Influence of Sugar Cane Diets and a High Fibre Commercial Diet on Growth and Carcass Performance in Local Caribbean Pigs

  • The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of a milling by-product diet and two sugar cane diets on the local Creole pig breed (CR). A total of 48 CR pigs (24 females and 24 castrated males) were randomly assigned to four different groups of 12 animals. Pigs were allotted to one of 4 dietary treatments: fed with a control soya-bean meal-corn diet containing 19.1% crude protein (CP) and 15.4 MJ DE/kg (diet 1), with an experimental milling by-product diet (soya-bean meal and wheat by-products) containing 19.4% CP and 13.0 MJ DE/kg (diet 2), with ground cane stalks (GCS) or with fresh sugar cane juice (SCJ). Both GCS and SCJ were supplemented with soya-bean meal complement (400 g/d of a 48.7% CP and 16.1 MJ DE/kg diet) in order to obtain diets 3 and 4, respectively. Pigs were fed close to ad libitum level and had free access to water. All the pigs were slaughtered at 65 kg BW. Between 30 and 65 kg BW, growth performance was significantly (p<0.001) affected by dietary treatments: average daily BW gain was 657, 530, 546 and 200 g/d for diets 1, 2, 4, and 3, respectively. Average daily DM intake was 1.8, 1.9, 2.5 and 1.4 kg/d for diets 1, 2, 4, and 3, respectively. Fat cuts (backfat+leaf fat) and backfat thickness were significantly lower on diet 3 than for other treatments (127 vs. 192, 166 g/kg of left half-carcass weight and 24.6 vs. 39.0, 35.3 mm for diet 3 vs. diets 1 and 4, and diet 2, respectively; p<0.001). The dressing weight was significantly lower on diets 2 (82.7 vs. 84.0%; p<0.001). The entire empty digestive tract (DT) weight was higher on diet 2 (73.1 vs. 66.7 g/kg empty BW). However, stomach and large intestine were more developed on diet 3: 12.8 vs. 9.3 g/100 g empty DT (p<0.001) and 26.4 vs. 23.8 g/100 g empty DT (p<0.05), respectively. In conclusion, this study suggests the CR pig has the ability to reach rather good growth and carcass performance with a well-formulated sugar cane meal and/or with a milling by-product diet refined according to its low requirements.

Effects of Free-range Farming on Carcass and Meat Qualities of Black-feathered Taiwan Native Chicken

  • The effects of free-range farming, compared to a conventional production system, on carcass and meat qualities were studied using black-feathered Taiwan native chickens. Twenty 16-week old females were purchased separately from a free-range farm and a conventional production farm and used for this study. The results showed similarities in the live weight (roughly 2.1 kg), dressing percentage (69%) and meat percentage (19%) of deboned leg quarter. Significant differences (p<0.05) found for the free-range chickens included: a higher percentage of meat for the breast, an increased crude protein content and chewiness value for the breast, but decreased crude fat content and lower hardness and fracturablility values for the leg quarter. Significantly higher L* values were found for the breast and leg meat of conventionally produced chickens, whereas no significant differences were found for WHC and purge loss between the breast and the leg, and between the two production systems as well. Results of sensory evaluation showed a significant preference for leg over breast meat (p<0.05). The scores of all the attributes including aroma, flavor, firmness, tenderness, juiciness and overall acceptability of leg meat from free-range chickens were slightly higher than for conventional chickens, while the reverse was true for breast meat, though no significant difference could be found. Free-range Taiwan native chicken appeared to yield the best of the results, with flavorful yet tender leg meat for higher sensory satisfaction, and high-protein but low-fat breast meat for healthier diet choice.

Effects of Higher Dietary Cation with or without Protected Fat and Niacin on the Milk Yield and Thermoregulatory Ability in Holsteins During Summer Heat Stress (여름철 고온스트레스 기간에 고 양이온 사료와 반추위 보호지방과 나이아신의 추가공급시 착유우의 유생산 및 체온조절에 미치는 영향)

  • The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of dietary cation-anion difference (DCAD) with or without ruminally protected fat and niacin on the thermoregulatory ability, milk yield and milk composition of lactating dairy cows during summer in Korea. Thirty mid-lactating Holstein cows (134±12.4 DIM and 23.4±2.3kg/d of milk yield) were divided into three groups (10 animals/group). Cows were housed in a free-stall barn and were provided with forced- air ventilation (wind velocity = 4 m/s) using 41 cm diameter fans. Diet one was formulated to contain low DCAD (+15 DCAD) while the remaining two diets were higher in DCAD (+30 DCAD). One higher DCAD diet was formulated to contain by-pass fat and the second higher DCAD diet contained the niacin along with by-pass fat. The maximum ambient temperature during July was 28.5℃ which could be seen as a period of mild heat stress. As summer progressed, August was characterized as a severe heat stress condition with maximum ambient temperature (32.4℃) and THI (74.0). Dry matter, crude protein and total digestible nutrients intake was not affected by the DCAD level and supplementation of ruminally protected fat or niacin. Milk production was higher in cows fed diets supplemented with fat and niacin than those fed un-supplemented diet. No difference in milk yield was observed in cows fed diets supplemented with fat or niacin plus fat. Milk fat and rectal temperature were not affected by the DCAD level and supplementation of ruminally protected fat or niacin. However, respiration rate was decreased in cows fed diets supplemented with either fat or fat and niacin compared to those fed. The results of the present study indicated that higher DCAD (+30) and supplementation of fat along with niacin can somehow mitigate the negative effects of heat stress on milk yield and physiology of lactating Holsteins during July and August in Korea. In present study reduced respiration rate and increased milk yield in lactating cows may be attributed to the cooling effect of supplemented fat along with vasodilatory functions of niacin. In Vitro and In Vivo Antioxidant Activity of Aged Ginseng (Panax ginseng)

  • Fresh ginseng roots were aged in an oven at $80^{\circ}C$ for 14 d. The in vitro and in vivo antioxidant activities of this aged ginseng, in comparison with those of the white and red ginsengs, were evaluated. In in vitro antioxidant assays, the ethanolic extracts from aged ginseng showed significantly higher free radical scavenging activity and reducing power than those of the white and red ginsengs. In in vivo antioxidant assays, mice were fed a high fat diet supplemented with white, red, or aged ginseng powders. High fat feeding resulted in a significant increase in lipid peroxidation and a substantial decrease in antioxidant enzymes activities in the animals. However, diet supplementation of ginseng powders, particularly aged ginseng, markedly reduced lipid peroxidation and enhanced the antioxidant enzymes activities. The results illustrate that the aged ginseng has greater in vitro and in vivo antioxidant capacity than the white and red ginsengs. The aged ginseng also showed considerably higher total saponin, phenolic, and flavonoid contents, indicating that its antioxidant capacity may have been partly due to its high levels of antioxidant compounds. This new ginseng product may be useful as a functional food with strong antioxidant potential.

Effects of Jungwan$(CV_{12})$ and Bisu$(BL_{20})$ acupuncture on serum glucose concentration and lipid composition in high fat diet induced diabetic rat (중완(中脘)$(CV_{12})$, 비유(脾兪)$(BL_{20})$ 침자극(鍼刺戟)이 고지방식이(高脂肪食餌)에 의한 당뇨병유발(糖尿病誘發) 흰쥐의 혈청(血淸)Glucose 농도(濃度)와 지질구성(脂質構成)에 미치는 영향(影響))

  • Objective : This study is effects of Jungwan$(CV_{12})$ and Bisu$(BL_{20})$ acupuncture on serum glucose and lipid composition were investigated in high fat diet induced diabetic rat. Results : Plasma glucose, free fatty acids and $\beta-lipoprotein$ concentration showed a high reduction in acupuncture groups compared to those of control group and in the acupuncture groups, Jungwan$(CV_{12})$ acupuncture groups showed a low values than Bisu$(BL_{20})$ acupuncture group. Plasma triglyceride and LDL-cholesterol concentration showed a tendency to decrease in the acupuncture groups, however these values showed no significantly different among acupuncture groups. Total cholesterol concentration showed a high reduction in acupuncture groups and in acupuncture groups, Jungwan$(CV_{12})$ acupuncture groups showed a lower values than Bisu$(BL_{20})$ acupuncture group. HDL-cholesterol concentration showed a higher values in all acupuncture groups than control group, however these values no significantly different in all acupuncture groups.

Effect of acupuncture hanggan and chungwan on serum lipid composition in rat fed high fat diet (행간(行間) 및 중완혈(中脘穴) 침자극(鍼刺戟)이 고지방급여(高脂肪給與) 흰쥐의 혈청지질구성(血淸脂質構成)에 미치는 영향(影響))

  • Effects of Haenggan($LR_2$) and Chungwan ($CV_{12}$) acupuncture on plasma lipid composition were investigated in rat fed high fat diet. Body weight gain showed a tendency to decrease in acupuncture groups and in acupuncture groups, chungwan acupuncture groups showed a lower values than haenggan acupuncture group. Concentrations of plasma triglyceride, free fatty acids showed a decrease in the acupuncture groups. Concentration of plasma lipoprotein showed a tendency to decrease in acupuncture groups, however in the control group and haenggan group, the values showed no significantly different. Plasma glucose concentration showed a low values than control group, in acupuncture groups, the values showed no significantly different. In plasma cholesterol concentration, total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol showed a tendency to decrease in acupuncture groups, however the values of LDL-cholesterol showed no significantly different in the control group and haenggan group. HDL-cholesterol concentration showed no significantly different in all treatment groups.

  • We experimented with several prescriptions in order to find cure and prevention effects for obesity. We fed control group rats a high fat diet and adiministered normal saline for 8weeks. We fed experimental group rats a high fat diet and administered extract of four prescriptions for 8weeks. The results were as follows; 1. The serum total cholesterol level in Bikam-whan and Chekamhanghyuluiyiin-tang group showed a significant decrease in comparison with Control group. 2. The serum triglyceride level in Bikam-whan, Chekamhanghyuluiyiin-tang and Chekambangpungtongseong-san group showed a significant decrease in comparison with Control group. 3. The serum free fatty acid level in Chekamhanghyuluiyiin-tang and Chekambohyulansin-tang group showed a significant decrease in comparison with Control group. 4. The serum total lipid level in Bikam-whan, Chekamhanghyuluiyiin-tang and Chekambohyulansin-tang group showed a significant decrease in comparison with Control group. 5. The serum phospholipid level in Bikam-whan and Chekamhanghyuluiyiin-tang group showed a significant decrease in comparison with Control group. 6. The serum glucose level in Bikam-whan and Chekamhanghyuluiyiin-tang group showed a significant decrease in comparison with Control group. According to the above results, Bikam-whan and Chekamhanghyuluiyiin-tang has shown to be capable of curing and preventing obesty.

Effects of Artemisia iwayomogi Extracts on Antioxidant Enzymes in Rats Administered Benzo($\alpha$) pyrene (쑥 추출물이 Benzo($\alpha$)pyrene을 투여한 흰쥐의 항산화계 효소에 미치는 영향)

  • This study has attempted to examine the effect of Artemisia iwayomogi extract on antioxidant and liver function related enzymes in rats fed high fat diet along with B( )P administration. The activities of the serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase, glutamic pyruvate transaminase and alkaline phosphatase of the rats fed Artemisia iwayomogi ethanol extract were decreased compared to the control. Similarily, the activities of the enzymes were also decreased when the combination of B( )P and ethanol extracts were administered compared to the group adminstered only B( )P. On the other hand, high fat diet increased the above liver function related enzymes. The activities of antioxidant enzymes including GST, catalase and Cu,Zn SOD were significantly increased by feeding the extracts (p<0.01) in addition to the increase of tocopherol contents in the serum. These results suggest that Artemisia iwayomogi extracts can protect cell membranes from the damages by free radicals or hydroperoxides and further may lead to the protection from cancer risks.

Effect of White and Red Panax ginseng Extract on Serum Lipids Level in High-fat-diet Fed Rats (백삼 및 홍삼추출물이 고지방 식이 급여 흰쥐의 혈청 지질 함량에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was carried out to determine the effect of white and red Panak ginseng on body weight gain, feed efficiency, epididymal fat weight, and total serum cholesterol and triglyceride levels in male rats (Wister/ST, 8-week-old, 320 g) fed high fat diet. Rats were divided largely into two groups; normal control (NC) and high-fat-diet (HFD)-fed groups. HFD-fed animals were subdivided into 2 groups; HFD-fed control (FC), and HFD- and ginseng-fed groups. HFD and ginseng fed animals were furthor subdivided into white (WG)- and red ginseng (RG)-treated groups. Ginseng-treated groups received ethanol extract at daily doses of 250, 500, 1,000 mg/kg b.w. for 4 weeks. Consequently, a total of 40 rats were divided into 8 groups. Body weight gain of WG-500 (P<0.05), WG1000 (P<0.01) and RG500 (P<0.05) was significantly lower than that of the NC. Feed efficiency showed same result. The epididymal fat weight of WG500, WG1000 and RG250 was markedly lower (P<0.05) than that in FC. Total serum cholesterol level of WG250, WG500, WG1000 and RG1000 groups were significantly lower (P<0.05) than that of FC. Decrease in the total cholesterol level was most significant in WG100 group. Treatment of ginseng significantly reduced serum free cholesterol and triglyceride levels of the HFD-fed rats irrespective of white or red ginseng. Among the test groups, administration of ginseng at daily dose of 1,000 mg/kg b.w. showed the most potent free cholesterol and triglyceride lowering activity. These results led us to the conclusion that administration of ginseng lowers serum total or free cholesterol and triglyceride levels in HFD-fed animals. Moreover the beneficial effect of white ginseng was slightly more potent than that of the red ginseng.

Hypoglycemic Action of the Fat Soluble Fraction of Panax Ginseng C.A. Meyer in Streptozotocin Induced Diabetic Rats (Streptozotocin 유발 당뇨병 쥐에서의 인삼 지용성분획의 혈당 강하작용)

  • This study was made to understand a hypoglycemic action of the fat soluble fraction of Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer in streptozotocin induced diabetic rats by determining the activities of several enzymes related to carbohydrate and lipid metabolism as well as several blood component levels such as glucose and ketone bodies, and non-esterified fatty acids. Albino rats (Sprague Dawley, 170-200g, 3) were injected once with 70mg streptozotocinhg body weight intraperitoneally and fed with ordinary diet for 7 days, and then the fat soluble fraction (5 mg~20 mg/day/rat) was injected intraperitoneally once a day for three days to rats having high blood glucose level over 340 mg/100ml. After a final injection of the fat soluble fraction, rats u.ere starved for 16 hours followed by the analysis of blood serum and liver enzymes. It was found that increased levels of glucose, ketone bodies and free fatty acids in streptozotocin induced rats were decreased appreciably by administration of the fat soluble fraction. However, the amount of administered fat soluble fraction did not show any significantly different hypoglycemic action. Decreased activities of glucokinase, phosphofructokinase, pyruvate kinase, 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase and acetyl CoA carboxylase of the liver of streptozotocin induced diabetic rats were greatly modified suggesting that a hypoglycemic action of the fat soluble fraction was also appreciable as ginseng saponin fraction. We also compared a hypoglycemic action of the fat soluble fraction prepared from American ginseng and Chinese ginseng with that of Korean pain ginseng. 핀o significant difference of the hypoglycemic activity was observed between the above ginseng fat soluble fractions, suggesting that a study of the fat soluble fraction might be one of the most interesting subjects relating to diabetic hyperglycemia in the near future.
