  • An analytical scheme for predicting the crack aspect pattern of materials which contain twin surface cracks was developed. Fatigue tests were performed on twin surface cracked PMMA plate specimens to obtain the interaction factor accounting for the interference effect of adjacent cracks. Here, the interaction factor is defined as the ratio of the stress intensity factor for twin surface cracks to that for a single surface crack. From the analysis of the fatigue test result, the interaction factor was presented as the ninth-order polynomial expression having a function of dimensionless crack spacing ratio. Then the polynomial expression was incorporated into the prediction program of the crack aspect pattern for twin surface cracked materials. And, the interaction effect and the coalescence condition of adjacent cracks were simplified in the newly developed prediction scheme of the crack aspect pattern. The predicted crack growth pattern using the prediction scheme was compared with test data from PMMA specimen. The predicted pattern agreed well with the test data.

  • At this research, we examined probability of light bulb's life span value and prediction on purpose to inquire out the span of repeat velocity as fracture probability by executing the fatigue test, which is considered property of Tungsten filament's thermal fatigue used as an automobile bulb. As a result we can confirm what the most suitable solution is weibull distribution and log normal distribution. Tungsten filament's span gets longer as the fatigue repeat velocity gets shorter And, repeat span is about 15%~40% shorter than sequence life span.

  • Thermal history and thermal stress of alumina specimen, which occured from thermal shock process, were calculated by finite difference method. Stress intensity factor and crack growth in cyclic thermal fatigue were calculated from single thermal shock temperature history and thermal stress. Cyclic thermal life were estimated by bending strength after cyclic thermal shock under critical thermal shock temperature. Calculated stress intensity factor was compared with real experimental thermal fatigue life of specimen. Fatigue life until critical stress intensity factor and real experimental result were comparable.

  • When estimating fatigue crack growth (FCG) life of structures, the use of crack growth models and knowledge of the values of their corresponding parameters are of vital importance. Inconsistency in using models with appropriate parameters can lead to enormous errors in FCG life prediction. In this paper examples are analyzed and compared with test results to show the possible problems, Consistency checks are necessary for avoiding some pitfalls, and also necessary for verifying the correct performance and accuracy of the used computer program.

  • Fatigue strength of concrete is ususlly presented by the Wohler Curve. But, new dimension T(time) from the view point of cyclic creep concept should be considerd. This paper presented four variable F-N-T-R relationship, this four variable relationship simultaneously accounts for the time effect and the effect of load rate. And analytical models are presented to predict fatigue strength of R/C beam strengthened with steel plate and carbon fiber sheet. Also, the correlation between the ratio of stress and the fatigue life was investigated.

  • In case of rough contact fatigue, the accurate calculation of surface tractions is essential to the prediction of crack initiation life. Accurate Surface tractions influencing shear stress amplitude can be obtained by contact analysis based on the morphology of contact surfaces. In this study, to simulate rough contact under sliding condition, gaussian rough surface generated numerically in the previous study was used and to calculate clack initiation life in the substrate, dislocation pileup theory was used.

  • In this research, the fatigue behaviors of carbonitrided Cr-Mo(SCM415) steel are examined. From fatigue test results, we propose a modified fatigue strength evaluation model and modified formulae. That is, we develop improved models fur evaluating and predicting the fatigue strength of carbonitrided SCM415 by modifying specific terms in the Murakami and Endo's model which is the representative fatigue strength evaluation formulae fur high strength steel.

  • The present paper will give some results of the fatigue behavior of typical axi-symmetric forward extrusion die. The extrusion process is analyzed by rigid-plastic FEM and the deformation analysis of extrusion die is conducted by elasto-plastic FEM. To approach the crack problem LEFM (Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics) is introduced. Using special element in order to conside the sigularity of stress/ strain in the vicinity of the crack tip, stress intensity factor and the effective stress intensity factor is calculated. Applying proper fatigue crack propagation criterion such as Paris/Erdogan fatigue law and maximum principal criterion to these data, then, the angle and the direction of fatigue crack propagation is simulated. In result, it is proved that the simulated fatigue crack propagates in the zigzag path along the radial direction and fatigue life of the extrusion die is evaluated by using the computed crack growth rate.

  • Ship structures and aircraft structures are consisted of thin sheet alloy, so it is very important to understand the characteristics of fatigue crack propagation of that material and to establish the data base. The data for fatigue crack propagation behavior scatter very much even under identical experimental conditions with constant loading. The behavior of fatigue crack propagation under regular and irregular cyclic loadings is known to be highly affected by complicated factors such as plastic zone developed at the vicinity of crack tip and reduction of cross sectional area. In this paper, the controlled stress amplitude and overload fatigue crack propagation tests have been conducted to investigate the effect of varying factors such as plastic zone size near the crack tip and area reduction factor (AF) on the fatigue crack propagation behavior A better simulation of fatigue crack propagation behavior is found to be obtainable by using Wheeler and Willenborg models with AF effect.
