiber loop mirror. The fiber loop mirror consists of an erbium-doped fiber amplifier at the one end of the loop, and 504 m-long dispersion-shifted fiber as a nonlinear medium. By pumping with a $1.48{\mu}m$ wavelength laser diode and adjusting the polarization controllers inside the loop, soliton pulses are generated with 1574 nm center wavelength and 1.2 nm linewidth. The soliton pulses are found randomly spaced within the fundamental period corresponding to cavity round trip time. The autocorrelation trace shows that the pulse width is 2.4 ps, which is in good agreement with the theoretical prediction. The pulsewidth- bandwidth product is found to be 0.348 which means that the pulses are nearly transform-limited.imited.

  • In this paper, a new wavelength converter using an SOA(Semiconductor Optical Amplifier)-loop-mirror for NRZ(NonReturn to Zero) optical data has been proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Conventional nonlinear fiber-loop-mirror methods can perform RZ-to-RZ, NRZ-to-RZ, and RZ-to-NRZ data format conversion, but NRZ-to-NRZ conversion has not been demonstrated until now. The experiment for the conversion from a 1300 nm NRZ data signal at 1.5 Gbps to a 1550 nm NRZ data one is successfully performed using a fiber-loop-mirror with 1300 nm-SOA.

  • A new cavity configuration for passive mode locking of fiber laser is proposed and demonstrated. It consists of a dichroic mirror at one end of the cavity, and a nonlinear loop mirror, which is a Sagnac loop, at the other end. The experimental observations are described for both Er-doped fiber laser and Nd-doped fiber laser. laser.

  • A single-mode erbium-doped fiber laser is constructed by using a intracore fiber Bragg grating and a unidirectional fiber loop mirror. The laser cavity is designed in such a way that the laser beam forms a travelling wave in the gain medium by placing the erbium-doped fiber inside the unidirectional loop and that the wavelength-selective feedback is made from the outside of the loop by a fiber grating with 0.2 nm reflection linewidth. An additional fiber ring resonator is constructed and used as an optical spectrum analyzer to observe the variation of the laser mode spectra. As the result, relatively stable single mode, single polarization output is observed for the most of the time except some mode hoppings in minute scale due to enviommental temperature variations. tions.

  • As a reflector of reference arm in OCT systems, a coated fiber reflector has mostly used. Instead, this paper has realized the swaept source optical coherence tomography system using a loop mirror within a reference arm. Through the experiments for a tilted thin glass plate, we found that the loop mirror is better than the coated fiber typed mirror for obtaining the clear image.

  • We have theoretically analyzed and experimentally observed the effects of wavelength dependent birefringence inside a laser cavity on the output characteristics of fiber lasers with a figure eight geometry. The spectral and polarization characteristics of fiber lasers are found to be very susceptible to the resultant birefringence composed of the intrinsically existing wavelength dependent birefringence and the externally induced birefringences inside the fiber. For the variation of twist-induced birefringence inside the nonlinear amplifying loop mirror, the laser output power and center wave-length of continuous wave lasers change periodically, but the polarization characteristics remains nearly unchanged. The changes of the birefringence inside the linear loop has little effect on the spectral characteristics but changes the polarization properties such as the polarization direction.
