An image analysis processing method for the measurement of nanofiber diameter was developed. For the analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images of electrospun fiber were prepared and applied to the individual measurement of the fiber diameter by using the developed and the traditional manual methods. Both methods provided a similar fiber distribution. The fiber average diameters were similar but the variance of the new method was larger than that of the manual method. The average diameters from the two methods exhibited a linear relationship with a high coefficient. The developed method can be used as a practical tool to estimate the fiber diameter of the electro spun web.

Motivation: Fibers as the extracellular filamentous structures determine the shape of the cytoskeletal structures. Their characterization and reconstruction from a 3D cellular image represent very useful quantitative information at the cellular level. In this paper, we presented a novel automatic method to extract fiber diameter distribution through a pipeline to reconstruct fibers from 3D fluorescence confocal images. The pipeline is composed of four steps: segmentation, skeletonization, template fitting and fiber tracking. Segmentation of fiber is achieved by defining an energy based on tensor voting framework. After skeletonizing segmented fibers, we fit a template for each seed point. Then, the fiber tracking step reconstructs fibers by finding the best match of the next fiber segment from the previous template. Thus, we define a fiber as a set of templates, based on which we calculate a diameter distribution of fibers.
The frequency distribution diagrams of Korean diffuse-porous woods, 36 families, 75 genera, 145 species, 215 specimens in relation to habit and phenology were analyzed. As the habit character changes from shrub to tree, such quantitative features as vessel frequency, percentage of solitary vessels, length/diameter(L/D) ratio of vessel element decreased but tangential vessel diameter, fiber length/vessel element length(F/V) ratio increased. Qualitative features such as helical vessel wall thickening, diffuse distribution of longitudinal parenchyma, heterogeneous ray composition decreased, while alternate intervessel pits, libriform wood fiber, simple perforations increase. As the phenology character changes from evergreen to deciduous species, such quantitative features as percentage of solitary vessels, vessel element length and L/D ratio decreased but tangential vessel diameter, F/V ratio increased. Diffuse distribution of longitudinal parenchyma, heterogeneous ray composition, and crystals in qualitative features decreased, while alternate intervessel pits, libriform wood fiber, simple perforation of vessel element, ray width and ray height increased.
Optical Temperature Distribution measurement System (OTDS) is completely different from conventional electric point sensor in that it uses the optical fiber itself as the sensor. This new concept in temperature measuring system requires only one fiber to be laid. The use of optical fiber also gives the advantage of small diameter, light weight, explosion resistance, and electromagnetic noise resistance. The OTDS is a sensor which is capable of making a precise measurement over a wide range of areas using only a single optical fiber. Since current temperature sensors, such as the thermocouple, are only used to measure temperaturea of point, they are almost impractical for measuring a wider range because of the extremely high cost. In comparision with current sensors, the optical fiber distributed temperature sensor can make much quicker and more precise measurements at a comparatively low cost.

High temperature uniaxial compression tests in the alpha single phase region were carried out on the Ti -43mo1%Al intermetallic compound, in order to obtain oriented lamellar microstructure. The compression deformation temperatures and strain rates are from 1573k to 1623k and 1.0x10$^{-4}$ s to 5.0x10$^{-3}$ s, respectively. Fully lamellar microstructure was observed after the uniaxial compression deformation in a single phase region followed by cooling to room temperature. Lamellar colony diameter depended on strain rates and test temperatures. The diameter varied between 8601m and 300fm. Stress-strain curve showed a work softening and the size of lamellar colony diameter varied depending on peak stresses. This shows the occurrence of dynamic recrystallization. Texture measurements after the uniaxial compression deformation, showed the development of fiber during dynamic recrystallization. It is seen that the area for the maximum pole density existed in 35 degrees away from the compression plane. The texture sharpens with a decrease in strain rate
The purpose of the thesis is to develop simulation program for forecasting of optical connector. So we can achieve the time and the money saving for making the optical connector. Optical performance (insertion loss) of optical connector mainly relies on 3 misalignment factors-ferrule factor due to mis-manufacture from design, auto-centering effect that is fiber behavior phenomena between hole and fiber, fiber misalignment factor. Simulation use experimental data with auto-centering effect and fiber factor and use pseudo data with ferrule through random number generation because it is developing stage. In this study we a, pp.y kernel density estimation method with experimental data in order to know whether it belong to or not specific parametric distribution family. And we simulate to forecast insertion loss of optical multifiber connector under specific design model using nonparametric bootstrap resampling data and parametric pseudo samples from uniform distribution. We obtain the tolerance specifications of misalignment factors satisfying not exceed in maximum 1.0dB and choose optimal hole diameter.

Leak detection is one of the most important challenges in condition monitoring of water pipelines. Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors offer an attractive technique to detect leak signals. In this paper, leak measurements were conducted on a water distribution pilot plant with a length of 270 m and a diameter of 100 mm. FBG sensors were installed on the pipeline surface and used to detect leak vibration signals. The leak was demonstrated with 1-, 2-, 3-, and 4-mm diameter leak holes in four different pipe types. The frequency response of leak signals was analyzed by fast Fourier transform analysis in real time. In the experiment, the frequency range of leak signals was approximately 340-440 Hz. The frequency shifts of leak signals according to the pipe type and the size of the leak hole were demonstrated at a pressure of 1.8 bar and a flow rate of 25.51 m3/h. Results show that frequency shifts detected by FBG sensors can be used to detect leaks in pipelines.

The influences of various carbonization temperatures on electrical resistivity and morphologies of polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-based nanofiber webs were studied. The diameter size distribution and morphologies of the nanofiber webs were observed by a scanning electron microscope. The electrical resistivity behaviors of the webs were evaluated by a volume resistivity tester. From the results, the volume resistivity of the carbon webs was ranged from $5.1{\times}10^{-1}\;{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$ to $3.0{\times}10^{-2}\;{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$, and the average diameter of the fiber webs was varied in the range of 310 to 160 nm with increasing the carbonization temperature. These results could be explained that the graphitic region of carbon webs was formed after carbonization at high temperatures. And the amorphous structure of polymeric fiber webs was significantly changed to the graphitic crystalline, resulting in shrinking the size of fiber diameters.

A process control system has been developed for measurement and characterization of the nanofiber web qualities. The nano-fiber information system (NAFIS) developed consists of a measurement device and an analysis algorithm, which are a microscope-laser sensor fusion system and a process information system, respectively. It has been found that NAFIS is so successful in detecting irregularities of pore and diameter that the resulting product has been quitely under control even at the high production rate. Pore distribution, fiber diameter and mass uniformity have been readily measured and analyzed by integrating the non-contact measurement technology and the random function-based time domain signal/image processing algorithm. Qualifies of the nano-fiber webs have been revealed in a way that the statistical parameters for the characteristics above are calculated and stored in a certain interval along with the time-specific information. Quality matrix, scale of homogeneity is easily obtained through the easy-to-use GUI information. Finally, ANFIS has been evaluated both for the real-time measurement and analysis, and for the process monitoring.

Cabon fiber of general purpose was prepared from coal tar pitch modified with 10% benzoquinine(BQ) at 380C for 3 hours. Such a modified pitch raised the softening of the pitch from 85C to 271C at the yield of 40%. The modified pitch was spun smoothly at a rate of 480m/min into a fiber of 20um diameter. The fiber was stabilized stepwise at 236C (5C/min) and 312C (1C/min) for 3 hours each. Both carbonized and graphitized fibers exhibited tensile strength of 570MPa which appears large enough as a precursor for active carbon fiber. The activated carbon fiber prepared exhibited relatively high surface area of 2062m2/g at 76% burn-off and rather narrow distribution pore size of 20A.
