  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of the feeding mixture of linesed oil, rich in n-3 PUFA and the sunflower seed oil, rich in n-6 PUFA on the lipid metabolism in the dietary hypprlidemic rats. After male Sprague-Dawley rats were induced hyperlipidemia by feeding the diet containing lard, butter, and cholesterol for 3 weeks, then they were fed with the diet containing lard 3.0% and butter 12.0% for control, the mixture in different proportion of both linseed oil and sunflower seed oil, and antihyperlipidemic durgs for 2 weeks. Analysis of the lipid component and the fatty acid composition of the liver showed following results. Concentration s of the total cholesterol and phospholipid in liver were significantly higher in group 2 (olive oil 12.0%) and lower in the other groups than in the control group, especially lower in groups 3 (cholestyramine 2.0%) and 9 (sunflower seed oil 12.0%) . Concentration of triglyceride was lower in the other groups except group 4 (liparoid), especially lowe rin group 9 than in the control group. In the fatty acid composition of liver lipids, C18:2 was the major fatty acid. Contents of n-6 PUFA increased , while those of n-3 PUFA decreased in groups composition of the test lipids. From the data on concentration s of total cholesterol. Phospholipid and triglyceride in liver, we concluded that the feeding mixed with 3.0% lard and 12.0 % sunflower seed oil were most effective for the improvement of the live lipids. The fatty acid composition in liver lipids were affected by the fatty acid composition of the test lipids.

  • This study was to investigate the nutrient intake of infants according to the 3 feeding groups which are as follows : breast-feeding(BF), formula-feeding(FF), mixed-feeding(MF) infants. Intake was compared between these 3 groups and present Korean RDA at 2month of age. The energy and the nutrient intake in the FF infants were significantly higher than in the BF infants and MF infants(p<0.05). Unfortunately, the energy and nutrient intake in all groups still do not meet RDA, excluding iron intake in FF infants. It might be suggested that follow-up study is needed to inspect whether the significant lower intakes of energy and nutrients in BF infants than in FF infants can bring about some significant effects on the growth of the infants.

  • Organized feeding programmes can contribute to the health and well-being of students All such programme must be planned carefully, taking into account the nutritional needs of the group to be fed, available food supplies, facilities for food preparation and distribution, and available funds. In most instances provision must be made for training staff to operate large-scale feeding proframmes. Nutrition education should be an important aspect of all feeding programme, and should provide simple clear information on food and nutrition in relation to health. The early participation of parents and the local community in the programme, particularly through the production of local low-cost foods of high nutritional value will help to insure continuity after external aid has ceased. Programmes should be evaluated in order to measure the benefits obtained in relation to the cost of the operation. Anthropometric data, absenteeism and scholastic achievement may serve as indicators in school feeding programmes.

  • Animal welfare advocates, claim that the induced molting by fasting be avoided. This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of molting induced by various feeding methods on productivity and egg quality in laying hens. We used 400 flocks of 60-week-old leghorn laying hens in four treatments(five replicates of 20 hens each): fasting method (C), feeding single corn grain diet (T1), feeding single wheat bran diet (T2) and feeding single alfalfa meal diet (T3). As the result of the experiment, egg production and daily egg mass significantly decreased only in T1 compared with the control during the $1{\sim}4th$ week after the secondary egg laying (P<0.05). Although the amount of feed intake was significantly less in T1 group during the $1{\sim}4th$ week compared to the control, no significant difference was detected during the total period (P>0.05). In addition, no significant difference of feed conversion was observed between treatment groups. In terms of egg quality, the egg shell thickness was significantly improved in T1 group than the control group by feeding only corn at the 10th and 14th week after the secondary egg laying (P<0.05), but the significant decrease was observed at the corn (T1) and wheat bran (T2) fed treatment groups than the control group at the 26th week of the experiment (P<0.05). The eggshell strength and haugh unit did not show any difference by the molting methods. Egg yolk color was significantly decreased in T1 and T2 group than the control group at the 6th week (P<0.05). However, T1 and T2 group resulted to show significantly high egg yolk color at the 18th week of the experiment (P<0.05). As the result of the experiment, no large difference was observed in the productivity by the feeding molting method and by the fasting induced molting method. In addition, the single diet fed feeding induced molting method by using alfalfa revealed to show more satisfactory trend than the corn or wheat bran single diet fed feeding induced molting methods even if no statistically significant difference was found in terms of egg productivity.

  • Thirty-six (20 wethers and 16 rams) adult Gansu highland finewool sheep with an average liveweight of $19.42{\pm}1.83kg$ were used. The sheep were allocated to 4 treatments and confined in individual feeding stalls. The 80 day feeding trial was divided into 2 periods of 38 and 42 days. The sheep had access to clean water and were fed chopped wheat straw ad libitum. Daily supplemented diets of 150 g for the first period and 200 g for the later period were provided. The 4 types of supplements were: Wheat bran type (I), which is the traditional feeding practice in the area and the control group; Linseed cake type (II); Linseed cake+poultry litter type (III); Poultry litter+distiller grains type (IV). The digestibility trial was conducted using a total collection method at the end of the first period in the feeding trial. The results showed that the digestibilities of DM, OM, CP, CF, NDF and ADF in group II and III were increased to more than 50%. CP and NDF digestibility in group II were significantly increased by 23.6% and 25.5% respectively over group I (p<0.01) and by 10.1% and 13.1% respectively over group III (p<0.05). The digestibility of DM, OM, CP, CF, NDF and ADF in group IV was lower than group I by 4.4 to 8.4% (p>0.05). Compared to group I, group II and III increased straw intake by 17.6% (p<0.01) and 10.8% (p<0.05). The ADG increased from 16.2 g in group I to 45.3 g and 32.8 g (p<0.01) in group II and III respectively. The ratio of supplement intake to gain decreased from 10.7 in group I to 3.9 and 5.4 (p<0.01) in group II and III respectively. The ratio of supplement cost to gain also decreased by 60.0% and 64.3%, respectively. The wool growth rate and wool strength in these 2 groups were noticeably improved. This significantly enhanced the wool's textile value. The above parameters in group IV were lower than in group I, except the ratio of supplement cost to gain. This research indicates that local low quality nitrogen resources could be used effectively and economically to improve the utilization of wheat straw fed to sheep on smallholder farms under harsh loess plateau conditions in the winter.

  • The overall purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of level of isoflavones supplementation on bone metabolism in osteoporosis rats. The effects of level of isoflavones supplementation on calcium and osteocalcin blood level, femur/body weight, bone mineral density(BMD) and bone strength were inspected in this study. This study classified 28 of 12 weeks-old male Sprague Dawley rats which have osteoporosis caused by ovariectomy into four groups of 7 rats and made the subjects medicated them isoflavone. Group I was non-treatment after osteoporosis(control); Group II was low-dose isoflavone(20 mg/kg) feeding after osteoporosis; Group III was middle-dose isoflavone(40 mg/kg) feeding after osteoporosis; Group IV was high-dose isoflavone(80 mg/kg) feeding after osteoporosis; In the calcium and osteocalcin level as one of bone formation indexes, there was a statistically significant difference between the group II, III, IV compared to group I. In respect to the femur/body weight, there was a statistically significant difference between the group II, III, IV compared to group I. In the bone mineral density and bone strength test, there was a statistically significant difference between the group II, III, IV compared to group I. The above results suggests that isoflavone medicated is effective to prevention and treatment of osteoporosis.

  • The solids(supplementary food) consumption of 200 healthy infants aged from 4 to 6 months have been measured. Five groups were assigned to different feeding patterns. Breastfed group(BF, n=38), formula-fed group(FF, n=102) and mixed-fed group(MF, n=14) were fed breast milk, formula and mixed(breast mile+formula) from birth until 6 months of age respectively. Convert 1 group(C1F, n=14) and convert 2 group(C2F, n=32) were fed breast milk and mixed milk at 2 months of age respectively and were switched to formula thereafter. All infants received solids form 4 months of age. The energy intake from solids at 4 and 6 months averaged 59.1 and 110.3㎉/d among BF groups vs 151.9 and 239.3㎉/d among FF groups respectively. Intakes of protein, calcium and iron were 38-46$\%$, 34-44% and 25-37$\%$ higher in the FF than in the Bf group during the first 6 months. However, no significant differences were found in the intakes of energy and nutrient intakes from solids in all 4 groups excluding BF group(39$\%$). Although BF infant's nutrient intakes from solids were lower than other group's intakes, they intaked evenly solids from various food groups. As the age of infant had increased, the energy intake ratio from solids was cereals and dairy products was increased whereas energy intake ratio from meats, eggs, fruits and vegetables was decreased. TSC4, TSC6(the frequency score for the kinds of weaning food taken) showed no significant difference among 5 feeding groups but CIF-and C2F group's scores tended to be high. Consequently, these results suggest that BF group's solid intake pattern is more desirable and that Korean lactating Mother's dependence on commercial weaning food is too high.

  • This study was designed to investigate the influence of Eosungcho (Houttuynia cordata Thunb) mixture on the plasma lipids of pigs. Experimental groups were divided into 3 groups: control group(0%), 5% and 10% Eosungcho feeding groups. Plasma concentration of total cholesterol, atherosclerotic index, free cholesterol and cholesteryl ester were significantly lower in the Eosungcho powder 5% and 10% feeding groups than control group. Plasma contents of HDL-cholesterol, cholesteryl ester ratio, triglyceride and phospholipid were significantly different between 10% Eosungcho feeding group and control group. Plasma concentration of LDL-cholesterol was significantly love in 10% Eosungcho feeding group($76.5{\pm}5.4mg/dL$) than in control group($86.5{\pm}5.6mg/dL$). Plasma concentration of VLDL and chylomicron were showed similar tendency to LDL-cholesterol. Also, blood sugar, GOT and GPT concentration were significantly lower in 10% Eosungcho feeding group than in control group. In control group, the ratio of saturated fatty acid to unsaturated fatty acid was 58.1 : 51.9, but in 5% and 10% Eosungcho feeding groups, those were 42.1 : 57.9 and 41.0 : 59.0, respectively. The component of main fatty acid was different between control group and Eosungcho feeding groups. In Eosungcho feeding groups, main unsaturated fatty acids were oleic acid(18:1) and linoleic acid(18:2). From the results, addition of Eosungcho powder might be effective in improving the plasma lipid components in pigs.

  • Purpose : This study was conducted to evaluate the red cell indices and frequency of iron deficiency anemia based on the feeding patterns of nine-month-old infants. Methods : Blood tests were performed on 253 nine-month-old infants, who visited Il Sin Christian Hospital for health check-ups from January to December 2007. Their parents answered telephonic questions regarding their feeding patterns and weaning foods. Results : Three infants groups were created according to feeding patterns before they started weaning foods. One group was exclusively breast-fed (48.6%), another had mixed feeding (27.3%), and the third had artificial milk feeding (24.1%). Red cell indices (hemoglobin, hematocrit, MCV, MCH) of the breast-fed group were comparatively lower than those of the other two groups (P<0.05). Twenty-five infants (9.9%) were diagnosed with iron-deficiency anemia. According to feeding patterns, the frequency of anemia was highest in the breast-fed group. Six infants who started weaning foods before six months of age (113 infants) were diagnosed with iron-deficiency anemia (5.3%), and nineteen who started after six months of age (140 infants) were diagnosed with iron-deficiency anemia (13.6%). Conclusion : When nine-month old infants visit hospitals for health check-ups, pediatricians must consider their feeding pattern and weaning foods histories, and then recommend screening blood tests for iron-deficiency anemia.

  • This study was carried out to determine, the effects of sodium alginate and cellulose on the plasma lipoportein composition and cholesterol metabolism inrats. Each experimental diet contained 105 sodium alginate and cellulose by weight, respectivley and rats were fed fro 4 weeks. The results obtained were as follows : The feeding of sodium alginate and cellulose decreased total plasma cholesterol slightly . total cholesterol of Chylomicron /VLDL- , LDL-fraction and liver were decreased significantly insodium alginate group. HDL-cholesterol was slightly increased in soidum alginate group. The feeding of sodium alginate significantly lowered plasma , Chylomicron VLDL-, LDL-fraction and liver TG concentrations compared with those fed fiber-free diet . The HMG-CoA reductase activity was not different among diet groups but the lowest activity was observed in sodium alginate group. The feeding of sodium alginate significantly increased fecal cholesterol , TG, and bile acid excretion . In summary , the ingestion of sodium alginate decreased cholesterol and TG concentrations of plasma and liver. This may be explained by the facts that fecal cholesterol, bile acid and TG level were increased significantly in sodium alginate group.
