A Preliminary Study on Effects of Different Dietary Selenium (Se) Levels on Growth Performance and Toxicity in Juvenile Black Seabream, Acathopagrus schlegeli (Bleeker)

  • This preliminary feeding trial was conducted to study the effects of different dietary selenium (Se) levels on growth performance and toxicity in juvenile black seabream, Acanthopagrus schlegeli (Bleeker). Fish averaging $7.0{\pm}0.1g$ ($mean{\pm}SD$) were fed one of the five semi-purified diets containing 0.21, 0.30, 0.52, 1.29 and 12.3 mg sodium selenite ($Na_2SeO_3$)/kg diet (Se 0.21, Se 0.30, Se 0.52, Se 1.29 or Se 12.3) for 15 weeks. After the feeding trial, weight gain (WG), feed efficiency (FE), specific growth rate (SGR) and protein efficiency ratio (PER) of fish fed Se 0.21, Se 0.30, Se 0.52 and Se 1.29 diets were not significantly different, however fish fed Se 12.3 diet showed significantly lower WG, FE, SGR and PER than those of fish fed the other diets (p<0.05). Fish fed Se 0.21, Se 0.30, Se 0.52, Se 1.29 and Se 12.3 diets showed no significant differences in hematocrit (PCV), hemoglobin (Hb) and red blood cells (RBC), however fish fed Se 12.3 diet showed lower values of PCV, Hb and RBC than those of fish fed the other diets. Histopathological lesions such as tubular necrosis and polycystic dilation of tubules in the kidney tissues were observed in fish fed Se 12.3 diet. Se was accumulated in a dose-dependent manner in the liver, kidney, muscle and gill tissues. Based on the results of this preliminary feeding trial, a dietary Se level of 0.21 mg $Na_2SeO_3/kg$ diet could be optimal for proper growth performances, and a dietary Se level of 12.3 mg $Na_2SeO_3/kg$ diet may ultimately be toxic to juvenile black seabream, Acanthopagrus schlegeli.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the laboratory formulated extruded pellet (EP) for olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus in the East Sea. Three replicate groups of 3,200 fish per each tank (initial weight of $28.1{\pm}0.2g$) were fed one of the two EPs (EP and CEP) and Moist pellet (MP) for 16 months in a commercial farm (Pohang, Korea). Survival was not significantly affected by experimental diets (P>0.05). Weight gain and specific growth rate of fish fed the EP were not significantly different from those of fish fed the MP, but that of fish fed CEP was significantly lower than that of fish fed EP and MP (P<0.05). Feed efficiency and protein efficiency ratio of fish fed the EP was significantly higher than those of fish fed MP (P<0.05), but not significantly different from those of fish fed CEP (P>0.05). The Contents of moisture, crude protein and crude lipid in the dorsal muscle were not significantly different among all groups (P>0.05). These results clearly indicated that the laboratory formulated extruded pellet used in this study can be developed to replace the moist pellet without affecting any growth performance of olive flounder in the commercial farm feeding trail.

The Effects of Different Feeding Strategies on the Growth of Young Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus L., in a Freshwater Recirculating System during Summer

  • We evaluated the effects of different feeding strategies on the growth of young Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus L., in a freshwater recirculating system during summer. Each of twenty fish (Mean body weight$\pm$ SD; 37. 7$\pm$0.10 g) were randomly distributed into each of 24 tanks. Eight treatments were prepared in triplicate. Control fish were hand-fed commercial feed twice daily without starvation. The other seven treatments employed different feeding and starvation strategies ranging from I day starved and 1 day fed (1DS+ 1DF) to 7 days starved to 7 days fed (7DS+7DF). All fish survived to the end of the 44-day feeding trial. The amount of food supplied was highest for the control fish in the control. Food supplied to fish in the 3DS+3DF and 4DS+4DF treatments was significantly lower than that of fish in the 1DS+1DF and 2DS+2DF treatments, but significantly higher than that of fish in the 5DS+5DF, 6DS+6DF and 7DS+7DF treatments. The weight gain of control fish was significantly higher than that of fish in other treatments. Feed efficiency ratio (FER) for fish in the 7DS+7DF treatment was significantly higher than that of fish in the control group, but it did not differ from that of fish in the 1DS+1DF and 2DS+2DF treatments. We concluded that young Nile tilapia raised with different starvation and feeding regimes during the summer in a freshwater recirculating system did not catch up in growth to fish fed daily. However, the enhanced FER of Nile tilapia in the 7DS+ 7DF, 2DS+ 2DF, and 1 DS+ I DF treatments partly explains the compensatory growth of the fish, although their weight gain was relatively low.

  • 1톤/일급 분류층 가스화기를 사용하여 국내 정유공장에서 발생하는 중질잔사유를 1,000~1,20$0^{\circ}C$의 온도 조건과 3kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$의 압력조건에서 가스화 시켜 CO, H$_2$, $CO_2$, 메탄의 합성가스 발생 농도 변화와 탄소전환율, 냉가스효율을 고찰하였다. 실험 결과 중잔유 공급량 31 /kg/hr인 조건에서 H$_2$ 최대 45%, CO 최대 26%인 가스농도를 보여주었으며, 시료 공급량 20 kg/hr, 산소/시료비가 1.2인 조건에서 탄소전환율은 최대 87%, 냉가스효율은 최대 68%를 얻을 수 있었다. 가스화기 운전의 가장 중요한 변수인 산소량의 변화에 따른 합성가스 농도의 변화는 수소성분의 증가율이 CO와 $CO_2$에 비해 높았으며, 산소/시료비가 0.6에서 1.2로 변화하는 동안 가스화기의 온도는 11$0^{\circ}C$ 정도 증가하였다. 또한, 가스화기 온도 증가에 따른 메탄농도의 감소폭은 온도가 높을수록 컸으며, 메탄농도와 가스화기 온도간에는 가스화기 온도를 유추할 수 있는 상관관계가 있었다.

  • 바이오매스 또는 가연성 폐기물로부터 중발열량($2,500-5,000kcal/Nm^3$) 합성가스를 생산하기 위한 5 kg/hr 처리규모 일체형 이중유동층 가스화기를 제작하고 가스화 온도, 원료 투입량, 수증기/원료 무게비(S/F) 등의 운전조건이 가스화기의 거동에 미치는 영향을 조사하였다. 가스화 온도와 원료 공급량이 증가할수록 발생되는 합성가스 중 $H_2$와 CO 농도, 합성가스 유량, 냉가스 효율은 증가하였다. 반면에 수증기/원료 무게비가 실험범위 내에서 증가할수록 발생되는 합성가스 중 $H_2$와 CO 농도, 합성가스 유량, 냉가스 효율은 감소하였다. 원료가 목분인 경우 $H_2$ 농도 41%, CO 농도 32%, 냉가스 효율 70.1%, 합성가스 저위발열량 $3,428kcal/Nm^3$이 가능하였다. 원료가 음식폐기물인 경우 $H_2$ 농도 37%, CO 농도 23.9%, 냉가스 효율 66.7%, 합성가스 저위 발열량 $3,670kcal/Nm^3$이 가능하였다.

Determination of The Growth Performances and Meat Quality of Broilers Fed Saccharomyces cerevisiae as a Probiotic in Two Different Feeding Intervals

  • This study was conducted to determine the effect of Saccharomyces cerevisiae (SC) as a dietary probiotic and evaluated the most suitable feeding interval for this probiotic on growth performance, carcass yield, and meat quality parameters in broiler chickens. In total, 1,050 one-day-old Cobb 500 chicks were randomly assigned to one of seven dietary treatment groups, in a $2{\times}3$ factorial arrangement with 3 SC dosages (0.6%, 1%, and 1.4%) and two feeding intervals [long term (LT) for 35 days and short term (ST) for 28 days after hatching], with a negative control diet (NC; 0% SC). Triplicate experiments were performed with 50 birds per cage. Broilers fed a diet including SC showed increased (p<0.01) daily gain and feed efficiency compared to the control. Further, broilers fed the 1.4% SC supplemented diet showed a significantly increased (p<0.01) average daily gain (ADG) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) compared to broilers fed the 0.6% and 1% SC incorporated diets. Similarly, broilers fed an LT SC diet showed a greater (p<0.01) increase in ADG and FCR compared to broilers fed an ST SC diet. Moreover, broilers fed an LT SC diet displayed a reduced (p<0.05) meat pH, gizzard weight, and increased (p<0.05) meat water-holding capacity compared to broilers fed an ST SC diet. Broilers fed the 1.4% SC supplemented diet showed increased (p<0.05) thigh muscle weight compared to broilers fed the 0.6% and 1% SC supplemented diets. In conclusion, broilers fed LT SC diets showed improved growth performance and carcass quality parameters compared to broilers fed ST SC diets, and the NC diet, from hatching to day 35.

  • Food consumption and conversion efficiency of eri silkworm Samia ricini Donovan were studied during $4^{th}$ and $5^{th}$ larval instars by feeding castor leaves fortified with 100, 200, 300, 400 and 500 ppm concentrations of aqueous extracts of cyanobacteria Anabaena variabilis. The nutritional indices viz., ingesta, digesta, approximate digestibility (%), reference ratio and efficiency parameters like ECI and ECD were recorded which were significantly high at 400 ppm concentration treated batches of $4^{th}$ instar larvae over control batches. The decline in nutritional efficiency parameters of $5^{th}$ instar treated larvae might be due to higher utilization of the digested food for metabolic activities. Significant difference of ECI to cocoon % and non-significant difference of ECD to cocoon% and shell were observed between the treatments and control. Cyanabacteria feed supplement contains antibiotic and nutritions factors which has reflective effect on the biological parameters in eri silkworm and therefore has greater application in commercial eri silkworm rearing.

Monensin의 급여가 한우의 증체 및 제1위액의 성상에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Feeding Monensin on the Body Gain and Ruminal Parameters of Han-Woo Cattle)

  • Monensin의 첨가 급여가 한우의 육생산 효율 및 제1위내 발효성상에 미치는 효과를 구명하고자 본 실험을 실시하였다. 거세우 72두(평균체중 266.9kg)를 0, 22, 및 33 ppm의 monensm 처리구에 처리당 3반복, 반복당 8두씩 체중이 비슷하도록 배치하여 옥외 사육장에서 140일간 사양시험을 실시하였다. Monensin은 농후사료에 0, 22, 및 33 ppm 수준으로 첨가하였으며, 농후사료와 조사료(15cm 정도로 절단한 볏짚)는 자유채식 시켰다. 본 실험에서 얻어진 결과는 다음과 같다. 1. 일당증체량은 각 처리구 간에 유의한 차이를 나타내지 않았다. 2. 총사료(농후사료+조사료)섭취량은 처리구간에 유의성은 없었으나 monensin 급여수준의 증가와 함께 감소하는 경향이어서 33ppm구에서 약 5% 의 감소를 나타내었다. 3. 총사료효율(총사료섭취량/증체량)에 있어서는 처리구간에 유의성은 없었으나 0ppm 구에 비하여 22ppm구와 33ppm구가 각각 5.2%와 5.1%의 거의 통일한 개선을 나타냈다. 4. 제1위내 total VFA와 acetic acid의 농도는 monensin에 의한 일정한 경향이 없었고, propionic acid 농도는 처리간에 유의성은 없었으나 무첨가구에 비하여 22 및 33ppm 구에서 각각 13.8%와 19.3%의 증가를 보였다. Butyric acid 농도는 22ppm구에서도 감소하는 경향이었지만, 33ppm구에서는 유의한 ($p{\leq}0.054$) 감소가 인정되었다. A/P비는 monensin 무첨가구에 비하여 22ppm구와 33ppm구에서 각각 12.5 %의 감소를 나타내었다. 결론적으로 monensin은 propionic acid 의 증가와 butyric acid 의 감소 및 A/P비의 감소를 가져오는 효과와 함께 사료섭취량을 감소시켜서 비육우의 사료효율을 개선하는 효과가 있었다. 따라서 monensin은 축우의 비육시 육생산 효율을 높이기 위한 사료첨가제로서 충분한 사용가치가 있다고 사료되며, 22ppm과 33ppm 수준이 거의 통일한 사료효율을 보인 것으로 보아 22ppm 수준에서도 기대하는 효과를 얻을 수 있을 것으로 생각된다.

EFFECTS OF DIETARY CALCIUM LEVELS ON PERFORMANCE OF KOREAN NATIVE CATTLE

  • Sixteen Korean native bulls weighing about 211 kg were randomly allotted to investigate the effect of different dietary calcium levels on performance. Feeding period was divided into growing period and fattening period for 180 days. Four calcium levels (0.44, 0.58, 0.72 and 0.86%) were used to each period. Bulls fed the diet containing 0.72% calcium had greater body weight gain and consumed more feed than bulls fed diets containing 0.44, 0.58 and 0.86% calcium and improved in feed efficiency. Bulls fed the diet containing 0.44% calcium were worst in performance. It can be concluded that Korean native bulls in growing and fattening period required no more than 0.72% calcium in diet that contained 0.55% phosphorus, and appeared that when ratio of calcium to phosphorus intake was 1.45, performance of Korean native bulls was most beneficial.

UASB 공정에서 기질농도 및 기질주입 기간비가 슬러지 입상화에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Substrate Concentration and Feeding Period Ratio on Sludge Granulation in UASB Process)

  • The basic mechanism of the granular sludge formation which is the most important factor in the start-up and stable operators is not confirmed yet. In this study, the effect of granular sludge formation was investigated with the different substrate concentrations and the various ratios of substrate supply/deficiency. The granular sludge formation in the UASB reactor was closely related to the substrate concentrations and the ratio of substrate supply/deficlency The granular sludge formation was not accelerated at low substrate concentration. It was convinced that granular sludge formation was accelerated when the substrate supply with high concentration was stopped at UASB reactor. From this experiment, it was estimated that granular sludge was formed by the combination of hydrogen utilizing bacteria that form hydrogen condition and acid forming bacteria at substrate deficit condition by mutual symbiosis. Though the removal efficiency of organic matter was decreased as the influent substrate concentration was Increased, the higher the influent substrate the better the granular sludge formation.
