  • We investigated the optimum salinity and temperature conditions for the mass culture of small rotifer, Keratella sp.. In the salinity experiment ranging from 0-34‰, the population growth of Keratella sp. drastically increased continuously up to 15‰, and then slightly increased over 20‰. Their maximum density reached 1,007 inds./mL at 0‰. A pre-reproductive phase was shorter in low salinity than in high salinity. The highest number of offspring per female (10.2 inds.) and lifespan of the female (10.7 days) were obtained at 0‰, but there were no significant differences compared to those at 5‰. In the temperature experiments ranging from 16-$32^{\circ}C$, the highest maximum density (1,766 inds./mL) was shown at $24^{\circ}C$. The number of offspring per female significantly increased with increasing temperature, and the highest number of offspring per female was 10.4 inds. at $24^{\circ}C$. The lifespan of female increased with decreasing temperature and the longest lifespan was 12.8 days at $16^{\circ}C$.

  • Background : Most previous studies regarding the role of GSTMl and GSTT1 on lung cancer risk have been focused mainly on male smokers. However, epidemiological characteristics, histologic types and risk factors are different in female and male lung cancers, we investigated the association between these genotypes and lung cancer risk in males and females separately. Materials and Methods : The study population consisted of 253 lung cancer (153 males and 100 females) and 243 controls (140 males and 103 females). GSTM1 and GSTT1 genotypes were determined by a multiplex PCR. Results : In the male population, neither GSTM1 nor GSTT1 null genotype showed significant difference between cases and controls. In the female population, the frequencies of GSTM1 null genotype showed no significant difference between cases and controls. However, the frequencies of GSTT1 null genotype was significantly higher in cases (70.3%) than controls (55.3%, odds ratio (OR)=2.18; 95% confidence interval (CI=l.21-3.93). When the female population was stratified by age and smoking status, the ORs for GSTT1 null genotype were significantly higher in subgroups of ${\leq}60$ years (OR=4.82; 95% CI=l.61-14.4) and never-smokers (OR=4.29; 95% CI=1.94-9.48) but not in subgroups of >60 years or smokers. When stratifying the female never-smokers by age, the ORs for GSTT1 null genotype were significantly higher in both age groups of ${\leq}60$ years (OR=7.64; 95% CI=2.00-29.2) and >60 years (OR=2.89; 95% CI=1.05-7.94). Conclusion : We found that GSTT1 null genotype was associated with an increased risk of lung cancer in Korean female never-smokers. This result suggests that GSTT1 null genotype could be used as a biomarker for genetic susceptibility to lung cancer in Korean female never-smokers.

  • The purposes of this paper is to introduce a technique for construction of nuptiality tables using proportion single of synthetic cohorts between times at two consecutive censuses, and to observe patterns of change in marriage habit of Korean through the nuptiality tables for single population from 1925 to 1980. In this paper abridged gross and net nuptiality tables for single population of Korea have been constructed for the four quinquinial period: 1925-1930, 1955-1960, 1970-1975, and 1975-1980. Significant time trend has been observed in the nuptiality rates among the single population. The major findings observed in each table are as follows; (1)During 1925-1930, the rates are initially small, but increase rapidly until they reach a maximum at ages 25-29 for bachelors and 20-24 for spinsters, following which they are still in high level. (2)During 1955-1960, the age pattern of nuptiality begins to change; for female population, the rates increase rapidly in the same pattern as in l925-l930 untill they reach the highest level at ages 25-29, after which they gradually decline. During the period, however, there were an unprecedented high level of marriage rates for male population at a relatively later ages. (3)During 1970-1975, Korea had experienced a transition in marriage habits; at this times, nuptiality rates for both sexes showed the same pyramid shaped patterns as in western countries as age increases. The mean ages at marriage for both sexes also reached the highest level of 27.5 years for males and 24.1 years for females. (4)During 1975-1980, the age patterns of nuptiality showed almost the same patterns as in 1970-1975. In the later age group, however, age-specific marriage rates for both sexes greatly declined compared to the level of 1970-1975, while the rate in age group of 20-24 for male population greatly increased.

  • Extracted mushroom water showed an ability to suppress the accumulation of body fat in female mice after feeding 5 weeks with high fat diet. Particularly, in parametrial and mesenteric adipose, it significantly reduced 44 and 47% of weight, respectively. In non-obese mice, maturated NK cell ($CD11b^{hi}CD27^{lo}$) population were increased ($70.9{\pm}3.8%$) in mushroom water fed mice compared to control ($61.4{\pm}4.3%$) and NK cell population were augmented in mushroom fed mice compared to control.
