Sexual maturity and growth characteristics of Octopus minor were investigated in 796 individuals from mud flats in Goorori, Muan-Goon, Korea. Gonadosomatic index (GSI) peaked between June and July in females and between November and January in males. The discrepancy in the index peaks between females and males might result from the earlier sexual maturation of males. The sex ratio was biased toward females (68%) in April and toward males (78%) in September, although the differences were not significant (p>0.05). In females, about 50% of individuals with a mantle length of 70.6 mm were sexually mature versus 100% of individuals with mantle lengths over 80 mm. In females, fecundity was also related to size, ranging from 44 eggs in individuals with a mantle length of 54 mm to 179 eggs in the female with a mantle length of 100.5 mm. The relationship between mantle length (ML) an body weight (BW) was BW=0.008 ML$^{2.2797}$ (n=389, r$^2$=0.83, p<0.01) in males and BW=0.029 ML$^{2.2797}$ (n=407, r$^2$=0.74, p<0.01) in females. Analysis of co-variation showed that the difference in the slopes of the two regression lines was significant (p<0.01). Analysis of mantle length-frequency for each month revealed 1 to 3 normal distribution modes. The growth parameters obtained by fitting the modal progression to the seasonalized von Bertalanffy growth function (VBGF) were ML$\infty$= 112.38 mm, K=1.9, C=0.90, and WP=0.1. The results indicate that the seasonal growth oscillation of the stock is very strong and winter is the season when growth is the slowest.

We present age and growth data for Ilisha elongata, based on 363 specimens caught in 1999 and 2000 around Jeju Island and the southwest coast of Korea. Scale and ring radii of each ring group showed a direct one-to-one relationship, with ring radius increasing as scale radius increased. The relationship between fork length and scale radius was FL=39.553SR+60.935 for females, FL=39.474SR+54.026 for males, and FL=39.608SR+57.547 for both sexes. Monthly changes in the marginal index indicated that a new ring appears once each year (in July). Maximum age, mean age and mean fork length of fish were 10 years, 5.0 years, and 349mm, respectively. Von Bertalanffy's growth equations were $FL_t=495.4{\times}[1-\exp(-0.2586(t+0.6487))]$ for fork length (mm) and $W_t=1,112.5{\times}[1-\exp(-0.2586(t+0.6487))]^{2.874}$ for body weight (g) for both sexes. Monthly changes in the gonadosomatic index (GSI) indicated that the spawning period was in June and July, which corresponded closely with ring formation time. Differences in monthly GSI changes in 1999 and 2000 may be related to water temperature variation. Fecundity ranged from 5,664 to 176,290 eggs per individual (n=43, fork length 264-470mm). The relationship between fecundity(F) and fork length was $F=7.7{\times}10^{-7}{\times}FL^{4.9269}$.
Reproductive ecology of the snow crab Chionoecetes opilio was investigated in terms of the reproductive organs, abdominal flap, fecundity, and maturity. Specimens were collected with gill nets and trawls from June 2002 to May 2003 in the eastern waters of Korea. The female and male C. opilio are distinguished only by the shape of the abdominal flap, which is triangular in males and circular in females. The gonads of female and male crabs are generally X-shaped. The male gonad is white, while the female gonad appears milk-white after spawning and then turns from light orange to dark orange with maturation. The female gonads matured from June, and mature and immature groups could be distinguished from December to February or March. Brooding eggs changed from bright orange to dark brown with formation of the compound eye immediately before hatching. Accordingly, the main spawning season is February and March. The minimum maturity carapace width of female crabs was 61.1 mm, and the mean fecundity is about 108,300 eggs.
Contribution of Wolbachia infection to fitness of a species (developmental time, adult life span, fecundity and ovipositional period) was measured in the susceptible and dicofol-resistant strains of two spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch, on miniature roses. Based on ftsZPCR assay, Wolbachia infection was confirmed only in the susceptible strain. The susceptible strain had significantly higher fecundity (eggs/female) and shorter developmental times than the resistant strain. Longer adult life span and ovipositional period were observed in the susceptible strain. Fitness differences were appeared to influence dicofol resistance development. Similar measurements were performed with progeny from two reciprocal $F_1$crosses. Similar to other examples of cytoplasmic incompatibility induced by Wolbachia, subsequent cross between uninfected female and infected male spider mites were different from the other combination: a high egg mortality and a male-biased sex ratio. When the intrinsic rate of natural increase was calculated, the cross between uninfected female and infected male spider mites had a significantly lower rate($0.09\pm$0.01) than did the other combination ($0.20\pm$0.01). These results suggest that the dynamic and evolution of the fitness are closely associated with dicofol resistance and Wolbachia infection in the two spotted spider mites.

Maturity and spawning of the pointhead flounder, Hippoglossoides pinetorum were investigated on the basis of samples collected in the coastal waters off Gangwon-do, East Sea from January 2012 to December 2013. The average total length of H. pinetorum was 25.0 cm and 21.9 cm for females and males, respectively. The spawning period was from May to July according to monthly changes gonadosomatic index (GSI) and maturity stages. The spawning period in Gangwon-do was delayed relatively to that in Gyeongbuk-do. The mature egg diameter ranged between $300-700{\mu}m$. The relationship between TL and fecundity (F) was F = 63.574 TL - 1471.3 ($R^2=0.7603$), that is, the larger total length, the more fecundity H. pinetorum had. We estimated that the TLs at 50% group maturity were 25.6 cm for females and 19.9 cm for males. The spawning ecology by sea area should be considered efficient resource management for H. pinetorum. Furthermore, it is necessary to study more on the relationships among growth, maturity and water temperature variations in the East Sea.
Two-spotted spider mite (TSSM), Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae) is one of the major pests in apple orchards. TSSM was known to show different population dynamics depending on apple cultivars. We tested the host plant preference and fitness of TSSM on the leaves of 3 apple cultivars, Fuji, Tsugaru, and Hongro. TSSM showed higher behavioral preference to Fuji than Tsugaru and Hongro, and showed a higher fecundity in Fuji. The immature development of this mite was the shortest in Fuji and longest in Hongro. Total fecundities were not significantly different among cultivars, but daily fecundity was higher and longevity was lower in Fuji. Hongro was the less preferred cultivar for TSSM, and showed the lowest fitness by life table parameters. These results could explain the possible mechanisms of differential population dynamics among apple cultivars. Further study including diverse apple cultivars currently available in Korea could help to deploy time- and cultivar- specific IPM tactics.
Morphometric relationships, condition factor (CF) and reproductive biology are significant tools in fish stock management, fish biology, physiology, conservation and ecology. Growth and reproductive strategy of Oreochromis niloticus were studied from 343 fish specimens collected from Lake Shala between January and December 2018. Fish samples ranged from 7.7 cm to 33.0 cm in total length (TL) and from 7.80 g to 708.21 g in total weight (TW) were collected using gillnets of 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 mm mesh sizes. The length-weight relationship of O. niloticus was TW = 0.0104TL3.19, indicating positive allometric growth of the fish. The sex ratio (0.93:1) was insignificant from the ideal fish distribution of 1:1 (χ2 = 0.47, p > 0.05). Mean CF for males, females and combined sexes was 1.04, 1.06 and 1.05, respectively and statistically insignificant (p > 0.05). The spawning peak occurred in July (rainy) and February (dry) periods, as defined by ripe females and the breeding season. Absolute mean fecundity was 806 eggs and correlated positively with TL and TW of the fish (p < 0.05) (F = 0.56TL2.29, R2 = 0.93, p < 0.05; F = 18.83TW0.67, R2 = 0.90, p < 0.05). The study provides the first detailed account of the morphometric relationships and reproductive biology of O. niloticus in Lake Shala, which can be used as baseline information for successive biological-based studies in Soda Lakes of Ethiopia.

The reproductive characteristics of Pacific anchovy, Engraulis japonicus were investigated using samples randomly collected from the southern waters of Korea between January and December 2021. We analyzed monthly changes in maturity stages, gonadosomatic index (GSI), egg diameter, fecundity, and fork length (FL) at sexual groups maturity of 50%, 75% and 97.5%, and sex ratio (female:male). GSI value showed two peaks in May and August; however, microscopic analysis of E. japonicus gonad tissue revealed that the spawning period was from March to October. The main spawning seasons for the entire populations were from April to June and August to September. The overall sex ratio was female-biased (1 females, 0.89 male). The fecundity (F) of female anchovies ranged from 429 eggs at an FL of 8.0 cm to 13,824 eggs at an FL of 14.9 cm and the relationship between FL and F was 0.0788FL4.422. The FL at 50% group maturity was 8.26 cm for female anchovies. Based on the results, we suggest that the reproductive cycle in Pacific anchovies may be related to pulses in water temperature and the sexual cycle of the fish.

As agricultural production increases due to population growth, agricultural by-products that are generated at all production stages increase commensurately. Black soldier fly (BSF) (Hermetia illucens) treatment has potential as an environmentally friendly process to combat the environmental pollution caused by agricultural by-products. This study examined the utilization of BSF larvae in the decomposition of the by-products of apples and mandarins, fruits commonly produced in South Korea. The BSF test larvae were fed apple pomace or mandarin waste, and the control larvae were fed calf feed. Larval weight and size were measured at 4-day intervals until larvae reached the pre-pupal stage. Larval development time, survival rate, and BSF fecundity rate were calculated for all three substrates. Waste reduction and bioconversion ratios were also calculated. The developmental time of larvae fed with apple pomace and mandarin waste was greater than that of the control larvae. The average weight of larvae fed with the fruit by-products was less than that of the control. There was no significant difference in the survival rate of BSF larvae or the fecundity rate of BSF between the substrates used in this study. BSF larvae decomposed 48.0% and 61.5% of apple pomace and mandarin waste, respectively. The bioconversion efficiency rates of BSF larvae fed with apple pomace and mandarin waste were 9.1% and 12.1%, respectively. These results indicated that decomposition of single fruit by-products by BSF larvae is an environmentally friendly and effective bioconversion process.

The maturity and spawning of the large yellow croaker Larmichthys crocea were investigated using samples randomly collected in the Jeju coastal area, Korea. We analyzed monthly changes in maturity stages, gonadosomatic index (GSI), and egg diameter. Additionally, we verified fecundity by size class and total length (TL) at sexual group maturity at 50%, 75%, and 97.5%, as well as by sex ratio (female vs. male). The overall sex ratio of females to males was 1:0.42. The GSI values showed a peak in October, but the spawning season, revealed by the microscopic analysis of gonadal tissue of L. crocea was from October 2021 to March 2022, with the main spawning period from October to November. The fecundity (F) of female L. crocea ranged from 39,232 eggs at 20 to 29.9 cm to 251,003 eggs at 50 to 59.9 cm, with the relationship between TL and F being 80.244TL-1641.6. In females, TL at 50%, 75%, and 97.5% maturity was 22.4, 24.3, and 29.0 cm, respectively.
