  • Thermally-stabilized fiber-optic current sensors are proposed and demonstrated. The sensor head is made of two coil formers combined perpendicularly. In this sensor head, bending-induced birefringences can be reduced to the level much smaller than those of the single former type because the eigen-axes of the two perpendicular coil formers are made orthogonal to each other. Moreover, thermal variation of the birefringence is also expected to be minimized by the orthogonality of the two polarization eigen-axes. We changed the temperature slowly in the range of 20~45$^{\circ}C$ during 100 minutes. The overall linearity of the sensor is better than 1.2% in the range of 0~1000A. The long-term fluctuation of the sensor is less than 1% when measured for 3 hours at 500A and room temperature. Two orthogonally-polarized laser diodes are combined together to make the incident beam unpolarized. In the signal processing, the signals are separated by two parts and normalized respectively, which minimize the efects of optical fluctuations coming from sources, connectors, etc.

  • In this study, we demonstrated Fourier-domain/swept-source optical coherence tomography (FD/SS-OCT) at a center wavelength of 800 nm for in vivo human retinal imaging. A wavelength-swept source was constructed with a semiconductor optical amplifier, a fiber Fabry-Perot tunable filter, isolators, and a fiber coupler in a ring cavity. Our swept source produced a laser output with a tuning range of 42 nm (779 to 821 nm) and an average power of 3.9 mW. The wavelength-swept speed in this configuration with bidirectionality is 2,000 axial scans per second. In addition, we suggested a modified zero-crossing method to achieve equal sample spacing in the wavenumber (k) domain and to increase the image depth range. FD/SS-OCT has a sensitivity of ~89.7 dB and an axial resolution of 10.4 ${\mu}m$ in air. When a retinal image with 2,000 A-lines/frame is obtained, an acquisition speed of 2.0 fps is achieved.

  • The characteristics of the supercontinuum generated in photonic crystal fibers were investigated by using the generalized nonlinear $Schr\"{o}dinger$ equation and the split-step Fourier method. Based on the simulated results, we generated the supercontinuum spectrum with the flatness of ${\pm}4dB$ in the wavelength range of 650 to 900 nm by employing a 200-fs pulse of Ti:sapphire laser and a commercial photonic crystal fiber.

  • The speckle pattern is formed by laser light from a multimode optical fiber. The speckle fluctuation is the result of interference among propagation modes when the optical fiber is subjected to a mechanical perturbation at any point along its length. The experiments were carried on for the study of the feasibility of producing an intrusion detection system using the speckle fluctuation. The speckle fluctuation signals were monitored at real time by an oscilloscope which was connected with a rectifier and a FVC. We used a jig as a PD holder to improve the sensitivity of speckle phenomena and simplify its structure. So we can know the time and magnitude of perturbation.

  • In this paper, we have fabricated by means of the "Micro-Block Stacking (MBS)" method the 8 pin mini DIL integrated Triplexer, which can transmit CATV and voice/data at the same time in a single fiber. Our MBS technique is a novel scheme of compact optical module packaging which secures precision positioning of the components on the optical beam path by prefixed stacks of ceramic blocks. The subassembly in which a laser diode, two receiver photodiodes, two WDM filters, and four micro lenses are integrated is only $5.40mm{\times}2.15mm{\times}1.05mm$ in size. As the Triplexer is aligned to the single mode fiber, the transmitter power of -14.5 dBm and the receiver sensitivities of 0.83 A/W, 0.73 A/W for 1550 nm, 1490 nm, respectively are obtained.

  • Since more than two decades, the conventional PD detecting systems have been employed in order to detect the partial discharges occurring inside the HV power apparatus for their diagnosis by use of different type of detection such as acoustic and UHF detection method. Regardless of their wide on-site application, a certain number of technical inconveniences have been disclosed as follows : multistage amplification. large volume, susceptible to external noise and high price. In this respect, the optical measurement techniques are widely proposed in these days in this concerned field ascribed to the following advantages : immune to external EMI noise and broad band response of the Pockels cell covering from DC to GHz. However, the reliability of several proposed techniques enabling to measure the electric field inside the large high power apparatus has not yet been well approved In this work, an optical measuring system, based on the Pockels effect, has been developed for measuring the field variation due to the corona discharges occurring in air and in oil. This system consists of He-Ne laser, single mode optical fiber, multi mode optical fiber, polarizing film, Y-cut LiNbO3 cell, photo detector, digital oscilloscope and personal computer with GPIB. For this purpose, optical probe has been specially designed and realized and put into the needle-plane electrode. Afterward, same measurement is carried out in oil. We demonstrate the characteristic of the optical measuring system and the measurement results.

  • In this paper, we propose a WDM optical true time-delay (OTTD) beam former for phased way antenna (PAA) systems. It is composed of a delay lines matrix and a multiwavelength source with discrete DFB laser diodes. The building block of a delay lines matrix is a $2\times2$ optical MEMS switch with proper fiber-optic delay line connected between cross ports. A $4\times3$ matrix using four DFB lasers has been fabricated with unit time-delay difference of 12 ps. Maximum time-delay error was measured to be -1.74 ps and +1.14 ps at a radiation angle of $46.05^{\circ}$, corresponding to error range of $-2.87^{\circ}\sim+1.88^{\circ}$. By measuring time-delays at six different RF frequencies from 5- to 10-GHz, we verified the true time-delay characteristic of our OTTD.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop and propose creative smart bags in emotional e-textiles using LEDs that inform smartphone users of motion-induced luminescence and ringing of cell phones. The LED light-emitting operation tasks produced in the study were applied to each of the three design smart bags, setting the five cases of luminance by a call initiated, absent phone, rejecting answering phone, texting, and motion-induced luminescence. In the male laptop bags of LED luminous images using wappen, 10 LEDs could be separated by a total of three pins to display the luminous mode, and all 10 LEDs became a total of five luminous patterns, including all that illuminate and those that illuminate randomly. E-wappen rendered the motif a strong sense of visibility and performed six roles on phone rings and texting. To develop a women's tote bag, we did a laser cut and attached the leather strips and placed 10 triangular LEDs to form a geometric LED e-textile. It provides the possibility of transforming simple design from traditional fashion into a more interesting and various smart designs. An entertainment smart bag using graphic design was constructed by applying a tilt sensor to look like a light in the night sky by shaking and moving the bag. The graphic design and composition of LEDs indicate that LEDs and fashion item are applied in harmony rather than heterogeneous, enabling them to be applied as fashion-oriented wearable smart products.

  • In this study, the newly constructed optical measurement system, which was mainly composed of a parametric tunable laser and a near infrared photoelectric multiplier, was introduced to clarify the optical characteristics of wood as discontinuous body with anisotropic cellular structure from the viewpoint of the time-of-flight near infrared spectroscopy (TOF-NIRS). The combined effects of the cellular structure of wood sample, the wavelength of the laser beam λ, and the detection position of transmitted light on the time resolved profiles were investigated in detail. The variation of the attenuance of peak maxima At, the time delay of peak maxima Δt and the variation of full width at half maximum Δw were strongly dependent on the feature of cellular structure of a sample and the wavelength of the laser beam. The substantial optical path length became about 30 to 35 times as long as sample thickness except the absorption band of water. Δt ${\times}$ Δw representing the light scattering condition increased exponentially with the sample thickness or the distance between the irradiation point and the end of sample. Around the λ=900-950 nm, there may be considerable light scattering in the lumen of tracheid, which is multiple specular reflection and easy to propagate along the length of wood fiber. Such tendency was remarkable for soft wood with the aggregate of thin layers of cell walls. When we apply TOF-NIRS to the cellular structural materials like wood, it is very important to give attention to the difference in the light scattering within cell wall and the multiple specular-like reflections between cell walls. We tried to express the characteristics of the time resolved profile on the basis of the optical parameters for light propagation determined by the previous studies, which were absorption coefficient K and scattering coefficient S from Kubelka-Munk theory and n from nth power cosine model of radiant intensity. The wavelength dependency of the product of K/S and n, which expressed the light-absorbing and -scattering condition and the degree of anisotropy, respectively, was similar to that of the time delay of peak maxima Δt. The variation of the time resolved profile is governed by the combination of these parameters. So, we can easily find the set of parameters for light propagation synthetically from Δt.

  • The structural function of three egg membrane layers and cuticle layer, and the effectiveness of 5 film coatings (chitosan, starch, gelatin, dextrin, mineral oil) on the prevention of Salmonella enteritidis penetration was investigated using confocal scanning laser microscopy (CSLM). Diameters of outer membrane fibers, inner membrane fibers and limiting membrane particles in eggshell were $1.5{\sim}7.2$, $0.8{\sim}2.0$ and $0.1{\sim}1.4\;{\mu}m$, respectively and average thicknesses were 10.0, 3.5, $3.6\;{\mu}m$, respectively. Average thickness of cuticle layer was $6.0\;{\mu}m$ and cuticle layer covered $40{\sim}80%$ of total eggshell surface. Average coating films thickness for chitosan, starch, gelatin, dextrin and mineral oil were 2.2, 2.5, 3.9, 3.6 and $5.0\;{\mu}m$, respectively. After immersion process eggshell surface was almost completely covered by coating films. Chitosan coating was most effective among 5 film coatings in inhibiting growth of Salmonella enteritidis. Penetration process of Salmonella enteritidis through eggshell was investigated by multicolor imaging using CSLM and plate counting. Cuticle layer was the most important structure in blocking the penetration. Among 5 film coatings, chitosan showed the best and similar effectiveness with cuticle layer.
