  • The effect of adding transparent fluid (TF) to fowl semen on fertilizing capacity of fowl spermatozoa and on hatchability was studied. Diluted semen and semen containing 15% TF were stored for 24 h at $3-5^{\circ}C$ and inseminated at weekly basis for 5 consecutive weeks. No significant differences were observed in fertility, hatchability and embryonic mortality among the treatments. The results suggest that TF is not necessarily detrimental to fowl spermatozoa even when mixed with semen and stored outside the body.

  • The effects of controlled energy restriction and duration of pre-incubation egg holding on fertility, hatchability and hatch losses were evaluated in aged broiler breeders (64 wk). The energy (ME) required for maintenance, activity, growth and anticipated egg production was calculated and offered to a control group (283-471 kcal/kg) from 21-64 weeks of age. In three other groups, ME was quantitatively reduced either by 20% (SER; severe energy restriction) or 10% (MER; moderate energy restriction) and increased by10% (EEF; excess energy feeding) over the control group (CER; controlled energy restriction). Each diet was offered to 130 pullets in individual cages, and the quantity of ME increased with age. At the end of 64 weeks, fertile eggs were collected from each dietary group for 11 consecutive days and grouped under 4 holding periods based on the length of storage (2, 5, 8 or 11 d). The influence of energy regimes, egg holding intervals and their interaction was evaluated on fertility, hatch losses and hatchability. Broiler breeders maintained on SER regime (231-419 kcal/d) produced maximum number of eggs (993) followed by MER (819), CER (624) and EEF (438) during the 11-day period. The percent fertility and hatchability was significantly (p$\leq$0.05) higher in SER and MER groups compared to CER and EEF. However, energy regimes did not influence the loss in egg weight during pre-incubation storage, shell weight, shell thickness or hatch losses as dead germs and dead in shell. The improvement in hatchability in SER and MER groups appeared to be closely related to higher fertility and lower embryonic mortality. Holding of eggs for 11 days showed a linear loss in egg weight with the length of storage, but did not influence the fertility and hatch losses. The percent hatchability on eggs set was maximum when storage period was restricted to 5 days. The interaction between energy regimes and egg holding periods exhibited better hatchability results with SER regime when eggs were held for 5 days. Response to MER was not different from SER. It was obvious that energy restriction during production period had a positive influence on egg number, fertility and hatchability in aged breeders. At 64 weeks of age, holding of fertile eggs for 5 days prior to incubation was adequate for optimum hatchability in breeders.

  • In this study, pooled whole semen and diluted semen with skim milk lactose solution and yolk skim milk lactose solution were inseminated at 6 and 7 days interval during 90 days. Egg production, fertility and hatchability were investigated. The results obtained from this study are summarized as following: 1. The average fertility of 57.8% for whole semen was clearly higher than that of 35.2% for diluted semen during 90 days insemination trial. 2. The highest fertility was a, pp.ared from 35 to 99 days after insemination for the whole semen, but from 28 to 60 days for the diluted semen during 90 days insemination trial. 3. In case of 7 days insemination interval, highest fertility of 86.6 and 70.0% for the whole semen and the diluted semen was a, pp.ared on 2 days after insemination and thereafter the fertility was gradually decreased according to passage of insemination. The lowest fertility of 35.0 and 0.0% for the whole semen and diluted semen was a, pp.ared on 1 day after insemination. 4. In case of 6 days insemination interval, highest fertility of 80.0 and 55.8% for the whole semen and the diluted semen was also a, pp.ared on 2 days after insemination and thereafter the fertility was slowly decreased according to passage of insemination. However, lowest fertility of 25.0 and 20.0% for the whole semen and the diluted semen was a, pp.ared on 0 day after insemination. 5 It suggests that there was no difference in fertility between the skim milk lactose and the yolk skim milk lactose dilutors. 6. In case of whole semen, average fertility of 7 days insemnaition interval was a, pp.rently lower than that of 6 days, however there was no difference in fertility between 6 and 7 days insemination interval. 7. Insemination interval of 6 and 7 days and passage day after insemination did not alter egg production and hatchability of fertilized egg production and hatchability of fertilized egg in both whole and diluted semen.

  • This experiment was carried out to study effects fo dosage and insemination interval on fertility and hatchability of whole semen and diluted semen with yolk skim milk and skim milk dilutors. The results obtained are as follows: 1. Whole semen showed higher fertility than diluted semen with yolk skim milk and skim milk dilutors. In case of diluted semen, the fertility was higher in 0.04$m\ell$ dosage than 0.02$m\ell$ and in skim milk than yolk skim milk dilutor. 2. The average fertility in inseminational intervals of 6, 5, 4 and 3 days was 52.4, 35.5, 48.7 and 44.2% in whole semen and 40.6, 17.2, 13.9 and 20.5% in 0.04$m\ell$ diluted semen with yolk skim milk dilutor. The fertility was not improved by shortening of insemination interval. 3. There was no considerable difference in hatchability of fertilized egg among the dosage of 0.02$m\ell$ of whole semen, 0.02$m\ell$ and 0.04$m\ell$ of diluted semen with yolk skim milk, and among the insemination intervals of 6, 5, 4 and 3 days. 4. Some differences in fertility among the passed days after insemination were decreased in the whole semen by shortening insemination interval from 6 and 5 days to 4 and 3days and also decreased in the diluted semen by shortening it to 3 days and by increasing dosage from 0.02$m\ell$ to 0.04$m\ell$. 5. Hatchability of fertilized egg showed no difference among the passed days during 6 days insemination interval both in the whole semen and the diluted semen. 6. The whole semen and the diluted semen with skim milk had not considerable difference in fertility among the passed days during 3 and 4 days insemination intervals, but the diluted semen with yolk skim milk had. 7. Hatchability of fertilized egg from the whole semen diluted semen with yolk skim milk and skim milk dilutors showed no difference among the passed days during 3 and 4 days insemination intervals.

  • Duck eggs from Indigenous (desi), Khaki Campbell and Crossbred (Indian Runner $\times$ Khaki Campbell, $F_1$) were incubated to investigate fertility, hatchability and other related traits. The fertility was highest in crossbred followed by Khaki Campbell and Indigenous ducks respectively. The embryonic mortality was highest in Khaki Campbell followed by Indigenous and crossbred respectively. The embryonic mortality was higher in eggs of 7 days pre-incubation holding period and lower in eggs of 3 days pre-incubation holding period. A significant positive correlation was found between temperature and embryonic mortality as well as relative humidity and embryonic mortality. The hatchability on fertile eggs was highest in crossbred ducks and almost similar in both Khaki Campbell and Indigenous ducks. The hatchability was higher in eggs stored for 3 days in comparison with that of 7 days pre-incubation holding period. A negative correlation was found between temperature and hatchability as well as humidity and hatchability. The normal ducklings hatched out from the eggs of Khaki Campbell ducks was highest followed by Indigenous and crossbred respectively. There was a negative correlation between temperature and normal ducklings hatched as well as relative humidity and normal ducklings hatched. The preincubation holding temperature and relative humidity had positive correlation with dead-in-shell.

  • One thousand and eighty eggs of Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix Japonica) were set into the incubator maintaining 36 treatment groups (3 egg weight groups ${\times}3$ seasons ${\times}4$ preincubation holding periods) to evaluate their hatchability performances. Holding periods had significant (p<0.05) effect on hatchability and the seasons showed significant (p<0.05) effect on chick weight. All the parameters (except fertility) were significantly (p<0.01) influenced by the egg weight. None of the parameters maintained regular trend with egg weight and pre-incubation holding periods. Significant interactions were not observed on any of the parameters (except fertility) studied. The egg weight maintained significant (p<0.05) negative correlation with fertility and positive correlation with chick weight. Eggs of medium weight (9.10 to 10.00 cm) could be hatched satisfactorily between 4 and 7 days of pre-incubation holding periods in any season of the year.

  • Objective: The present study aimed to investigate the effect of dietary lutein on egg production, follicles, reproductive hormones, fertility, hatchability, and oxidative injury indexes of hens. Methods: Treatments consisted of a control diet (CON) and three lutein-supplementing diets at 25 (L1), 50 (L2), or 75 (L3) mg/kg of diet. Egg production was measured using 576 Arbor Acres breeder hens at 61 to 65 wk and follicles grades, reproductive hormones, fertility, hatchability, tissue lutein contents, and oxidative injury indexes were determined at 65 wk. Results: The results showed that at 65 wk, lutein- supplementing diets increased (p<0.05) egg production, follicular grades, fertility, hatchability, estradiol (E2), luteinizing hormone, progesterone (PROG), lutein content in the serum and yolk, compared to CON. L2 and L3 showed more pronounced (p<0.05) effects on egg production, PROG, and yolk lutein content than L1. With the increase of lutein doses from 25 to 75 mg/kg, there were linear increases (p<0.05) in egg production, lutein content, and PROG, and a quadratic trend (p<0.05) in E2. For the oxidative injury products, lutein-supplementing diets decreased (p<0.05) malondialdehyde (MDA) and protein carbonyl (PCO) in the serum, MDA and 8-hydroxy 2 deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) in the yolk. There were linear decreases (p<0.05) in 8-OHdG in the serum, MDA, PCO, and 8-OHdG in the yolk, a quadratic trend (p<0.05) on serum 8-OHdG. Conclusion: It is concluded that lutein supplementation can improve egg production and fertility by beneficially regulating reproductive hormones and oxidative status in aged hens.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effects of semen on reproductive ability in crossbred Korean native chicken (KNC, 58-wk old). The body weight, volume of semen and concentration of spermatozoa, were 2.96 g, 0.40 ml, $36.58{\times}10^8/ml$, respectively, in KNC. The fertility and hatchability were 94.8% and 78.8% respectively in crossbred KNC. KNC(Y) was high compared to other strains in fertility. The other strains were not significantly different among 6 strains. The results of this experiment indicated that hatchability of (G) was high compared to other strains. The result of this study could be available to genetic improvement of reproductive traits as a basic reference in KNC strains. To achieve the more effective improvement of reproductive traits, addition research such as genetic parameter evaluation should be performed.

  • Fruits with antioxidant enrichment can be an economically affordable supplement for mitigating oxidative damage prone spermatozoa membrane pathologies. Computer-assisted sperm analyzer and oxidative status were utilized to evaluate the impact of watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) fortification of dextrose saline as diluent for rooster semen and fertility response of hens inseminated. Watermelon juice and dextrose saline were used to formulate diluent of 7 treatments consisting of unextended semen (positive control), 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, 50% and only dextrose saline (negative control) designated as Treatments 1-7. Pooled semen was obtained from fertile roosters and equilibrated with diluents at ratio 1:2 in the various treatments and were evaluated using computer software coupled microscope and seminal oxidative status assay. 168 laying hens randomly divided into 7 treatment of 8 replicates and 3 hen per replicate. Hen were everted, and semen (2 × 108 Spermatozoa) deposited intra-vagina and eggs collected over 8 weeks to assess fertility and hatchability of eggs laid. The result obtained revealed that watermelon-dextrose saline rooster semen diluent enhanced progressive motility, sperm kinetics and lowered non-progressive motility in T2-T6 compared to T7 over the 3 hours of evaluation. Watermelon addition to rooster semen diluent enhance the antioxidant capacity of rooster semen and lowered lipid peroxide generation. The percentage fertility was highest in T3 (81.01%) and T4 (81.24%) with lowest value obtained in T7 (73.46%). The hatchability of eggs set of hens inseminated with undiluted semen (71.46%) was lower than values for hens inseminated with watermelon inclusive extended semen (75.71%-80.39%). The optimal inclusion of 30%-40% watermelon in dextrose saline diluent enhance rooster semen kinetics, seminal oxidative stability and egg fertility.
