Objectives: The aim of this study was to examine the current status of consumption of energy drinks among college students and investigate the effects of general environmental factors, health behavior factors, caffeine knowledge levels, and perceived stress levels on consumption of energy drinks. Methods: A survey was conducted among a total of 479 college students in Gwangju, using self-administered questionnaires. The questionnaire consisted of items about general environmental factors, health behavior, caffeine knowledge, perceived stress, and energy drink consumption behaviors. Results: 69.1% of participants experienced consumption of energy drinks, and specifically 82.8% of male students and 54.1% of female students experienced consumption of energy drinks (p<0.001). The reasons for drinking energy drinks were found to be recovery from fatigue, curiosity, taste, habit, thirst relief, and stress relief. In addition, 40.7% of participants experienced drinking energy drinks mixed with alcohol, and specifically 48.6% of male students and 27.4% of female students reported drinking energy drinks with alcohol (p<0.001). Moreover, 51.5% of participants responded that they experienced the effects of energy drinks, 31.9% reported experiencing adverse effects, and 41.1% were found to perceive the health risks. As a result of the assessment of caffeine knowledge, the participants showed a high level of knowledge of the arousal effect (77.7%) and the concentration increasing effect (70.8%) of caffeine, whereas they exhibited a low level of understanding of the health problems due to caffeine (32.6%) and adequate caffeine intake levels (24.4%). The higher levels of consumption experience of energy drinks was associated with higher body mass indexes (BMI) (p<0.01), higher academic years (p<0.01), lower levels of interest in health (p<0.05), smoking (p<0.001), alcohol consumption (p<0.05), and higher levels of perceived stress (p<0.05). Conclusions: The risk groups related to consumption of energy drinks among college students were identified as male students rather than female students, students in the third or fourth year of study associated with increased stress levels, and students with negative health behaviors. Therefore, support for diverse health and nutrition education for college students is required along with the improvement of internal and external environments of schools in order for college students to manage increased stress levels due to the schoolwork and preparation for employment and maintain positive health behaviors.

The purpose of this study was to compare the health behaviors, mental health and internet addiction by gender differences among Korean adolescents and to examine relevances between health behaviors, mental health and internet addiction. The subjects were 73,238 Korean adolescents(male: 38,391, female: 34,847) who were recruited through national web-based survey. The data were derived from the Sixth Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey 2010 in South Korea. There were significant differences in health behaviors, mental health and internet addiction. by gender differences. Prevalence of internet addiction was male: 3.9%, female: 1.9% in this study. As the result of multiple logistic regression, the risk of internet addiction was increased in the case of smoking experience, substance experience, subjective health status, feeling of stress, depression experience, suicidal ideation, feeling of happiness, and sufficiency of sleeps in both male and female. Therefore, to decrease internet addiction prevalence, it is necessary to detect and manage the influencing risk factors of internet addiction such as health behaviors and mental health. And the health-promotion intervention to improve the internet addiction of adolescents should be planed and provided considering such differences by gender differences.

The purpose of this study was attempted to analyze the relationship between drug abuse and the other problem behavior Patterns among high school students in Cheju. In order to achieve these set-goals, questionaires were finally supplied to the total 379 case of 9 high school from October to December, 1990. The collected data were processed using the SPSS-X computer program and statistically analyzed by the Chi-square method and. percentage. Results of the study were as follows: Among the 370 adolescents, 32.4% of students experienced cigarette smoking in their life, adolescents who experienced alcohol drinking were 46.8%, 0.5% of the students ever used marihuana; cocaine 0.3%, stimulant 3.2%, hallucinogen and inhalants 0.5%, tranquilizer 1.4%, analgesics 31:6%, antitussives 6.5%, antihistamines 1.9%. And all students never experienced the amphetamines and narcotics. The rates of drug use except stimulant and antitussive were higher in the male than in the female students. For the analysis of personal identifying datum, the rates of experienced smokers increased among groups of buddhist and the rates of experienced alconoi drinking increased among groups of no religion. Drug abuser increased among the group lower socio-economic status student, the adolescents whose parents have traditional education point of view. And it was also higher in those who were living only one than in those who were living together. Most students tended to use drugs after 17 or 18 years old. Drug users were more inclined to commit other problem behaviors when compared non-drug users. In the conclusion of the above results, it will be necessary to investigate the drug problem of adolescent. Drug abuse of students must be seen in an environmental context including family, school, peer group and society and not solely as the characteristics of an individual adolescent. And their parents and teachers must be on the alert for the behavior changes of their children such as changes of school performance, neglecting homework, tardiness or truancy from school, runaway from home, and mingled with bad companions, etc. We must recognize that drug abuse is frequently symptomatic of problems in the adolescent's environment.

This study was to performed to assess social factors and physical health status. The subjects of the study were 103 elderly people of age over 85 years living in Ganghwa-gun area. The method of this research was based on the interview-survey with questionnaire. Chi-square test was the main data analysis method. The subject group was composed of 36 males and 67 females, the average age being 91.0 $\pm$ 3.2 years old for the males and 91.1 $\pm$ 3.4 years old for the females. The aged average height and weight were 161.0 $\pm$ 7.9 cm and 54.6 $\pm$ 7.8 kg in males, 141.0 $\pm$ 8.2 cm and 42.2 $\pm$ 7.9 kg in females which were lower than the Korean average standard but the mean BMIs of both male and female showed normal range. Their level of education was lower and they tended to be religious. The aged population might be economically poor. Their level of living standards tended to have been lower-middle and lower class. The mean age of their parents' death were 64.3 $\pm$ 17.2 years in males, 59.0 $\pm$ 14.9 years in females for the father and 70.9 $\pm$ 15.5 years in males, 66.8 $\pm$ 16.6 years in females for the mother. The rate of living together with their family or spouse in the female aged was $83.2\%$ higher than in the male aged. They tended to have engaged in hobbies that require less movement. Of the kinds of hobby, 'TV watching ($47.8\%$ in male and $44.9\%$ in female) was the highest. Ratios of the drinking and the smoking elderly were $30.6\%$, $25.0\%$ in male and $7.5\%$, $18.8\%$ in female but they tended to have never drunken and smoked. Of the subjects, $42.9\%$ spend 8$\~$9 hours for sleeping in male and $35.8\%$ spend 10 hours for sleeping in female. They tended to have not done any particular health behavior. This study was done to investigate and compare the nutritional status and plasma lipids in the diabetes and control elderly. Subjects were 105 persons (male 32, female 73) aged over 65 years and visited public health centers in Ulsan area. The subjects were divided into 2 groups, diabetes and control group. Athropometric measurement, dietary intakes, and plasma biochemical indices were examined. Body Mass Index (BMI), Percentage of Ideal Body Weight (PIBW) and Waist-Hip Ratio (WHR) of diabetes group were higher than those of control group. Overall eating behavior were worse in diabetes group than those of control group. There was no significant difference in smoking and exercise status among groups. The ratio of drinkers was significantly higher in control group. But the amount of alcohol consumed at once was higher in the diabetes group. There was no significant difference in most nutrient intakes between males and females. The intakes of fiber, natrium (Na), vitamin A, and $\beta$-carotene were significantly higher in diabetes group than control groups while that of potassium (K) was lower in diabetes group. Diabetes group had the higher levels in triglyceride, VLDL-cholesterol, Chol/HDL-cholesterol ratio, LDL/HDL-cholesterol ratio, while they had lower HDL-cholesterol level. Overall results might imply that the elderly with diabetes have to be more careful to their meals and health-related behaviors to increase the likelihood of a healthier life.
This study shows trends and age-sex patterns of mortality in Korea, based on adjusted death registration data during 1956∼1980. Description on the data-the types of errors and their methods of adjustment-are presented elsewhere (Kim, 1986). Crude death rates have declined in 20 years to 7.0 in 1976∼1980, almost half the level of 13.0 in 1956∼1960. Mortality of females declined faster than males, especially at older ages. Substantial differences in provincial mortality are observed based on the expectation of life at birth. The difference between the highest and the lowest provinces is 9.2 years for males and 8.3 years for females during 1976∼1980. This study presents two interesting features of age-sex patterns of mortality in Korea. One feature is higher female mortality than males during childhood periods. However, infant mortality is higher for males than for females throughout the period, though the difference is much smaller than is expected from various model life tables. Another feature is the rapid rise in mortality for males after age 40. This pattern is found to be existed throughout the period 1956∼1980. Further studies are recommended to establish its causal linkage to traditional sex role (as main bread winner) and health behavior (smoking and drinking) of males and recent rapid industrialization in Korea.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to examine the periodontal health indexes of some college students and awareness of periodontal health by conducting a survey and complete blood count(CBC) to evaluate periodontal health status. Methods : The study subjects were 133 college students. After receiving informed consent, the health-related majoring students voluntarily participated in this study from May 1 to 30, 2012. This study compared the individual, family, environmental factors, and subjective sleep sufficiency according to gender among Korean adolescents and to examine relevance among the individual, family, environmental factors, and subjective sleep sufficiency. The subjects were 65,528 Korean adolescents(male: 33,803, female: 31,725), who were derived from the 12th Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey 2016 in South Korea. As a result, the prevalence of the subjective sleep sufficiency in this study was 33.4% male and 19.5% female. The subjective sleep sufficiency was affected by the depression experience, suicidal ideation, school achievement, feeling of stress, feeling of happiness, subjective health status, alcohol experience, smoking experience, substance experience, allergic rhinitis, and atopic dermatitis in individual factors; economic status, educational level of parents and living arrangement in family factors; school grade, school type and emotional support in environmental factors in both males and females. In individual factors, breakfast eating and asthma affected the male's subjective sleep sufficiency and physical activity affected the female's. The mental health of the individual factors was the most influential factor in adolescent's subjective sleep sufficiency. Therefore, nursing intervention to improve Korean adolescent's subjective sleep sufficiency should be applied considering gender differences.
