  • In this paper, we investigated the fault current limiting characteristic of flux-lock type High-Tc superconducting fault current limiter(HTSC-FCL), which is comprised of a flux-lock reactor and an external magnetic field coil covering the HTSC element In this HTSC-FCL, the initial limiting current level can be controlled by adjusting the inductance of the each coil. Furthermore, the fault current limiting characteristics of HTSC-FCL can be improved by applying 'the external magnetic field into the HTSC element We performed the computer simulation by numerical analysis about the flux-lock type HTSC-FCL and compared the results of experiment with simulation ones. We can obtain the same results from both the computer simulation and the experiment except for the time immediately after fault occurs.

  • To protect the power systems from fault current, the rated protective equipment should be installed. However growth of power system scale and concentration of loads caused the large fault current in power transmission system and distribution system. And capacities of installed protective equipment have been exceeded the due to increase of fault current. This increase is not temporary phenomenon but will be steadily as long as the industry develops. The power system need a counter measurement for safety, so superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) has been received attention as an effective solutions to reduce the fault current. For the above reasons various type SFCL is studied recently. In this paper, the operational characteristics and power burden of trigger type SFCL is studied. The trigger type SFCL has been used for real system research in many countries. And another trigger type SFCL (double quench trigger type SFCL) is also studied. For this paper, short circuit test is performed.

  • In order to anticipate gradual increase of fault current in electric power systems, current limiting technology and current limiting device has been investigated for a long time. But the commercial use of current limiting device was delayed due to the lack of effective method to insert impedance to the elective power systems without loss and surplus defects. However, novel current limiting device, which use superconducting materials, was considered as a dream technology to be applied in a distribution and transmission lines. LG Industrial systems and KERPI started to investigate resistive type superconducting fault current limiters in order to develop 154kV fault current limiters and this year, we succeed to test 3 phase 6.6kV/200A fault current limiters. Based on these achievements, 24kV superconducting fault current limiters will be realized withing 3 years which could be tested in a real fields. In this paper, the developments of fault current limiting module which use YBCO thin films, cryogenic systems, the structure and construction of 3 phase fault current limiters and finally the test results of 6.6kV superconducting fault current limiters will be introduced.

  • With the increasing power demands, size of the fault current in electrical grids is steadily increasing, and it exceeds the breaking capacity of circuit breakers. To effectively cope with these problems, a high-speed interrupter was suggested. The high-speed interrupter provides fault current with a bypass to a fault current limiter in case of accidents and consequently, fault current can be restricted. In this study, behavioral characteristics of high-speed interrupter were analyzed by accident types occurred in a distribution system. When accidents occurred, a and b contact of the high-speed interrupter were turned-off and then, turned-on. Accordingly, fault current flowed to the circuit connected to a current limiting element, and the fault current limiter restricted fault current to within a half-cycle. Nevertheless, the behavior of the high-speed interrupter was slowed down by a switching surge. As a result, fault current was confirmed to be restricted not to within the anticipated half-cycle, but to after a half-cycle. Moreover, the behavioral characteristics of the high-speed interrupter changed not only by accident types, but by behaviors of R, S, and T phases. This was due to the errors in stroke lengths of the high-speed interrupters, which resulted in a slight time discrepancy among three interrupters. In addition, the switching behaviors of the b and a contact were confirmed not to have coincided due to the switching surge; b contact behaved first and a contact followed. because of this, accuracy of stroke length and switching surges through the solenoid suction increases may be necessary to resolve.

  • A DC railway system has low feeder voltage, The remote fault current can be smaller than the current of load starting. So it is important to discriminate between the small fault current and the train starting current. The train starting current increases step by step but the fault current increases all at once. So the type of $\bigtriangleup I\;relay(50F)$ was developed using the different characteristics between the load starting current and the fault current. As for the train starting current, the time constant of train current at each step is much smaller than that of the fault current. To detect faults in U railway systems, an algorithm that is independent of train starting current. This algorithm use the time constant calculated by the method of least squares is presented in this paper.

  • We analysed the operating properties of resistive type superconducting fault current limiters (SFCLs) based on YBCO thin films with a single line-to-ground fault. When a single line-to-ground fault occurred, the short circuit current of a fault phase increased up to about 6 times of transport currents immediately after the fault instant and was effectively limited to the designed current level within 2 ms by the resistance development of the SFCL. The fault currents of the sound phases almost did not change because of their direct grounding system. The unsymmetrical rates of a fault phase were distributed from 6.4 to 1.4. It was found that the unsymmetrical rates of currents were noticeably improved within one cycle after the fault instant. We calculated the zero phase currents for a single line-to-ground fault using the symmetrical component analysis. The positive sequence resistance was reduced remarkably right after the fault but eventually approached the balanced positive resistance component prior to the system fault. This means that the system reaches almost the three-phase symmetrical state in about 60 ㎳ after the fault. The ground currents were almost 3 times of the zero phase mts since most of the fault currents flowed through the grounding line.

  • Kinds of most frequent faults happened on overhead distribution system are the single line-to-ground fault, the line-to-line fault and the two line-to-ground fault. Occasionally, the three line-to-ground fault and the disconnection of a wire are happened in severe conditions. In this study, the single line-to-ground fault, the line-to-line fault, two line-to-ground fault on three-phase four-wire overhead distribution system were experimentally simulated and characteristics of total leakage current of distribution arrester caused by these faults were investigated. Also, the changing aspect of total leakage current of distribution arrester caused by voltage variation was investigated. In a consequence, abnormal voltages caused by voltage variation, the line-to-line fault, the two line-to-ground fault have a little effect on total leakage current of ZnO arrester. But abnormal voltages caused by the single line-to-ground fault have an important effect on total leakage current of ZnO arrester.

  • The resistive superconducting fault current limiters (SFCLs) are very attractive devices for the electric power network. But they have some serious problems when the YBCO thin films were used for the current limiting materials due to the in homogeneities caused by manufacturing process. When the YBCO films have some inhomogeneities, simultaneous quenches are difficult to achieve when the fault current limiting units are connected in series for increasing operating voltage ratings. Magnetic field application is one of the prospective way of inducing simultaneous quenches far the series-connected resistive FCL components. Magnetic field was typically generated by the fault current thorough a coil, which is connected to components of the fault current limiter in series, leaving the problem, which provides significant inductance to the power line and suppresses critical current density of the superconducting components. In this article we investigated the possible application of the protective current transformer (p-CT), which is available current source to the magnetic coil. This system inductively coupled to the circuit, therefore, remarkably reducing impedance to the circuit. The current by the protective current transformer was directly fed to the coil, generating magnetic field large enough to reduce critical current density of the components. This successfully induced simultaneous quenches of the series-connected resistive FCL components.

  • The increase of fault current due to larger power demand has caused the capacity of power machines in grid to increase. To protect the power system effectively from the increased fault current, the superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) have proposed one of several countermeasures. Therefore, to introduce SFCL into power distribution system, the position of SFCL in power distribution system is selected among some cases. Each position changes fault current limiting characteristics and SFCL's requirement. In this paper, the characteristics of limiting fault current according to installed SFCL's location in power distribution system.
