The effects of Cr content and film formation potential on electronic behaviors of the passive film on Fe-Cr alloys were investigated in borate buffer solution. Influence of pH on passive films of both Fe-Cr and Fe-Cr-Mo alloys was also investigated. Mott-Schottky and cyclic voltammetry techniques were used to elucidate electronic behaviors of passive films and their electrochemical characteristics. AES analysis of passive films was carried out. Results showed that doping density decreased as Cr content and film formation potentials increased. The addition of Mo to Fe-Cr alloy had little influence on donor densities in pH 9.2 solution but some effects on the decrease in donor densities in pH 1.6 acidic solution.
The effects of grain size on the corrosion resistance of 429EM ferritic stainless steels for automobile exhaust system were investigated. Using specimens held at maximum service temperature of $950^{\circ}C$ for 10~70 hours, electrochemical polarization tests were conducted. While corrosion current density, $I_{corr}$, was influenced little by grain size, pitting potential, $E_p$, was increased with an increase of grain size. Sensitizaton at grain boundary occurred when the specimen were held at $950^{\circ}C$ for above 50 hours because of the dissolution of precipitates and grain coarsening.

The deformation behavior of commercial stainless steels under hot rolling conditions was investigated by means of hot compression tests performed in the temperature range 800$^{\circ}C$ to 1200$^{\circ}C$. The measured flow stress-strain curves were analyzed by using a simple flow stress model. It was found that the reference strength of stainless steels are much higher than that of carbon steel and that nitrogen and molybdenum alloying greatly increases flow stress of austenitic stainless steel. Ferritic and duplex stainless steel showed comparatively low flow stresses. The flow stress model, which correlates the flow stress with temperature and strain rate, was applied to predict roll forces during hot-plate rolling of stainless steels.
Weldability of high Cr ferritic steel for $620^{\circ}C$ grade turbin casing were investigated. The effect of carbon content on the cold and hot cracking susceptibility and HAZ softening was determined. The cast steel with higher carbon content showed higher HAZ hardness because of the dissolution of cabonitrides during welding thermal cycle. Moreover, it showed higher solidification cracking sensitivity because of the little S-ferrite formation in weld metal. Both steels showed HAZ softening at $900^{\circ}C$ peak temperature after PWHT.

In order to obtain the optimal estimation method of fracture toughness of dual phase steel in which martensitic phase encapsulated islands of ferritic phase, the stretched zone (SZ) method and the R-curve method of the JSME S 001 was discussed. The results obtained are as follows. (1) The $J_{IC}$ values estimated by the SZ method are overestimated as compared with those by the R-curve method. (2) The $J_{IC}$ by the R-curve method decreases with the increase of the ferrite grain size and the martensite hardness. (3) The overestimation of $J_{IC}$ by the SZ method is due to the continuous plastic blunting of ferrite after the formation of stable crack which affects the critical stretched zone width.

Wear test has been performed to evaluate the wear mechanism of Inconel alloys against ferritic stainless steels in room temperature water. By means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the worn surface and microstructure of subsurface layer have been examined. The wear at steady state conditions result in the formation of 5∼7${\mu}$m thick layers with fragmented microstructure. The thickness of these layers seems to depend on the ability of work hardening and deformation accommodation at the contact areas during wear. Therefore, in room temperature water, the wear rate is closely related with the wear resistance of these fragment microstructure which are generated after severe subsurface deformation.
Fracture mechanics evaluation of stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in the dissimilar metal weld (DMW) for the nuclear piping system is performed; simulating the transition joint of the ferritic nozzle to austenitic safe-end fabricated with the Inconel Alloy A82/182 buttering and welds. Residual stresses in the DMW are computed by the finite element (FE) analyses Then, to investigate the SCC in the weld root under the combined residual and system operation stresses, the fracture mechanics parameters for a semi-elliptical surface crack are evaluated using the finite element alternating method (FEAM). As a result, it is found that the effect of weld residual stresses on the crack-driving forces is dominant, as high as three times or more than the operation stresses.

The long-term aging of ferritic 2.25CrMo steel was characterized using the acoustic nonlinear effect in order to apply to diagnose the degradation behavior of structural materials. We measured the acoustic nonlinearity parameter for each thermally aged specimen by the higher harmonic-generation technique. The acoustic nonlinearity parameter increased with aging time due to equilibrium M6C carbide precipitation, and has a favorable linear relation with Rockwell hardness. This study suggests that acoustic nonlinearity testing may be applicable to diagnostics on strength degradation in rotor steels.
This study has been carried out to the low temperature plasma nitriding treatment on the mechanical properties of stainless steel at temperature range between $400^{\circ}C$ and $500^{\circ}C$. It was found that there was precipitated to free CrN matrix below $400^{\circ}C$ and there was precipitated S-phase of STS 316L, ${\varepsilon}$-phase of STS 409L and ${\alpha}N$-phase of STS 420J2. STS 316L has formed relatively abundant CrN phase and ${\gamma}^{\prime}-Fe_4N$ phase at $500^{\circ}C$, alternatively STS 409L and STS 420J2 were more deeply nitrided than STS 316L at $500^{\circ}C$.
Plasma nitriding of stainless steels has been investigated over a range of temperature from 400 to $500^{\circ}C$ and time from 10 to 20 hours. Characterization of systematic materials was carried out in terms of mechanical properties and corrosion behaviors. The results showed that plasma nitriding conducted at low temperatures not only increased the surface hardness, but also improved the corrosion resistance of STS 316L, STS409L, and STS 420J2. It was found that plasma-nitriding treatment at $500^{\circ}C$ resulted in increasing the corrosion performance of STS 409L and STS 420J2, while STS 316L was observed with server and massive damage on surface due to the formation of CrN.
