Scanning Probe Microscope (SPM) such as Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM) and Atomic Force Microscope (AEM) was shown to be the powerful tool for nano-scale characterization of material surfaces. Using this technique, surface morphology of the cyclically deformed Cu or Cu-Al single crystal was observed. The surface became proportionately rough as the number of cycles increased, but after some number of cycles no further change was observed. Slip steps with the heights of 100 to 200 nm and the widths of 1000 to 2000 nm were prevailing at the stage. The slipped distance of one slip system at the surface was not uniform, and formation of the extrusions or intrusions was assumed to occur such place. By comparing the morphological change caused by crystallographic orientation, strain amplitude, number of cycles or stacking fault energy, some interesting results which help to clarify the basic mechanism of fatigue damage were obtained. Furthermore, applicability of the scanning tunneling microscopy to fatigue damage is discussed.

Quantitative analysis have been carried out on the micro-cracks on the surface and into the depth of unnotched smooth mild steel specimen under cyclic stains by rotating bending fatigue tests. Some of the results are; (1) Cracks initiate at the early stage of fatigue life N$_{I}$/ N$_{f}$=10 to 20%, and propagate during the rest of fatigue life. (2) Coalescence of highly crowded small fatigue cracks of random distribution seems to induce the final fracture at higher stress level. (3) The curves of crack initiation and the equal crack length on the graph of stress versus number of cycles are parallel to the S-N curve. (3) The curves of crack initiation and the equal crack length on the graph of stress versus number of cycles are parallel to the S-N curve. (4) The distributions of micro-surface crack length and depth show the composite Weibull distributions which are approximated to two straight lines separated by the value of transient region between stage I and stage II crack.k.k.

Fatigue life of a Piston for large liquid Petroleum liquid injection(LPLi) bus engines is analyzed considering effects of cooling condition parameters : temperature of cooling water, and heat transfer coefficients at oil gallery and bottom surface of piston head. Temperature of the piston is analyzed with varying cooling conditions Stresses of the piston from two load cases of pressure loading. and pressure and thermal loading are analyzed Fatigue life under repeated peak pressure and thermal cycle is analyzed by the strain-life theory. For the two load cases, required loading cycles for engine life are defined, and loading cycles to failure and partial damages are calculated. Based on the resulting accumulated fatigue usage factors, endurance of the piston is evaluated and effects of varying cooling condition Parameters are discussed.

Railway tracks are repeatedly overstressed and damaged owing to increase in passing tonnage and numerous contact cycles between wheels of train and rails. In order to ensure safe train operation, heat-treated rails are used in addition to regular inspection and maintenance of these rails. Normal rails were treated using ultrasonic nanocrystal surface modification (UNSM) to strengthen the surface of rails. A few changes in surface properties were detected with respect to hardness and compressive residual stress after UNSM treatment. Wear and rolling contact fatigue tests were performed using rails whose surfaces were hardened by UNSM and heat-treated rails. The amount of wear and fatigue life cycles were measured to estimate the effect of UNSM on the rail material. The material of the surfacehardened rail showed improved wear and rolling contact fatigue properties.

This study investigated the durability of the under bar of a car through structural and fatigue analysis. Model 1 had the lowest value among three kinds of models. In the case of the maximum equivalent stress and displacement at structural analysis, model 1 showed the highest durability. Also, models 3 and 2 showed structural durability in order of this value. In the case of fatigue analysis, the maximum fatigue lives of the three models were equal to $2{\times}10^7$cycles. However, model 1 showed the highest value among the three models, as the minimum fatigue life of model 1 becames 92.56 cycles. Also models 3 and 2 showed fatigue durability in order of this value. The maximum possibility of fatigue damage for models1,2,and 3 became 30%. If the results of this study are applied to change the design shape of the under bar of cars, the ride comfort for automobile passengers and car durability can be improved.

A simplified methodology is presented to predict fatigue life and residual strength of composite structures. To avoid excessive amount of tests that are required for model characterization, strength degradation parameter is assumed as function of fatigue life. S-N curve is used to extract fatigue life that is required to characterize the stress levels comprising a randomly-ordered load spectrum. And different stress ratios are handled with Goodman correction approach(fatigue envelope). It is assumed that the residual strength is a function of the number of loading cycles and applied fatigue stress amplitude. And the residual strength distribution after an arbitrary load cycles is represented by two parameter Weibull functions.

Damage mechanisms in bending piezoelectric actuators under electric fatigue loading are addressed in this work with the aid of an acoustic emission (AE) technique. Electric cyclic fatigue tests have been performed up to $10^7$ cycles on the fabricated bending piezoelectric actuators. An applied electric loading range is from -6 kV/cm to +6 kV/cm, which is below the coercive field strength of the PZT ceramic. To confirm the fatigue damage onset and its pathway, the source location and distributions of the AE behavior in terms of count rate and amplitude are analyzed over the fatigue range. It is concluded that electric cyclic loading leads to fatigue damages such as transgranular damages and intergranular cracking in the surface of the PZT ceramic layer, and intergranular cracking even develops into the PZ inner layer, thereby degrading the displacement performance. However, this fatigue damage and cracking do not cause the final failure of the bending piezoelectric actuator loaded up to $10^7$ cycles. Investigations of the AE behavior and the linear AE source location reveal that the onset time of the fatigue damage varies considerably depending on the existence of a glass-epoxy protecting layer.
Prediction of composite fatigue life is not a straightforward matter, depending on various failure modes and their interactions. In this paper, a methodology is presented to predict fatigue life and residual strength of composite materials based on Phenomenological Model(non-linear fatigue damage model). It is assumed that the residual strength is a monotonically decreasing function of the number of loading cycles and applied fatigue stress ratio and the model parameters(strength degradation parameter and fatigue shape parameter) are assumed as function of fatigue life. Then S-N curve is used to extract model parameters that are required to characterize the stress levels comprising a randomly-ordered load spectrum. Different stress ratios (${\sigma}_{min}/{\;}{\sigma}_{max}$) are handled with Goodman correction approach(fatigue envelope) and the residual strength after an arbitrary load cycles is represented by two parameter weibull functions.

Fatigue life Prediction is investigated analytically based on the fatigue modulus concept. Fatigue modulus degradation rate at any fatigue cycle was assumed as a power function of number of fatigue cycles. New stress function describing the relation of initial fatigue modulus and elastic modulus was used to account for material non-linearity at the first cycle. It was assumed that fatigue modulus at failure is proportional to applied stress level. A new fatigue life prediction equation as a function of applied stress is proposed. The prediction was verified experimentally using cross-ply carbon/epoxy laminate (CFRP) tube.
Epoxy-coated reinforcing bars are widely used to protect the corrosion of the reinforcing bars in the RC elements under their in-service environments and external loads. In most field surveys, it was reported that the corrosion resistance of the epoxy-coated reinforcing bars is typically better than the uncoated bars. However, from the experimental tests conducted in the labs, it was reported that, under the same loads, the RC elements with epoxy-coated reinforcing bars had wider cracks than the elements reinforced with the ordinary bars. Although this conclusion may be true considering the bond reduction of the reinforcing bar due to the epoxy coating, the maximum service loads used in the experimental research may be a main reason. To answer these two phenomena, service performance of 15 RC beam specimens with uncoated and epoxy-coated reinforcements under different fatigue loads was experimentally studied. Influences of different coating thicknesses of the reinforcing bars, the fatigue load range and load upper limit as well as fatigue load cycles on the mechanical performance of RC test specimens are discussed. It is concluded that, for the test specimens subjected to the comparatively lower load range and load upper limit, adverse effect on the service performance of test specimens with thicker epoxy-coated reinforcing bars is negligible. With the increments of the coating thickness and the in-service loading level, i.e., fatigue load range, load upper limit and fatigue cycles, the adverse factor resulting from the thicker coating becomes noticeable.
