  • The series and parallel connection is essential for increasing power ratings of resistive type for fault current limiters. To increase voltage class, components are connected in series and to increase current level to the nominal value, they are connected in parallel. There are two ways to connect components in series and parallel. First, connected in series and then the module connects to the parallel. Second, connected in parallel and the module connects to the series. We have studied for the two ways. In this paper, we particularly investigated way to connect components in parallel first This way has the advantage of inducing effective simultaneous quench without any other devices, for example, the thing which is inducing magnetic field to the limiting and shunt resistors. And also we studied for the endurance of component which is patterned to the bi-spiral for prospective fault current. It is very important to understand this, because SFCL will use as the only device to decrease burden of circuit breaker. As experimental results, limiting component patterned to bi-spiral endures fault current up to 30kA and it works well, in parallel to series connection,

  • The Active Superconducting Current Controller (ASCC) is a new type of Superconducting Fault Current Limiters (SFCL) which can limit the fault current in different modes. It also has the particular abilities of compensating active and reactive powers for electrical networks. In this paper, it is confirmed that the performance of ASCC in different operating modes introduces a limiting impedance in series with the network which can even degrade the transient stability and the operation of the Over-Current Relays (OCR) employed in a power system. In addition, the model of a three-phase ASCC is simulated, and the effect of descriptive modes on the current limiting level is investigated. For the transient stability analysis, a single machine-infinite bus system is tested, and the effect of operation modes is studied based on an equal area criterion obtaining the critical time and the critical angle. Modifying the setting parameters of OCR such as time dial and pick-up current, the protective coordination is also studied in different operating modes.

  • The conventional method to deal with current transformer (CT) Saturation is over dimensioning of the core so that CTs can carry up to 20 times the rated current without exceeding 10% ratio correction. However, this not only reduces the sensitivity of relays as some errors may still be present in the secondary current when a severe fault occurs, but also increases the CT size. This paper presents an algorithm for compensating the distorted secondary current of iron-cored CTs under CT saturation using the magnetization (flux-current : .lambda.-i) curve and its performance is examined for fault currents encountered on a typical 345[kV] Korean transmission system, under a variety of different system and fault conditions. In addition, the results of hardware implementation of the algorithm using a TMS320C10 digital signal processor are also presented. The proposed algorithm can improve the sensitivity of relays to low level internal faults, maximize the stability of relays for external faults, and reduce the required CT core cross-section significantly. • A novel open-circuit fault diagnosis method for 3-phase 4-wire 3-level active power filters based on voltage error correlation is proposed in this paper. This method is based on observing the output pole voltage error of the active power filter through two kinds of algorithms. One algorithm is a voltage error analytical algorithm, which derives four output voltage error analytic expressions through the pulse state, current value and dc bus voltage, respectively, assuming that all of the IGBTs of a certain phase come to an OC fault. The other algorithm is a current circuit equation algorithm, which calculates the real-time output voltage error through basic circuit theory. A correlation is introduced to measure the similarity of the output voltage errors between the two algorithms, and OC faults are located by the maximum of the correlations. A FPGA has been chosen to implement the proposed method due to its fast prototyping. Simulation and experimental results are presented to show the performance of the proposed OC fault diagnosis method.

  • An advanced superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) using $high-T_c$ superconducting (HTS) wire has been developed. The SFCL has a non-inductively wound magnet for reducing loss in normal state. Two types of non-inductively wound magnets, the solenoid type and the pancake type, were designed and manufactured by using Bi-2223 wire in this research. Short-circuit tests of the magnets were performed in sub-cooled $LN_2$ cooling system of 65 K. The magnets are thermally more stable and have a higher critical current in 65 K sub-cooled $LN_2$ cooling system than in 77 K saturated one. Because the resistivity of matrix at 65 K is lower than the resistivity at 77 K, the magnets generate a small resistance to reduce the fault current when the quench occurs. The magnets could limit the fault current to low current level with such a small resistance. The current limiting characteristic of the magnets was analyzed from the test result. The solenoid type was wound in parallel to make it non-inductive. The pancake type was also connected in parallel to be compared with the solenoid type in the same condition. The solenoid type was found to have a good thermal stability compared with the pancake type. It also had as large resistance as the pancake type to limit the fault current in sub-cooled $LN_2$ cooling system.

  • This study is concerned with the optimal design of DC reactor type high-Tc superconducting fault current limiter(SFCL) by Newton method. What should be first thought over in developing SFCL is the condition in which the cost function is minimized under given constraints. So, this condition is supposed to be the values corresponding to the variables the cost function counts on. In this paper, we got the result for the SFCL available at the level of 6.6kV-200A by means of simulation.

  • The current limiting characteristics of the flux-lock type superconducting fault current limiters(SFCLs) were investigated. The flux-lock type SFCL consists of a flux-lock reactor and high-T_c superconducting (HTSC) element. In this SFCL the initial limiting current level can be controlled by adjusting the inductances of two coils. In this paper, the operational characteristics of the flux-lock type SPCL were analyzed and the current Limiting characteristics of it were investigated through the experiments.

  • Recently, there is greater demand for stable supply of electric power as higher level of our living. It becomes the important problem that the cause of fault in power system is found out in early stage, if once it occurs. In this respect, accurate classification of arcing faults in power systems is vitally important. This paper presents a new classification method for arcing faults in power system. To obtain data of various faults including high impedance fault(HIF) and low impedance fault(LIF), HIF model with the ZnO arrester is adopted and implemented within the overall transmission system model based on the electromagnetic transients program(EMTP). Results of phase plane trajectory if Clarke modal transformation using postfault current and voltage are utilized to classify types of arcing faults. The performance of the proposed method is tested on a typical 154 kV korean transmission system under various fault conditions. As can be seen from results, phase plane trajectory of postfault current should be combined with that of o component from Clarke modal transformation to give reliability of clear fault classification. Thus the proposed method can classify arcing faults including LIFs and HIFs accurately in power systems.

  • Wind farm paralleled with electric power network can supply the power into a power network not only the normal conditions, but also the fault conditions of distribution network. If the fault happened in the power line with wind farm, the fault current level measured in a relaying point might be lower than that of distribution network without wind turbine generator. Consequently, it is difficult to detect the fault happened in the distribution network connected with wind generator. This paper describes the influence of wind turbine generator on the protective relaying system for detecting the fault occurred in a power line network. Simulation results shows that the fault current depends on the fault impedance, location, and the capacity of wind farm and distribution network load.

  • Quench behavior of resistive superconducting fault current limiters (SFCLS) with various pattern shapes was investigated. The pattern shapes employed were meander, bi-spiral, and spital shapes of identical line width, gap and margin. SFCLS were fabricated from YBCO thin films grown on two-inch diameter Al$_2$O$_3$ substrates under the same conditions. The total length of current limiting paths was the shortest at the spital shape due to its larger useless space. Inductance component of SFCLs with the spiral shape was around two times as high as those of other two shapes. This is not desirable since impedance characteristics of existing power systems can be changed. Resistance rise of current limiting elements was low at a spiral shape before the whole quench completion, which may act as a disadvantage for simultaneous quench in serial connection between current limiting elements, but the temperature tended to have similar values at higher voltages. On the other hand, hi-spital shape was severe at insulation level between current limiting lines. When these aspects were considered, we concluded that a meander shape was appropriate to design for a resistive SFCL based on thin films except the concentration of electric field at edge areas of strip lines.
