두류의 첨가가 당뇨병 쥐의 장기능과 당뇨증세에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Legume Supplementation on the Gastrointestinal Function and Diabetic Symptoms in Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetic Rats)

  • The present study was conducted to evaluate the usefulness of four kinds of legumes(black soybean: BS, yellow soybean: YS, green peas: GP, soybean curd residue: SCR) as a high-fiber supplement in the therapeutic diet for diabetic patients. Seven groups of normal and streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats were fed isocaloric experimental diets containing 8% dietary fiber from one of legumes for 6 weeks. The effects of legumes on the gastrointestinal function and diabetic symptoms in diabetic rats were also examined and compared with the effects of cellulose or pectin diet. Legume supplementations had no significant effects on alleviating typical diabetic symptoms such as polydipsia, polyphasia, polyuria, and urinary glucose excretion when compared with cellulose or pectin supplementations. The supplementations of legumes all resulted in remarkable changes in gastrointestinal functions: shortening of GI transit time and increases in fecal volume, fecal water and crude fat contents. Legume supplementations appeared to supress the damages of the small intestine villi and the enteritis symptoms in diabetic rats. GP led to regular villus patterns closer to normal villus. BS, YS and GP led to the enlargement of cecum in diabetic rats. In conclusion, the present studies have demonstrated that legumes may possess a significant physiological actions in the control of various diabetic conditions.

Dose-response assessment of the anti-cancer efficacy of soy isoflavones in dimethylhydrazine-treated rats fed 6% fructooligosaccharide

  • We investigated the combinatorial effects of different doses of dietary soy isoflavones (SI) and fructooligosaccharide (FOS) in a rat model of colon cancer. We hypothesized that increased bioavailability of SI metabolites due to dietary FOS may increase production of bioactive equol and affect colon carcinogenesis in a dose-dependent manner. Sprague-Dawley male rats were injected with 12-dimethylhydrazine (DMH) and were providec experimental diets that contained 0, 10, 50, 150, or 500 mg SI per kg of diet and 6% FOS for 12 weeks. The number of aberrant crypt foci (ACF) and the expression of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) in colonic tissues were significantly decreased in the 6% FOS-fed groups compared to the control group. Gut transit time and fecal pH were significantly lower, and fecal concentrations of bifidobacteria were increased with 6% FOS. However, dietary SI supplementation in combination with 6% dietary FOS did not affect ACF formation or COX-2 expression. Plasma equol concentrations were dose-dependently increased by supplementation of SI up to 500 mg/kg of diet. In conclusion, SI supplementation up to 500 mg/kg of diet appeared to have no additive beneficial effects in rats with chemically-induced colon cancer that were fed 6% FOS, although plasma equol was dose-dependently increased.

The thresholds for recognition and detection of flavors became elevated and salivary gland acinar cells decreased in the old age. But most esophageal function remained relatively Intact. Although gastric emptying time has been slowed with aging, the total intestinal transit time did not differ. Atropic gastritis due to H. pylori in old man decreased secretion of acid and Intrinsic factor and absorbability of calcium and iron. Pancreatic secretion is droned in older persons. Prevalence of gallstones rised with age. Liver size and portal blood flow decreased significantly with age. Mucosal surface area has been reported to be slightly diminished in the aging man. Glucose transporters decreased and Insulin tolerance Increased. Absorption of aromatic amino acid is diminished with age. Dietary protein In that aging human increased fecal nitrogen excretion. Vitamin A tolerance increased. Vitamin D receptor concentration decreased and resistance to 1,25-(OH)2D3 action increased. Permeability of aging small Intestine Increased. Zinc balance dirt not differ Copper absorption appeared not to be significantly affected by age. Neurotensin secretion decreased thus slowed colonic peristaltic movements and Intestinal mucosal growth.

Performance Responses, Nutrient Digestibility, Blood Characteristics, and Measures of Gastrointestinal Health in Weanling Pigs Fed Protease Enzyme

  • Although exogenous protease enzymes have been used in poultry diets quite extensively, this has not been the case for pig diets. In general, due to their better gut fermentative capacity and longer transit time, pigs have greater capacity to digest dietary proteins than poultry. However, in early-weaned piglets, the stress brought about by weaning adversely affects the digestion of dietary proteins. Therefore, a study was conducted to determine the effects of a commercial protease enzyme in weanling pigs. Indices of growth, nutrient digestibility, blood profiles, fecal microflora, fecal gas emission and fecal scores were measured during the study. A total of 50 weanling pigs ($6.42{\pm}0.12kg$) at 28 d of age were randomly assigned to receive 1 of 2 dietary treatments: i) control diet (corn-soy based) with no supplemental protease (CON), and ii) control diet+200 g/ton protease (PROT) for 42 d. A completely randomized design consisting of 2 treatments, 5 replicates, and 5 pigs in each replicate was used. Growth performance in terms of body weight ($27.04{\pm}0.38kg$ vs $25.75{\pm}0.39kg$; p<0.05) and average daily gain ($491{\pm}7.40g$ vs $460{\pm}7.46g$; p<0.05) in PROT fed pigs were increased significantly, but gain per feed ($0.700{\pm}0.01$ vs $0.678{\pm}0.01$; p>0.05) was similar between treatments at d 42. Relative to CON pigs, PROT fed pigs had increased (p<0.05) apparent total tract digestibility ($84.66%{\pm}0.65%$ vs $81.21%{\pm}1.13%$ dry matter and $84.02%{\pm}0.52%$ vs $80.47%{\pm}1.22%$ nitrogen) and decreased (p<0.05) $NH_3$ emission ($2.0{\pm}0.16ppm$ vs $1.2{\pm}0.12ppm$) in the feces at d 42. Except for a decreased (p<0.05) in blood creatinine level, no differences were observed in red blood cell, white blood cell, lymphocyte, urea nitrogen, and IgG concentrations between treatments. Fecal score and fecal microflora (Lactobacillus and E. coli) were also similar between CON and PROT groups. Overall, the supplementation of protease enzyme in weanling pigs resulted in improved growth rate and nutrient digestibility. Exogenous protease enzyme reduced fecal $NH_3$ emission, thus, potentially serving as a tool in lowering noxious gas contribution of livestock production in the environment.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effets of chitosan and beef tallow at different level on glucose and lipid metabolism in rats. Dietary fot level was 20% and 40%, and chitosan was given at levels of 0%, 3%, and 5%(wt/wt) of diet. Chitosan supplement tended to decrease the serum total lipids, total cholesterol, and triglycerides. HDL cholesterol and HDL cholesterol : total cholesterol ratio tended to increase with 5% chitosan supplementation. LDL cholesterol and VLDL triglyceride tended to decrease with chitosan supplementation. Lipid concentration of liver and epididymal fat pad(EEP) tended to decrease with medium dietary fat and chitosan treatment. fecal excretion of total lipid and triglyceride exhibited a tendency to increase with high fat levels and chitosan. Length of small intestine and gastrointestinal transit time were not affected by dietary fit levels or chitosan supplements. Therefore, it could be suggested that chitosan supplement had beneficial effects on lipid metabolism. (Korean J Nutrition 31(7) : 1112-1120, 1998)

당근과 무의 단세포물 섭취가 흰쥐의 배변특성, 무기질 흡수율 및 소장과 대장의 구조에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Single Cells of Carrot and Radish on the Fecal Excretion Properties, Mineral Absorption Rate and Structure of Small Intestine and Colon in Rats)

  • 당근, 무 단세포물이 흰쥐의 배변특성, 무기질 흡수율 및 소장과 대장의 구조에 미치는 영향을 조사하기 위하여 5% 배합비에 해당하는 건조한 단세포물을 첨가하여 제조한 식이를 급여 후 무기질 흡수율, 변의 중량과 미세구조, 장 통과 시간, 소장과 대장의 무게 및 길이 등을 측정하였다. 당근, 무 생시료와 이들 단세포물의 식이섬유 함량과 조성을 분석한 결과 건물량 기준으로 생시료 건조물의 경우 당근은 총식이섬유 함량이 28.76%, 불용성 식이섬유 함량이 21.45%였으며, 무는 총식이섬유 함량이 23.14%, 불용성 식이섬유 함량이 16.77%였다. 단세포물의 경우 당근은 총식이섬유 함량이 44.68%, 불용성식이섬유 함량이 40.16%였으며, 무는 총식이섬유 함량이 48.0%, 불용성식이섬유 함량이 45.79%였다. 당근, 무와 같은 채소류의 단세포물은 불용성 식이섬유의 좋은 급원이었다. 32마리의 Sprague-Dawley계 흰쥐를 대조군, 섬유소군, 당근 단세포물군 및 무 단세포물군 등 4개의 처리군으로 구분하여 5% 단세포물이 함유된 식이를 4주간 급여하였다. 무기질 중 Mg의 흡수율은 대조군에 비해 당근과 무 단세포물군에서 유의적으로 높았다. 그리고 섬유소 급여는 변의 양을 유의적으로 증가시켰으며, 지질소화율은 유의적으로 감소시켰다. 대장의 길이는 다른 군에 비해 당근과 무 군이 유의적으로 긴 것으로 나타났다. 또한 주사전자현미경에 의한 소장 융모 관찰 결과 섬유소와 단세포물급여군의 융모에서 수는 적고 잎모양의 돌림주름이 조밀하게 발달되어 있었다. 이상의 결과로 당근과 무의 단세포물 5%급여는 식이섬유 흡수율을 증가시키고, 체중도 유의적으로 증가시키는 것으로 나타났다. 그리고 변의 식이섬유 증가와 장통과 시간을 단축하는 것으로 나타났으며, 기타 변비와 관련된 배변특성 등에 영향을 미치는 것으로 판단되었다.

송기 분말이 Loperamide로 유도된 흰쥐의 변비 완화에 미치는 효과 (Effect of Pine Inner Bark (Song-gi) Powder on Relief from Constipation in Loperamide-induced Rats)

  • This study investigated the effects of insoluble dietary fibers from pine (Pinus radiata D. Don) inner bark powder (PIBP) on loperamide constipation in rats. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were administered PIBP in their diets at concentrations of 5% and 10% for 4 weeks. Rats were divided in to four groups, normal diet group (Cont), a normal diet and loperamide group (Lop), 5% PIBP experimental diet and loperamide group (Lop+PIBP 5%), and 10% PIBP experimental diet and loperamide group (Lop+PIBP 10%). Constipation was induced by oral administration of loperamide (2 mg/kg, twice per day) for the last three days of the experiment. Food intake, body weight, properties of feces, gastrointestinal transit time, and serum lipid profiles were measured. When compared with the normal diet and loperamide group (Lop), there were increases in fecal pellet number (p<0.05), wet weight (p<0.001), and water content (p<0.001). Positive results were derived from relevant indicators to improve constipation. In addition, the number of fecal pellets in the colon was not significant, and decreased as PIBP content increased. PIBP had a concentration-dependent effect on reduction of total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, and triglycerides and elevation of HDL-cholesterol. These results indicate that PIBP may effectively prevent constipation.

옥수수겨가 티아민, 나이아신, 판토텐산의 생체이용율에 미치는 영향 (The Effect of Corn Bran as a Fiber Source on the Utilization of Thiamin Niacin and Pantothenic Acid in Humans)

  • 본연구는 사람을 대상으로하여 8주간 종류가 서로 다른 옥수수겨를 식이섬유질의 급원으로 기본식이에 첨가하여 먹였을 때 티아민, 나이아신 및 판로텐산의 체네 이용율을 살펴보고자 실시되었다. 실험식이의 종류의 옥수수겨를 첨가하지 않은 기본식이(Basal diet : B)와 이에 wet-milled fine(WF)/coarse(WC) corn bran이나 dry-milled fine(DF)/coarse(DC) corn bran을 첨가한 식이들로서 무작위법에 의하여 첫 4주간동안 일부의 피실험자는 B, WF, WC 식이를 급여 받았으며, 나머지 피실험자는 B, DF, DC를 급여받았다. 따라서, 각각의 피실험자들은 8주간의 실험기간동안 모든 실험식이를 섭취하였다. 비타민의 이용율을 측정하기 위하여 24시간 뇨를 채집하였으며 이들을 주별로 나누어 이들 비타민의 뇨중함량을 측정하였고 변을 채집, 건조하여 neutral detergent fiber(NDF)량을 측정하였다. 또한 매일 뇨증의 creatinine치를 측정하여 뇨의 완전한 채집을 도모하였으며 불완전한 채집으로 인한 실험오차를 줄여주기 위하여 비타민의 이용을 계산시 각 주별의 평균 creatinine치에 대하여 비타민 이용율을 보정하여 주었다. 실험분석 결과에 따르면 옥수수겨를 첨가한 식이를 먹는 경우 티아민, 나이아신 및 판토텐산의 생체 이용율이 저하되는 것으로 나타났으며 옥수수겨를 wet-milling 방법으로 처리한 식이의 경우 저하의 효과가 더운 현저한 것으로 보여졌다. 또한 옥수수겨의 처리방법을 막론하고 옥수수겨의 입자가 거친것이 비타민 이용율의 저하효과가 더욱 큰것으로 나타났다. 변건량과 변량에 있어서도 이와 유사한 양상을 보였고 특히 fecal trasit time이 wet-milled corn bran 식이군과 입자가 거친 옥수수군에서 빨랐다. 따라서 본 연구는 옥수수겨가 이들 세가지 B 비타민의 이용율을 저하시키는 것이 식이 섬유질의 종류에 따라서 영향을 받을 수 있음을 시사하고 있다.

식이섬유 첨가식이 Streptozotocin-유도 당뇨쥐의 장기능과 지질 및 당질대사에 미치는 영향 (The Effects of Dietary Fiber Feeding on Gastrointestinal Functions and Lipid and Glucose Metabolism in Streptozotocin-induced Diabetic Rats)

  • This study was conducted to compare the effects of four types of dietary fiber supplementations (cellulose, pectin, guar gum, and polydextrose) on gastrointestinal function, diabetic symptom amelioration and lipid & glucose metabolism in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Six groups of male rats were fed ad libitum dietary fiber-free control diet or one of experimental diets containing 5% dietary fiber for four weeks. All types of dietary fiber supplementation seemed to protect the diabetic animals from the loss of body weight. The primary diabetic symptoms such as polydipsia, polyphasia, polyuria and urinary glucose excretion were ameliorated by cellulose, pectin, and guar gum, but not by polydextrose. Gastrointestinal transit time was significantly shortened and fecal dry weight was significantly increased in all the dietary fiber-supplemented groups except the polydextrose group. Large intestine was significantly lengthened by dietary fiber feeding. The serum triglyceride and total cholesterol levels were effectively lowered by pectin, guar gum and polydextrose. Regardless of their types, the fiber supplementation had no effect on serum HDL-cholesterol. Whereas fasting blood glucose level was significantly lowered by all types of fiber supplementations, glucose tolerance was more effectively improved by pectin and guar gum.

당뇨병 환자를 위한 고식이섬유 보충물의 개발을 위한 연구(I) -해조류 투여가 당뇨쥐의 장기능과 증세호전도에 미치는 영향- (A Study on the development of high-fiber supplements for the diabetic patients (I) -Effect of Seaweed Supplementation on the Gastrointestinal Function and Diabetic Symptom Control in Streptozotocin-induced Diabetic Rats-)

  • The present study was conducted to evaluate the usefulness of four kinds of seaweeds (mixture of purple laver & sea lettuce, sea tangle, sea mustard, agar agar) as a high- fiber supplment in the therapeutic deit for the diabetic patients. Seven groups of normal and streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats were fed dietary fiber-free control diet or one of experimental diets containing 7% of one of the four seaweeds for 6 weeks. The effect of seaweeds supplementation on the body weight change, gastrointestinal function, and the control of diabetic symptoms were examined and compared with the effect of fiber-free diet or pectin diet used as references. The body weight gains of all the diabetic groups were significantly suppressed compared to the normal group. Feed efficiency ratios and body weight gains of seaweed groups were relatively higher than those of the pectin group. Sea tangle appeared to have an effect of alleviating the typical diabetic symptoms such as polyphasia, polydipsia, polyuria, urinary glucose excretion and hyperglycemia indicating its beneficial acition of improving glucose metabolism even though the degree of effectiveness was less than that with pectin. All the supplemntations of seaweeds and pectin ressulted in the significant changes in gastronitestinal functins ; shortening of GI transit time, increase of fecal volume and the length of intestine. Based on their effects of the significant changes in GI function in may be suggested that seaweeds may influence the process of digestion and absorption of nutrients in diabetic animals.
