  • Using a target detection task, this study compared the processing automaticity of phonemes and features in spoken syllable stimuli to determine the primitive representation in speech perception, phoneme or distinctive feature. For this, we modified the visual search task(Treisman et al., 1992) developed to investigate the processing of visual features(ex. color, shape or their conjunction) for auditory stimuli. In our task, the distinctive features(ex. aspiration or coronal) corresponded to visual primitive features(ex. color and shape), and the phonemes(ex. /$t^h$/) to visual conjunctive features(ex. colored shapes). The automaticity is measured by the set size effect that was the increasing amount of reaction time when the number of distracters increased. Three experiments were conducted. The laryngeal features(experiment 1), the manner features(experiment 2), and the place features(experiment 3) were compared with phonemes. The results showed that the distinctive features are consistently processed faster and automatically than the phonemes. Additionally there were differences in the processing automaticity among the classes of distinctive features. The laryngeal features are the most automatic, the manner features are moderately automatic and the place features are the least automatic. These results are consistent with the previous studies(Bae et al., 2002; Bae, 2010) that showed the perceptual hierarchy of distinctive features.

  • The pixel information of the object was obtained sequentially and pixels were clustered to a label by the line labeling method. Feature points were determined by finding the slope for edge pixels after selecting the fixed number of edge pixels. The slope was estimated by the least square method to reduce the detection error. Once a matching point was determined by comparing the feature information of the object and the pattern, the parameters for translation, scaling and rotation were obtained by selecting the longer line of the two which passed through the matching point from left and right sides. Finally, modified Hausdorff Distance has been used to identify the similarity between the object and the given pattern. The multi-label method was developed for recognizing the patterns with more than one label, which performs the modified Hausdorff Distance twice. Experiments have been performed to verify the performance of the proposed algorithm and method for simple target image, complex target image, simple pattern, and complex pattern as well as the partially hidden object. It was proved via experiments that the proposed image matching algorithm for recognizing the object had a good performance of matching.

  • Convolutional Networks (ConvNets) are powerful models that learn hierarchies of visual features, which could also be used to obtain image representations for transfer learning. The basic pipeline for transfer learning is to first train a ConvNet on a large dataset (source task) and then use feed-forward units activation of the trained ConvNet as image representation for smaller datasets (target task). Our key contribution is to demonstrate superior performance of multiple ConvNet layer features over single ConvNet layer features. Combining multiple ConvNet layer features will result in more complex feature space with some features being repetitive. This requires some form of feature selection. We use AdaBoost with single stumps to implicitly select only distinct features that are useful towards classification from concatenated ConvNet features. Experimental results show that using multiple ConvNet layer activation features instead of single ConvNet layer features consistently will produce superior performance. Improvements becomes significant as we increase the distance between source task and the target task.

  • Medical image segmentation techniques based on convolution neural networks indulge in feature extraction triggering redundancy of parameters and unsatisfactory target localization, which outcomes in less accurate segmentation results to assist doctors in diagnosis. In this paper, we propose a multi-level semantic-rich encoding-decoding network, which consists of a Pooling-Conv-Former (PCFormer) module and a Cbam-Dilated-Transformer (CDT) module. In the PCFormer module, it is used to tackle the issue of parameter explosion in the conservative transformer and to compensate for the feature loss in the down-sampling process. In the CDT module, the Cbam attention module is adopted to highlight the feature regions by blending the intersection of attention mechanisms implicitly, and the Dilated convolution-Concat (DCC) module is designed as a parallel concatenation of multiple atrous convolution blocks to display the expanded perceptual field explicitly. In addition, MultiHead Attention-DwConv-Transformer (MDTransformer) module is utilized to evidently distinguish the target region from the background region. Extensive experiments on medical image segmentation from Glas, SIIM-ACR, ISIC and LGG demonstrated that our proposed network outperforms existing advanced methods in terms of both objective evaluation and subjective visual performance.

  • In this study, we performed a study to track the angle between the guided weapon and the target by using the strap-down image seeker, and constructed a test bed that can simulate it visually. This paper describes a method to maintain high-performance feature distribution in the implementation of sparse feature tracking algorithm such as Lucas Kanade's optical flow algorithm for target tracking using image information. We have extended the feature tracking problem to the concept of feature management. To realize this, we constructed visual environment using Unity3D engine and developed image processing simulation using OpenCV. For the co-simulation, dynamic system modeling was performed with Matlab Simulink, the visual environment using Unity3D was constructed, and computer vision work using OpenCV was performed.

  • We present novel methods to generate a sequence of shapes that represents the pattern of morphological development or transformation of Bezier curves. The presented methods utilize the intrinsic geometric structures of a Bezier curve that are derived from rib and fan decomposition (RFD). Morphological development based on RFD shows a characteristic pattern of structural growth of a Bezier curve, which is the direct consequence of development path defined by fans. Morphological transformation based RFD utilizes development patterns of source and target curves to mimic the theory of evolutionary developmental biology: although the source and target curves are quite different in shapes, we can easily find similarities in their younger shapes, which makes it easier to set up feature correspondences for blending them. We also show that further controls on base transformation for intensity of feature blending, and extrapolation can compensate the immaturity of blended curves. We demonstrate the experimental results where transformation patterns are smoother and have unique geometric style that cannot be generated using conventional methods based on multi-linear blending.

  • In this paper, two Fuzzy Logics for path planning of an autonomous mobile robot are proposed. If a target point is given, such problems regarding the velocity and object recognition are closely related with path to which the mobile robot navigates. Therefore, to ensure safety navigation of the mobile robot for two fuzzy logic parts, path planning considering the surrounding environment was performed in this paper. First, feature points for local and global path are determined by utilizing Cell Decomposition off-line computation. Second, the on-line robot using two Fuzzy Logics navigates around path when it tracks the feature points. We demonstrated optimized path planning only for local path using object recognition fuzzy logic corresponds to domestic situation. Furthermore, when navigating, the robot uses fuzzy logic for velocity and target angle. The proposed algorithms for path planning has been implemented and tested with pioneer-dxe mobile robot.

  • This note proposes vibration-free motor control through modified LQG/LTR methodology. A conventional LQG/LTR method is a design tool in the frequency domain. However, unlike the conventional one, the proposed one is a time response based design method. This feature is firstly designed by parameterized settling time control gain through the target loop design procedure and the feature is secondly realized by loop transfer recovery. In order to show convergence to the target loop transfer functions, asymptotic behaviors of the open and the closed loop transfer functions are shown. At the conclusion, it is verified that the proposed method is robustly stable to parametric uncertainties through ${\mu}$-plot.

  • The effective feature extraction method for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) detection is proposed and verified in this paper. The UAV engine sound is harmonic complex tone whose frequency ratio is integer and its variation is continuous in time. Using these characteristic, we propose the feature vector composed of a mean and standard deviation of difference value between fundamental frequency with 1st overtone as well as mean variation of their frequency. It was revealed by simulation that the suggested feature vector has excellent discrimination in target signal identification from various interfering signals including frequency variation with time. By comparing Fisher scores, three features based on frequency show outstanding discrimination of measured UAV signals with low signal to noise ratio (SNR). Detection performance with simulated interference signal is compared by MFCC by using ELM classifier and the suggested feature vector shows 37.6% of performance improvement As the SNR increases with time, the proposed feature can detect the target signal ahead of MFCC that needs 4.5 dB higher signal power to detect the target.
