Performance evaluation on Fault Current Controller System for the Applications of Smart Grid

  • This paper presents simulation and small-scale experimental tests of a fault current controller. Smart fault controller as proposed and proven conceptually in our previous work is promising technology for the smart power grid where distributed and even stochastic generation sources are prevalent and grid operations are more dynamic. Existing protection schemes simply limiting the fault current to the pre-determined set values may not show best performance and even lead to coordination failures, potentially leading to catastrophic failure. Thus, this paper designs fault current controller with a full bridge thyristor rectifier, embedding a superconducting coil for which the controller is electrically invisible during normal operation because the loss due to the coil is near-zero. When a fault occurs and the resulting current through the superconducting coil exceeds a certain value set intelligently based on the current operating condition of the grid, the magnitude of the fault current is controlled to this desired value by adjusting the firing angles of thyristors such that the overall system integrity is successfully maintained. Detailed time-domain simulations are performed and lab-scale testing circuits are built to demonstrate the desired functionality and efficacy of the proposed fault current controller.

  • A more reliable algorithm for detecting a high impedance fault (HIF) requires fault currents at the relaying point containing information of load condition as well as HIF characteristics. This paper presents a modeling method of an HIF in a distribution system using EMTP. From the voltage and current waveforms of HIF experiment, the voltage-current characteristic is obtained and then piecewise linearized. The proposed method gets several points on the linearized voltage-current curve and then represents nonlinearity as piecewise linear resistances using Transient Analysis of Control Systems (TACS) in EMTP. Thus, an HIF is represented as a voltage source in the first and third quadrants of voltage-current plane. The method is implemented in EMTP and thus the voltage and current at the relaying point can be obtained when an HIF occurs. In this paper, an HIF was simulated on various load conditions and fault conditions in 22.9 [kV] distribution systems.

  • In this paper, the risk of electric shock is analyzed through analysis for characterization of potential distribution analysis and ground fault current analysis near the area where there are occurred a ground fault at electric vehicle wireless charging system using 20kHz. Studies for electric vehicle wireless charging system are in the works for development of efficiency increase, pickup shape design and communication module as a fundamental research step. But the research related to electrical safety and is still scarce state so that more studies are necessary to commercialize. As a result of analysis, it is verified that induced voltage is arisen more up to 45V near the a area of accident during ground fault and fault current has been maintained continuously without clearing fault condition by operating characteristics for circuit breaker and inverter.

  • 누전, 아크 그리고 과부하로 인한 전기화재를 탐지하고 제어할 수 있는 시스템보드(system- on-board)를 구현하였다. 이를 위하여 화재방지제어 시스템 IC를 사용하였으며, 누설전류 검출을 위한 GF(ground fault)신호 검출회로, 아크(arc fault)신호 검출회로, 그리고 과전류가 발생할 경우 입력전압을 제어할 수 있는 과부하신호 검출회로를 설계하였다. GF신호 검출회로와 아크신호 검출회로는 누설전류와 아크신호에 각각 잘 동작하였으며, 과부하(overload) 신호 검출회로는 노이즈나 부하변동에 따른 오동작 없이 과부하시에만 동작함을 확인하였다.

  • This study deals with the optimal design of a DC reactor type high-Tc superconducting fault current limiter(SFCL). The condition in which the cost function is minimized under given constraints is one of the things to be first considered in developing SFCLS. This condition is a group of the values corresponding to the variables the cost function depends on. In this paper, the length of tape was taken as a dependent variable, the inductance of DC reactor and the turns ratio of magnetic core reactors as independent variables. For the SFCL available at the level of 6.6kV-200A, we examined 4 cases; at the fault times of 80msec, 50msec, 30msec and 10msec. Since thyristors would be utilized instead of diodes, we chose the result at 10msec as the basic data. Considering safety factor 30%, our optimal design was decided to be the inductance 570mH, the critical current over 620A, the turns ratio 0.89 and the fault time within 20msec.

  • For the application of superconducting fault current limiters(SFCLs) to the protection system, quench recovery characteristics of Au/YBCO thin film were investigated. The Au/YBCO thin film was designed as a SFCL element with a bi-spiral pattern. The SFCL element limited the fault current successfully. For the analysis of the recovery to superconducting state, we measured resistance variation of the SFCL element after the quench. In addition, in order to investigate the dependence of quench characteristics of SFCL on the $LN_2$ cooling condition, we measured the recovery time under a pressure of 1, 2 and 3 atm. As the results, the recovery time increased in proportion to the duration of the fault currents. In the sub-cooled condition, while the quench development was exactly the same, the recovery time was shortened as the pressure increased.

  • DGA is one of the most recent techniques developed to diagnose the fault condition on oil filled insulation transformers. There are more than 6 known different methods of DGA fault interpretation technique and so there is the likelihood that they may vary in their interpretations. A series of combined interpretation methods that can determine the power transformer condition faults in one assessment is therefore needed. This paper presents a computer program- based system developed to combine four DGA assessment techniques; Rogers Ratio Method, IEC Basic Ratio Method, Duval Triangle method and Key Gas Method. An easy to use Graphic User Interface was designed to give a visual display of the four techniques. The result shows that this assessment method can increase the accuracy of DGA methods by up to 20% and the no prediction result had been reduced down to 0%.

Current and voltage loading tests off resistive SFCL

  • We have performed the current and voltage loading tests of resistive superconducting fault current limiters (SFCLS) based on $YBa_2$$Cu_3$$O_{7}$(YBCO) films with the diameter of 2 inch. The SFCL consists of meander-type YBCO stripes covered with 200 nm Au layer grown in situ for current shunt and heat dispersion at hot spots. The minimum quench current of an SFCL unit was about 25 Apeak. Seven SFCL units were connected in parallel fur the current load ing tests at power source of 100 $V_{rms}$ $/2,000A_{rms}$. This SFCL units had maximum limiting current of 170 Apeak during the fault instant and then successfully controlled the fault current below 100 Apeak within 1~2 msec after short circuit. Increased short current also reduced the quench completion time with little change of current limiting characterization. We connected six SFCL units in series fur the voltage loading tests at power source of $1,200 V_{rms}$/170 $A_{rms}$ at this time. The shunt resistors were inserted into each SFCL unit to eliminate power imbalance originated from serial connection of SFCL units. Each SFCL unit was quenched simultaneously during the fault condition. The current increased up to 40 $A_{peak}$ and decreased to 14 $A_{peak}$ after 3 cycles. Quench was completed within 1 msec after the fault. We confirmed operating characteristics of 140 kVA($120 A_{rms}$ $\times$ 1,200 $V_{rms}$) SFCL and presented the manufacturing possibility of 3.3 kV SFCL using 4 inch YBCO films.BCO films.lms.

12 kVA급 BSCCO 한류소자 제작 및 특성 실험 (Fabrication and fault test of 12 kVA class BSCCO SFCL element)

  • For the development of superconducting fault current limiters(SFCLs) having large current capacity, we fabricated an SFCL element that consists of Bi-2212 superconductor and Cu-Ni alloy tubes. First, Ag was plated on the surface of the Bi-2212 for the enhancement of soldering process. On the Ag-plated Bi-2212 tube, a Cu-Ni alloy tube was soldered using optimized solders and soldering conditions. The BSCCO/Cu-Ni composite was processed mechanically to have a helical shape for the improvement of the SFCL characteristics. The total current path of the SFCL element was 1330 mm long with 12 turns, and had critical current of 340 A at 77 K. Finally, we carried out the fault test using the fabricated SFCL element. It showed successful current limiting performance under the fault condition of 50 $V_{rms}$ and 5.5 kA. From the results, the rated voltage of the SFCL element was decided to be 0.4 V/cm, and the power capacity was 12 kVA at 77 K. The fabrication process of the SFCL and the fault test results will be presented.

차폐유도형 고온초전도 전류제한기의 설계 및 특성시뮬레이션 (The Simulation on the Design and the Characteristic of Shielded Inductive $High-T_c$ Superconducting Fault Current Limiter)

  • In this paper, the characteristics of the shielded inductive superconducting fault current limiter(FCL) were simulated and analyzed. After determining parameters fo design for superconducting tube, iron core and primary coil, simple power system composed of shielded inductive FCL was simulated by the numerical analysis. The currents flowing under the fault condition could be limited below 50 A successfully. It was suggested that as the important factors of operational characteristics, the turns of primary coil and size of iron core play a major role for whether the shielded inductive SCFCL operated as inductive type or resistive type FCL.
