We propose a novel method to design a dispersion map for a WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplexing) ring network with the capability of wavelength reconfiguration. The method is simple, but gives us an optimum set of DCMs (Dispersion Compensation Modules) which satisfies a given value of the tolerable residual dispersion. The proposed method does not depend on compensation method, fiber type, or modulation format. We also demonstrate numerically how it works with an example 10-node ring network.

We have developed a compact and high-power mode-locked fiber laser for multilayered optical memory. Fiber lasers have the potential to be compact and stable light sources that can replace bulk solid-state lasers. To generate high-power pulses, we used stretched-pulse mode locking. The average power and pulse width of the output pulse from the fiber laser that we developed were 109 mW and 2.1 ps, respectively. The dispersion of the output pulse was compensated with an external single-mode fiber of 2.5 m length. The pulse was compressed from 2.1 ps to 93 fs by dispersion compensation. The fiber laser we have developed is possible to use as a light source of multilayered optical memory. We also present a fiber confocal microscope as an alignment-free readout system of multilayered optical memories. The fiber confocal microscope does not require fine pinhole position alignment because the fiber core is used as the point light source and the pinhole, and both of which are always located at the conjugated point. The configuration reduces the required accuracy of pinhole position alignment. With these techniques we can present an all-fiber recording and readout system for multilayered memories.

PURPOSES: As pavement generally provides service shorter than an expected life cycle, maintenance cost increases gradually. In order to help extending the service life and reduce maintenance cost, a new multi-functional composite pavement system is being developed in Korea. METHODS: This study is a part to develop the multi-functional composite pavement and is to investigate the mechanical performances of fiber-reinforced lean concrete for pavement subbase. The inherent problem of fiber reinforced concrete is dispersion of fibers in concrete mix. This study additionally evaluated fiber dispersion characteristics with respect to different fiber types. RESULTS: From the test results, the compressive strengths of the concretes satisfied the required limit of 5MPa at 7days. The standard deviation of the measured number of fibers were lower in the order of nylon, steel fiber and polypropylene. CONCLUSIONS: Reject ash was shown to be satisfactory as a replacement material to Portland cement in lean concrete base. The fiber volume fraction is suggested to be 0.4% even though the fracture toughness did not vary significantly with respect to fiber types. However, fracture energy absorbed up to complete failure increased with the increased fiber volume fraction increment.
A tapered As2S3 photonic crystal fiber (PCF) with four layers of air holes in a hexagonal array around the core is designed in this paper. Numerical simulation shows that the dispersion D decreases and the nonlinearity coefficient γ increases from the thick to the thin end along the tapered PCF. We simulate the midinfrared pulse compression in the tapered As2S3 PCF using the adaptive split-step Fourier method. Initial Gaussian pulses of 4.4 ps and a central wavelength of 2.5 ㎛ propagating in the tapered PCF are located in the anomalous dispersion region. With an average power of assumed input pulses at 3 mW and a repetition frequency of 81.0 MHz, we theoretically obtain a pulse duration of 56 fs and a compression factor of 78 when the pulse propagates from the thick end to the thin end of the tapered PCF. When confinement loss in the tapered PCF is included in the simulation, the minimum pulse duration reaches 72 fs; correspondingly, the maximum compression factor reaches 61. The results show that in the anomalous-dispersion region, midinfrared pulses can be efficiently compressed in a dispersion-decreasing and nonlinearity-increasing tapered As2S3 PCF. Due to confinement loss in the tapered fiber, the efficiency of pulse compression is suppressed.

We analyze transmission performance of radio frequency signal in WDM-ROF (wavelength division multiplexing - radio over fiber) system employing photonic crystal fiber. In a WDM-ROF system employing conventional single-mode fiber, transmission performance of radio frequency signal is analyzed depending on each WDM channel. In this case, each WDM channel experiences power fluctuation of received RF signal in remote node because of double sidebands of the modulated signal and wavelength dependent dispersion of single mode fiber. This RF power fluctuation acts as a design constraint in viewpoint of system design. By employing photonic crystal fiber (PCF) with dispersion compensation characteristics, the transmission performance of RF signal can be improved compared with the case with SMF only.

In this paper, optimal position of optical phase conjugator(OPC) for best compensating distorted WDM channels due to both chromatic dispersion and self phase modulation(SPM) is numerically investigated, and the compensation characteristics of overall WDM channels at this position is investigated, comparing with that in case of OPC placed at mid-way of total transmission length. It is confirmed that the compensation extents in WDM system with OPC is more improved by the shifting OPC position from the mid-way of total transmission length. And, we confirmed that the optimal position of OPC must be selected to the position decreasing not only eye opening penalty(EOP) of overall WDM channels but also EOP deviation between WDM channels, and this OPC position should be altered as various system parameters such as modulation format, and fiber dispersion, etc. Using proposed configuration, it is possible to remove all in-line dispersion compensator, reducing span losses and system costs.

In this paper, the optimal position of optical phase conjugator(OPC) excellently compensating distorted WDM channels with initial frequency chirp due to both chromatic dispersion and self phase modulation(SPM) is numerically investigated. Highly-nonlinear dispersion shifted fiber(HNL-DSF) is used as a nonlinear medium of OPC in order to widely compensate WDM signal band. It is confirmed that if the OPC position was shifted from mid-way of total transmission length dependence on the initial frequency chirp as well as modulation format and fiber dispersion coefficient, it is possible to cancel the performance degradation owing to the initial frequency chirp. Using proposed configuration, it is possible to remove all in-line dispersion compensator, reducing span losses and system costs in the long-haul broadband WDM systems.

We present a novel chromatic dispersion measurement method using a spectral domain interferometer for single mode optical fiber over a wide spectral range (200 nm). This technique is based on the Mach-Zehnder interferometer using a white light source and spectrometer. A phase was directly retrieved from a measured spectral interferogram to obtain relative group velocity, chromatic dispersion and dispersion slope. The measured results with the proposed method were compared with those obtained using a conventional measurement method. Those results have good agreement with each other. Our proposed method can simply, accurately, and quickly (< 500 ms) measure chromatic information for a short length of optical fiber as well as optical device.

In this investigation, we constructed and demonstrated a simple Yb-doped fiber laser, of which longitudinal modes are mode-locked without any additional devices to compensate the dispersion caused by optical components. Non-linear polarization rotation (NPR) was adopted for the mode-locking mechanism and a polarization controller (PC) was used for a kind of spectral filters to restrict the bandwidth for mode-locking. As the result, the laser was successfully operated as mode-locked with the repetition rate of 42.2 MHz and the spectrum was broadened up to approximately 16 nm at 1033 nm center wavelength when the laser was mode-locked. In this paper, the operation of the developed Yb-doped mode-locked laser is explained with the concept of Lyot filter realized by a PC, which enables mode-locking under normal dispersion. In the industrial applications, this laser can be used as a seed laser of the high power lasers for optical manufacturing.
