Effect of ferrule on the fracture resistance of mandibular premolars with prefabricated posts and cores

  • PURPOSE. This study evaluated fracture resistance with regard to ferrule lengths and post reinforcement on endodontically treated mandibular premolars incorporating a prefabricated post and resin core. MATERIALS AND METHODS. One hundred extracted mandibular premolars were randomly divided into 5 groups (n=20): intact teeth (NR); endodontically treated teeth (ETT) without post (NP); ETT restored with a prefabricated post with ferrule lengths of either 0 mm (F0), 1 mm (F1), or 2 mm (F2). Prepared teeth were restored with metal crowns. A thermal cycling test was performed for 1,000 cycles. Loading was applied at an angle of 135 degrees to the axis of the tooth using a universal testing machine with a crosshead speed of 2.54 mm/min. Fracture loads were analyzed by one-way ANOVA and Tukey HSD test using a statistical program (${\alpha}=.05$). RESULTS. There were statistical differences in fracture loads among groups (P<.001). The fracture load of F2 ($237.7{\pm}83.4$) was significantly higher than those of NP ($155.6{\pm}74.3N$), F0 ($98.8{\pm}43.3N$), and F1 ($152.8{\pm}78.5N$) (P=.011, P<.001, and P=.008, respectively). CONCLUSION. Fracture resistance of ETT depends on the length of the ferrule, as shown by the significantly increased fracture resistance in the 2 mm ferrule group (F2) compared to the groups with shorter ferrule lengths (F0, F1) and without post (NP).

Development of Dressing System for Co-axial Grinding Machine of Ferrule (동축 가공기용 드레싱 장치 개발)

  • Using zirconium ceramics makes the ferrule, which is the part of optical communications. The quality of optical communications is directly affected by the concentricity of the optic ferrule. The products of optic ferrule should be meet the following general conditions which are the outer diameter of 2.5mm and the inner diameter of 0.125mm, and high quality conditions which are the concentricity of 0.1~$0.3\mu\textrm{m}$, the form accuracy of $0.2\mu\textrm{m}$, the roundness and the cylindricity of $0.1\mu\textrm{m}$ and the surface roughness of 10nm. Generally, the diamond wheel is used for the high efficiency and precision grinding of the materials. It is good for keeping the shape as it has little wear. Because of the loading phenomena, however, it is difficult to keep the fresh surface of the wheel. In grinding process, grinding fragments resemble fine powders rather than chips. It can easily get attached to the wheel surface and thus cause a loading. The loading takes place, in which the impurities stick to the wheel surface, and the grinding characteristics of wheel is deteriorated. To prevent all of these, a suitable dressing method should be used for the wheel. In this research, the dressing system fur co-axial grinding machine was designed and produced for the machining of ferrule, which is a high performance part. The performance of the developed dressing system was evaluated by measuring the form accuracy of ferrule, which is machined by the dressed wheel in developed dressing system.

  • As the optical communication industry is developed, the demand of optical communication part is increasing. $ZrO_2$ ceramic ferrule is very important part which can determines the transmission efficiency and information quality to connect the optical fibers. In general $ZrO_2$ ceramic ferrule is manufactured by grinding process because the demands precision is very high. And the co-axle grinding process of $ZrO_2$ ceramic ferrule is to make its concentricity all of uniform before centerless grinding. When co-axle grinding of ferrule supported by two pin, pin chucking alignment accuracy is very important. This paper deals with the analysis of the chucking alignment experiment with parallel error on the micro feeding equipment. Thus, if possible be finding highly good the chucking alignment of two pin.

In general ZrO$_2$ ceramic ferrule is manufactured by grinding process because the demands precision is very high. And the co-axle grinding process of ZrO$_2$ ceramic ferrule is to make its concentricity all of uniform before centerless grinding. This paper deals with the analysis of the process parameters such as grinding wheel speed, grinding feedrate and regulating wheel speed as influential factors, on the concentricity and surface finish developed based on Taguchi's experimental design methods. Taguchi s tools such as orthogonal array, signal-to-noise ratio, factor effect analysis, etc. have been used for this purpose optimal condition has been found out. Thus, if possible be finding highly efficient and quality grinding conditions.

  • 광섬유를 이용한 광스위치 연결작업에 있어서 페룰(Ferrule)면의 가공정도는 광커넥터 작업의 성패를 자우하는 매우 중요한 요소이다. 종래의 방법에서는 페룰면을 육안 검사나 현미경을 통한 확대 검사등의 방법을 사용하였고 자동화 검사의 경우도 절대적인 평탄도나 진원도를 나타내는 절대적인 값을 제시하고 있지 못한 단점이 있다. 이를 보완하기 위하여 카메라 입력단에 사각형의 기하 구조를 설치하고 이를 기준으로 영상을 전면에서 본 영상으로 변환하여 페룰면의 가공정도를 나타내주는 변수를 추출하는 새로운 방법을 제안하였다. 또한 실제 구현을 통하여 알고리즘의 강인성을 증명하였다.

  • In this paper, we have designed the Anti-Reflection (AR) coating for 850, 1310 nm(multi type) and 1310, 1550 nm(multi type) wavelength ranges on the ferrule facet of special optical connector. The reflectance of the AR coated ferrule facet is designed under 5% for 850, 1310 nm(multi type) and 1310, 1550 nm (multi type). The average return loss of the AR coated ferrule facet is 47.1 dB.

  • In order to improve the international competitiveness of ferrule industry, the core technology of the second stage for ferrule grinding system is under developing. A high speed (10,000RPM) and high precision spindle system(Radial Runout 0.2 micrometer) bearing more cutting torque and force is designed considering the limitation of cost and size, the effect of heat, and various work-piece materials. A CAE software for machine elements and general machine system is used for preliminary evaluation and selection of design parameters. A dedicated program for the analysis of spindle system is used for final evaluation and selection of design parameter. The process how to evaluate and select using such tools are presented.

  • In this study, the ultra precision centerless grinder for ferrule grinding was designed. As the good-qualified ferrule is required a precise and fine grinding, grinding machine for ferrule must have a high accuracy and a sufficient stiffness. The centerless grinder is composed of the high damping concrete bed, grinding wheel spindle unit, regulating wheel spindle unit, feeding table and dressing unit. For a newly developed centerless grinder, hydrostatic system with high precision feeding and high stiffness was proposed.

  • Today the demand of the optical communication components has been increased. Zirconia Ferrule has become the one of the most important elements because it determines transmission efficiency and quality of information in the optical communication system. Grinding is the major process in the ferrule manufacturing process which require high processing precision. In this reseach, specially designed spindle, chucking system, loading & unloading system and cooling system, as a supporting experimental equipment for development of an Intelligent Coaxial Grinding System (ICGS) for Zirconia Ferrule processing, is developed. We are also analized the adaptability of ICGS in practical use, through the way of evaluation for the performance of the each systems above.
