  • The thin films of 316L stainless steel were made on glass and S45C substrate by Ion beam assisted deposition with reactive atmosphere of argon and nitrogen. The films were deposited at the various conditions of ion beam power and the ratios of Ar/$N_2$gas. Properties of these films were analyzed by glancing x-ray diffraction method(GXRD), AES, potentiodynamic test, and salt spray test. The results of GXRD showed that austenite phase could be appeared by $N_2$ion beam treatment and the amount of austenite phase increased with the amount of nitrogen gas. The films without plasma ion source treatment had the weak diffraction peak of ferrite phase. But under the Ar plasma ion beam treatment, the strong diffraction peaks of ferrite phase were appeared and the grain size was increased from 12 to 16 nm. Potentiodynamic polarization test and salt spray test indicated that the corrosion properties of the STS 316L films with nitrogen ion source treatment were better than bulk STS 316L steel and STS 316L films with Ar ion source treatment.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of postweld heat treatment(PWHT, 930, 1080, $1230^{\circ}C$) on the microstructure, phase formation, pitting corrosion and mechanical properties such as hardness, tensile strength and impact values of super duplex stainless steel(UNS S32750) multipass welds. Based on the microstructural examination and X-ray diffraction analysis, it was found that the ${\sigma}$ phase was formed in the welds heat treated at $930^{\circ}C$ in which the ferrite content greatly decreased into 5~10% in the welds. The secondary austenite was formed in the reheated zone of welds and redissolved into ferrite with increasing heat treatment temperatures. The tensile strength and impact values of welds heat treated at $930^{\circ}C$ were the lowest and revealed the brittle fracture surface. The weight loss by pitting corrosion increased with test temperatures. It was confirmed that pitting corrosion occurred mainly in secondary austenite of reheated zones. The postweld heat treatment temperature is recommended to be in the range of $1050{\sim}1150^{\circ}C$.

  • This study examined the influence of post weld heat treatment (PWHT) conditions on corrosion behaviors of laser-welded super duplex stainless steel tube. Due to the high cooling rate of laser welding, the phase fraction of ferrite and austenite in the weld metal became unbalanced significantly. In addition, the Cr2N particles were precipitated adjacent to the fusion line, which can be susceptible to the localized corrosion. On the other hand, the phase fraction in the weld metal was restored at a ratio of 5:5 when exposed to temperatures above 1060 ℃ during the post weld heat treatment. Nevertheless, the high beltline speed during the PWHT, leading to the insufficient cooling rate, caused a precipitation of σ phase at the interface between ferrite/austenite in both weld metal and base metal. This resulted in the severe corrosion damages and significant decrease in critical pitting temperature (CPT), which was even lower than that measured in as-welded condition. Moreover, the fraction of σ phase in the center region of post weld heat treated steel tube was obtained to be higher than in the surface region. These results suggest that the PWHT conditions for the steel tube should be optimized to ensure the high corrosion resistance by excluding the precipitation of σ phase even in center region.

  • Corrosion and mechanical behavior of the hot-rolled 0.5%Gd-0.8%B-stainless steel to develop a spent nuclear fuel storage material was studied in a simulated nuclear waste treatment condition with rolling condition. The austenite and ferrite phases of the 0.5%Gd-0.8%B-stainless steels are about 88:12. The average austenite and ferrite grain size of the plane normal to rolling, transverse and normal directions of the hot rolled specimens are about 5.08, 8.94, 19.35, 23.29, 26.00 and 18.11 [${\mu}m$], respectively. The average micro-hardness of the as-cast specimen is 200.4 Hv, whereas, that of the hot-rolled specimen are 220.1, 204.7 and 203.5 [$H_v$] for the plane normal to RD, TD and ND, respectively. The UTS, YS and elongation of the as-cast and the hot-rolled specimen are 699, 484 [MPa], 34.0%, and 654, 432 [MPa] and 33.3%, respectively. The passivity was observed both for the as-cast and the hot rolled specimens in a simulated nuclear waste solution. The corrosion potential and corrosion rate of the as-casted specimens are $-343[mV_{SHE}]$ and $3.26{\times}10^{-7}[A/cm^2]$, whereas, those of the hot rolled specimens with normal to ND, RD and TD are -630, -512 and -620 [$mV_{SHE}$] and $6.12{\times}10^{-7}$, $1.04{\times}10^{-6}$ and $6.92{\times}10^{-7}[A/cm^2]$, respectively. Corrosion tends to occur preferentially Cr and B rich area.

  • This study investigated changes in phase fraction caused by the addition of Mo, as well as the subsequent behaviour of N and its effect on the mechanical properties of welded 24Cr-N duplex stainless steel weld metals. Filler metal was produced by fixing the contents of Cr, Ni, N, and Mn while adjusting the Mo content to 1.4, 2.5, 3.5 wt%. The delta ferrite fraction increased as the Mo content increased. In contrast, the ${\gamma}$ fraction decreased and changed from a round to an acicular shape. Secondary austenite (${\gamma}^{\prime}$) was observed in all specimens in a refined form, but it decreased as the Mo content increased to the extent that it was nearly impossible to find any secondary austenite at 3.5 wt% Mo. Both tensile and yield strengths increased with the addition of Mo. In contrast, the highest value of ductility was observed at 1.41 wt% Mo. At all temperatures, impact energy absorption showed the lowest value at 3.5 wt% Mo, at which the amount of ${\delta}$-ferrite was greatest. There was no significant temperature dependence of the impact energy absorption values for any of the specimens. As the fraction of ${\gamma}$ phase decreased, the amount of N stacked in the ${\gamma}$ phase increased. Consequently, the stacking fault energy decreased, while the hardness of ${\gamma}$ increased.

  • The microstructures of variously heat treated hypoeutectoid($0.45\%$ carbon) and eutectoid($0.85\%$ carbon) steel were characterized by magnetic coercivity measurement. The effect of spheroidization of cementites on the coercivity was investigated for $0.45\%$ carbon steel. In case of $0.85\%$ carbon steel, microstructural parameters such as prior austenite grain size, phase and pearlite interlamellar spacing were measured along with coercivity to investigate the relationships between them. Prior austenite grain size had little effect on the measured coercivity. Coercivity was observed to be high in order of martensite, pearlite and ferrite phases. The linear decrease of coercivity with increasing pearlite interlamellar spacing was found. The effect of each microstructural factor on the coercivity and the potential of coercivity as a nondestructive evaluation parameter for assessing microstructures of steel products are discussed.

  • It has been widely reported that carbide-free bainitic steels or super-bainite WP (SB-TRIP) steels for the automotive industry are a new family of steels offering a unique combination of high strength and ductility. Hence, it is important to exactly evaluate the volume fraction of RA and to identify the 3-D morphology of constituent phases, because it plays a crucial role in mechanical properties. Recently, as electron back-scattered diffraction (EBSD) equipped with focused ion beam (FIB) has been developed, 3-D EBSD technique for materials science are used to these steels. Moreover, newly developed atom probe tomography (APT) technique can provide the exact distribution and chemical concentration of alloying elements in a sub-nm scale. The APT analysis results indicate exactly the distribution and composition of alloying elements in the austenite and bainite phases of SB-TRIP steels with the atomic-scale resolution. And thus, no partitioning of aluminum and manganese atoms was showed between the austenite containing $7.73{\pm}0.39$ at% C and the bainitic ferrite associated with $0.22{\pm}0.06$ at% C in the SB-TRIP steel.

  • The effects of TRansformation Induced Plasticity(TRIP) phenomena on the plastic deformation of 0.2C-1.5Si-1.5Mn multiphase steels have been investigated at various heat treatment and stress conditions. In order to estimate the formability, the hole expansion(HE) tests and the tensile tests were carried out. The formability evaluated from the uni-axial tensile tests was quite different from the formability measured from multi-axial HE-tests. Consequently, the formability in the multi-axial stress state decreased due to the extinction of the retained austenite relatively at earlier deformation stage and the production of irregular α' martensite. However, the defects of TRIP-steels were initiated exactly at the boundary between transformed martensite and ferrite matrix regardless of stress state. In addition, new experimental formula is proposed in order to predict the multi-axial formability of the TRIP steels from the results of uniaxial tensile test.

  • A study was made to examine the effects of heat-treatment on the microstructures of Cu-bearing HSLA steels. The details of microstructures were studied by using optical microscopy(OM), transmission electron microscopy(TEM) and hardness test. The as-rolled microstructure of HSLA-A consists of ferrite (${\alpha}$) whereas that of HSLA-B consists of needle-shaped phase. The difference in microstructure can be ascribed to the different amount of Ni, Mn, Mo, Cu which affect the hardenability. The austenite grain size is very small up to $1000^{\circ}C$ owing to the Nb-precipitates. As the austenitizing temperature increases above $1000^{\circ}C$, the austenite grain grows rapidly. There are two hardness peaks in the hardness versus temperature curve, at $500^{\circ}C$ and at $675^{\circ}C$ (HSLA-A), $725^{\circ}C$ (HSLA-B). The peak at $500^{\circ}C$ result from the formation of Cu-precipitates and second hardness peak is created due to the formation of M-A constituents. The hardriess decrease in HSLA-B steel with ageing temperature is small because of the higher amounts of Cu than HSLA-A steel. The fine, round ${\varepsilon}$-Cu precipitates grow with ageing temperature and finally transform into rod shape.
