The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between father's beliefs on child rearing and children's self-perceptions. The subject of this study were comprised of 167 third-grade children (ages 8-10) and their father. To summarize major findings from the analyses : First, a significant difference was found in the degree of father's beliefs about child rearing by number of child , father's education, father's job, level of life, relationship between father and child in independence and by number of child, level of life, relationship between father and child in accommodation. Second, children's self-perception was related to father's education, father's income, father's job, relationship between father and child, child's gender, father's marital satisfaction, father's job. Third, according to the multiple regression analyses for the relationships between father's beliefs about child rearing and children's self perceptions, there was a positive relationship between father's belief's on the creativity, problem-solving skill, accommodation. Father's SES status, relationship between father and child was a positive relationship children's self-perceptions. Father's beliefs on the creativity was a positive relationship children's self-perceptions but father's belief's on the accommodation was a negative relationship children's scholastic performance, behavioral conduct.
This study investigated the prediction of fathering and child's attachment to father based on socio-emotional competence and father-child relationship. Fifty-five toddlers and their parents were assessed by the Generative Fathering Questionnaire (Yee et al., 1999) and the Attachment Security Q Set (Waters, 1987) when the children were 2 years old. After 12 months, the child's socio-emotional competence and father-child relationship were assessed by questionnaire. The child's socio-emotional competence was predicted by father's sense of responsibility for child rearing but not by father's involvement in child rearing. Attachment security partly predicted child's socio-emotional competence and father-child relationship. Among the sub-categories of father-child relationship, warmth and closeness of the relationship was related to child's socio-emotional competence.
The purpose of this study is to systematize the theory of the father-child relationship by analyzing the father's role and father-child interaction. The results of this study are as followings: (1) The oedipal period 3 to 5 years is a critical in development of the father-child relationship. Father absence is assumed in infancy but it is denying because the father participates in Child- rearing activity. (2) The Father's role is symbolized instrumental role traditionally and culturally but it is appropriate that we think the father's role to be androgynous concepts. Instrumental role as well as expressive role is expected to father's role. (3) The role of the father is supplementary mother's role. The father provides economic, emotional support and helps the balanced child- rearing. This indirect role of the father is very important. (4) The father influences child development, and his role is to be sex-role model to contrieve personality internalize moral development. But it is needed more empirical study to clarify father's effects on child development. (5) The amount of time that fathers spend with their children is less than mothers, but it is not assumed that difference of this amount of time do not differently influence to the children. (6) There are much similarity that difference between father-child interaction and mother- child interaction. Qualitative difference in interaction is response style. A responsive style of the father is physical intellectual instructive but mother's is verbal. (7) The effects of the father to a child must be analyzed on dyadic dimension and triadic dimension of family network. In triadic dimension, father influences mother- child relationship, mother to response sensitively, husband-wife relation.
Objective: The purpose of this study is to explain in detail the factors of the father's play interaction that predict children's adaptive emotional regulation. This study examined the moderated mediation effect of a father's rough-and-tough play toward a child's emotional expressiveness and the father's play participation attitude on the child's adaptive emotional regulation. Methods: The study participants included 309 fathers of children aged from 3 to 5 years. Data were analyzed using models of the PROCESS Macro. Results: As a result of this research, the relationship of the father's rough-and-tough play with the child's adaptive emotional regulation was that this was indeed mediated by the child's negative emotional expressiveness. Additionally, the father's responsive and fun play attitude moderated the relationship between the father's rough-and-tough play and the child's adaptive emotional regulation. Further, the father's responsive and fun play attitude according to level had a moderated mediation effect. Conclusion/Implications: These results are meaningful in that they derives a mechanism for why and how a father's rough-and-tough play affects children's adaptive emotional regulation.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to explore socio-demographic factors, personality factors, socio-psychological factors, and relationship factors related to happiness of young children's fathers. Method: Subjects of this study were fathers who had 3, 4 and 5 years old children attending childcare centers. Data were analyzed by SPSS 18.0 program. Results: First, father's subjective well-being was predicted by father's extraversion of personality, job satisfaction, satisfaction of economic status, marital intimacy, and relationship with child. Marital intimacy was the strongest predictor of father's subjective well-being. Second, father's global life satisfaction was associated with occupational status, family monthly income, father's extraversion of personality, satisfaction of economic status, marital intimacy, and relationship with child. Father's global life satisfaction was explained by satisfaction of economic status the most. Third, father's meaning of life was related to father's educational level, father's extraversion of personality, job satisfaction, satisfaction of economic status, marital intimacy, and relationship with child. Father's meaning of life was explained by relationship with child the most. Fourth, father's positive emotion was predicted by father's extraversion of personality, job satisfaction, satisfaction of economic status, marital intimacy, and relationship with child. Extraversion of personality was the strongest predictor for father's positive emotion. Fifth, neuroticism of personality and marital intimacy were related to father's negative emotion, and neuroticism of personality was the strongest predictor for father's negative emotion. Conclusions: The findings of this research provide the fundamental source for increasing father's happiness which can be used to establish the educational programs, counseling, and policy on general public's happiness.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the father-child relationship. The final sample for the data analyses included 83 three-year old children and their lathers. The instrument of study was the 'generative fathering'(by Yee et al, 1999). This measurement consisted two areas, first is the father's involvement in child rearing, and second is the responsibility on child rearing. And the child attachment security was observed through Attachment Q-Set(Waters, 1987) in the child's home. The results were following: 1. The mean of the child's attachment security was .33 and the range of attachment security was from -.07 to .79. 2. Father had higher responsibility on rearing, more involved in the child care. 3. The child's attachment security was predicted by the father's involvement in rearing. The father's responsibility didn't show the relationship with the child's attachment security. Especially among the subcategories of involvement, the activity with child had a significant relation to attachment security. So the father's interaction with child was meaningful for the child to develop the internal working model.
This study examined the relationship between father's participation in child rearing and mother's schild rearing stress. Mothers of 450 4-, 5- and 6-year-old children in six different kindergartens and daycare centers in Seoul and Kyungki-do area completed the Father's Participation in Child Rearing(Kyung Soon Choi, 1993) scale and the Parenting Daily Hassles(Cmic & Greenberg, 1990) scale. Data were analyzed statistically by SPSS. Results show that higher father's participation in child rearing results in lower child rearing stress for mothers. Especially, father's participation in areas of parenting and housework is important factor influence mother's decrease child rearing stress.
The purpose of this study was to develop instruments for measuring paternal child rearing involvement. A second purpose was to investigate the relationship between social competency of child and the father's involvement in child rearing. Fathers' child rearing involvement inventories were administered to 513 5th and 6th grade school students to evaluate children's perceived father's rearing involvement. Assessment of the child's social competency by the mother was by the modified Iowa Social Competency Scale. Data were analyzed by factor analysis, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and canonical correlation. The main results were as follows: (1) There were differences in mean scores between variables on father's child rearing involvement. The mean score of 'day-to-day guidance' was higher than such father's involvement variables as 'family activities', 'household affairs', 'home education'. (2) There was a significant correlation between the social competency of children and father's child rearing involvement. In other words, fathers' child rearing involvement showed significant correlations with 'the capability' and 'leadership' of children. (3) The canonical analysis in two variables-the fathers' child rearing involvement (independent variables) and the children's social competency (dependent variables)-showed that the child variables most highly correlated to the independent variables were 'capability' and 'affection toward parents'. This also indicated that the father variables accounted for about 9.4% of the variation in social competency. In conclusion, the father's child rearing involvement can he recognized as significant variable in predicting the social competency of children.
Objectives: This study aims to investigate the effect of marital relationship on parenting stress among dual- and single-earner families. In particular, this study focuses on the interaction effect of marital relationship and father's child-rearing involvement on the parenting stress. To access factors associated with parenting stress, we included marital satisfaction and marital conflict as the dimensions of marital relationship in this study. Method: We employed data from the 5th wave of the Panel Study of Korean Children(PSKC) data. Our analysis sample consisted of 1,515 parents having at least one child aged under 4 years. Also, this study conducted descriptive statistics and multiple regression analysis. Results: First of all, marital satisfaction and marital conflict were significantly related to parenting stress for both mother and father in dual-earner families. While both indicators were significantly related to parenting stress for father, marital conflict only was a significant predictor for mother in single-earner families. Second, father involvement was a significant predictor for parenting stress for father in both dual- and single-earner families. Third, interaction effects were found between father involvement and marital conflict in the dual-earner families and between father involvement and marital satisfaction in the single-earner families. Conclusions: Based on the results, we recommended programs designed to enhance father's child-rearing involvement such as parenting education and community-based campaign. In addition, we recommended that policy and practice need to identify marital relationship dynamics to promote father's involvement and to reduce marital conflict in both dual- and single-earner families accordingly.
This study compared generative fathering and parenting styles of 90 Korean and 73 American fathers who had a child 3 to 5 years of age. The data were collected through questionnaires on generative fathering, parenting styles, and father-child relationships. Results showed that Korean fathers were more involved in child rearing and perceived their parental responsibilities more strongly than American fathers; American fathers showed authoritative parenting and Korean fathers showed authoritarian parenting styles; among American fathers, the warmth factor contributed to the closeness between father and child; among Korean fathers, the control factor showed a negative relationship with conflict between father and child. These results suggest that the function of father's control in child development might vary by cultural contexts.
