Traffic Control of Ad-hoc Network for Emergency Rescue Evacuation Support (긴급피난지원을 위한 애드혹 통신망에서 트래픽 제어)

  • Recently, natural disasters including earthquakes, tsunamis, floods, and snowstorms, in addition to disasters of human origin such as arson, and acts of terror, have caused numerous injuries and fatalities around the world. We propose an area split clustering control method in multi-hop ah-hoc communication to reduce the amount of data traffic by allowing only parent terminals to exchange and share data for the emergency rescue and evacuation support system.

Demographic Characteristics of Zipeprol-associated Deaths in Korea

  • The abuse of zipeprol, an antitussive agent, was found to be most prevalent among young people in Korea. Because abusers take large doses of this drug for its hallucinogenic effects, fatalities from zipeprol overdose abuse have been on the rise since 1991. Since 1991, a total of 69 zipeprol-related deaths have occurred throughout the nation. A demographic study shows that in ninety six percent of cases involving zipeprol alone, the victims were in their teens and twenties. The mate/female ratio in zipeprol related death was 3.5:1. Most of these zipeprol-associated deaths occurred in the larger cities of Seoul and Inchon. The blood concentration of zipeprol ranged from 0.8 to $38.3{\mu}g/mL $in single drug involved deaths, while zipeprol varied from to 35.3 $0.1{\mu}g/mL $in zipeprol and dextromethorphan victims.

  • Recently, the terror frequently has taken place for unspecified individuals as modern society is complicated. Especially, in case of a subway carriage fire as Daegu subway fire, because smoke spread path usually coincide with passenger's evacuation path, it will reduce visibility and can cause fatalities by asphyxiation. This study performs not only fire simulation with CFAST V6 but also evacuation simulation with EXODUS V4 for the purpose of taking measures for passengers's life safety in subway fire. As a result of evacuation simulation without fire, evacuation times are 36 s for EXODUS V4 and simple hand calculation, and when fire is occurred fire, 101 persons evacuated in 32 s. Therefore, a countermeasure of evacuation in subway carriage fire is required to repression of fire and emergency exit.

  • Korea have 3 kinds of national railway safety target, which are accident fatalities, train accident rate, and passenger fatality per passenger kilometer. Increase of railway passenger and train operator force to setting up new safety target. Current safety target can not reflect train operator's safety activities because it include suicide and trespass related accident, which are hard to control by the operators. In order to reflect to the 2nd National Integrated Railway Safety Plan, new safety targets are roposed in this study.

  • Railway systems are one of the best mass transit systems and many people have prevented incidents/accidents and reduced fatalities remarkably. Especially we have tried analyzing and finding the measures to prevent catastrophic accidents like train collision, derailment and fire because of their severities. It is important to assess the safety performances of railway systems like crash-worthiness analysis, body, derailment affecting factor analysis and so on for reducing and finding out the reasonable causes of disastrous accidents. In this paper the refined top-level system requirements to build-up national infra for assessing railway safety performance and the procedures and methodology for reviewing, verifying and validating infra requirements are explained. Basically the authors have used system engineering processes to analyze and verify the requirements and installation procedures and have tried maximizing the practicality of the various safety assessment systems.

Fall Risk Assessments Based on Postural and Dynamic Stability Using Inertial Measurement Unit

  • Objectives: Slip and fall accidents in the workplace are one of the top causes of work related fatalities and injuries. Previous studies have indicated that fall risk was related to postural and dynamic stability. However, the usage of this theoretical relationship was limited by laboratory based measuring instruments. The current study proposed a new method for stability assessment by use of inertial measurement units (IMUs). Methods: Accelerations at different body parts were recorded by the IMUs. Postural and local dynamic stability was assessed from these measures and compared with that computed from the traditional method. Results: The results demonstrated: 1) significant differences between fall prone and healthy groups in IMU assessed dynamic stability; and 2) better power of discrimination with multi stability index assessed by IMUs. Conclusion: The findings can be utilized in the design of a portable screening or monitoring tool for fall risk assessment in various industrial settings.

  • Construction industry has one of the worst occupational health and safety records amongst all other industries. In this study, we developed a method to compute the severity rate (SR) and measured SR values of apartment construction incidents. The two-year records (1996-1997) from database by the Korea Industrial Safety Corporation (KISCO) were used in the current study. To determine the severity rate (SR), the lost workdays (LW) and the number of injured workers and fatalities (NIW) as well as the number of accidents (NA) were considered. These results appear to indicate that the SR measurement we developed in this study is adequate to estimate the safety of apartment construction environment.

Non-dimensional analysis of cylindrical objects freely dropped into water in two dimensions (2D)

  • The dropped objects are identified as one of the top ten causes of fatalities and serious injuries in the oil and gas industry. It is of importance to understand dynamics of dropped objects under water to accurately predict the motion of dropped objects and protect the underwater structures and facilities from being damaged. In this paper, we study non-dimensionalization of two-dimensional (2D) theory for dropped cylindrical objects. Non-dimensionalization helps to reduce the number of free parameters, identify the relative size of effects of force and moments, and gain a deeper insight of the essential nature of dynamics of dropped cylindrical objects under water. The resulting simulations of dimensionless trajectory confirms that drop angle, trailing edge and drag coefficient have the significant effects on dynamics of trajectories and landing location of dropped cylindrical objects under water.

  • This study aims to provide divers with improved safe diving practices by analyzing reports on scuba diving casualties that recently occured in Korea, Japan and USA. The result of this study should be notified to all the divers in Korea for the purpose of preventing the diving accident. All the data were collected through the diving accident reports of various sourses, which include KUA(Korea Underwater Association) technical committee, the accident statistical data of National Maritime Police Agency, articles of domestic and foreign scuba diving magazine, accident reports of various newspaper, annual report on decompression illness and diving fatalities by DAN(Diver Alert Network), various type of data on diving accident from local as well as national seminars, and medical treatment data of diving accident.

Traffic Safety Recommendation Using Combined Accident and Speeding Data

  • Speed enforcement is one of the major challenges in traffic safety. The increasing number of accidents and fatalities has led governments to respond by implementing an intelligent control system. For example, the Korean government implemented a speed camera system for maintaining road safety. However, many drivers still engage in speeding behavior in blackspot areas where speed cameras are not provided. Therefore, we propose a methodology to analyze the combined accident and speeding data to offer recommendations to maintain traffic safety. We investigate three factors: "section," "existing speed camera location," and "over speeding data." To interpret the results, we used the QGIS tool for visualizing the spatial distribution of the incidents. Finally, we provide four recommendations based on the three aforementioned factors: "investigate with experts," "no action," "install fixed speed cameras," and "deploy mobile speed cameras."
