A Novel Fast and High-Performance Image Quality Assessment Metric using a Simple Laplace Operator (단순 라플라스 연산자를 사용한 새로운 고속 및 고성능 영상 화질 측정 척도)

  • In image processing and computer vision fields, mean squared error (MSE) has popularly been used as an objective metric in image quality optimization problems due to its desirable mathematical properties such as metricability, differentiability and convexity. However, as known that MSE is not highly correlated with perceived visual quality, much effort has been made to develop new image quality assessment (IQA) metrics having both the desirable mathematical properties aforementioned and high prediction performances for subjective visual quality scores. Although recent IQA metrics having the desirable mathematical properties have shown to give some promising results in prediction performance for visual quality scores, they also have high computation complexities. In order to alleviate this problem, we propose a new fast IQA metric using a simple Laplace operator. Since the Laplace operator used in our IQA metric can not only effectively mimic operations of receptive fields in retina for luminance stimulus but also be simply computed, our IQA metric can yield both very fast processing speed and high prediction performance. In order to verify the effectiveness of the proposed IQA metric, our method is compared to some state-of-the-art IQA metrics. The experimental results showed that the proposed IQA metric has the fastest running speed compared the IQA methods except MSE under comparison. Moreover, our IQA metric achieves the best prediction performance for subjective image quality scores among the state-of-the-art IQA metrics under test.

  • Confocal Imaging System is an essential machine for a wide range of inspection wafer. For concurrent and fast acquiring the image data of four channels, the new image acquisition system used the protocol of camera-link standard with the full mode of configuration in interconnection with a frame grabber integrated in a computer, which is popularly used for many cameras, so the programming environment of image processing is optional such as Visual C++, Matlab. In addition, many conventional methods were coordinately used for contribution to build the high quality of images for precise processing analog signals of PhotoMutiplier Tubes(PMTs), accurate control of scanning device, sensitivity of PMTs, and laser source. The prototype of new image acquisition system, could meet the goal of development, it is used in LSCM for high content screening to investigation the processes of elements of living specimens at the same time by simultaneous grab image data on 4 PMTs channels.

Efficient Transformations Between an $n^2$ Pixel Binary Image and a Boundary Code on an $n^3$ Processor Reconfigurable Mesh ($n^3$ 프로세서 재구성가능 메쉬에서 $n^2$ 화소 이진영상과 경계코드간의 효율적인 변환)

  • In this paper, we present efficient reconfigurable mesh algorithms for transforming between a binary image and its corresponding boundary code. These algorithms use $n\timesn\timesn$ processors when the size of the binary image is $n\timesn$. Recent published results show that these transformations can be done in O(1) time using $O(n^4)$ processors. The number of processors used by these algorithms is very large compared to the number of pixels in the image. Here, we present fast transformation algorithms which use $n^3 processors only. the transformation from a houndary code to a binary image takes O(1) time, and the converse transformation takes O(log n) time.

  • This paper realizes a system that recognizes traffic safety signs by applying the principle used for game in reverse. The game used for this paper is one that expresses the shape of temporary objects intended by the maker when the maker sees the numerical image provided on (x, y) coordinates and then expresses it on the mesh. After separating the traffic safety sign image from the input image, the system is realized by outputting the content of the sign into letters by recognizing the forms and colors constituting the sign using the puzzle game above. Our system has fast process time and better rate of recognition than the existing system with black-and-white image processing and recognition without any penciling progress.

Fast Noise Reduction Approach in Multifocal Multiphoton Microscopy Based on Monte-Carlo Simulation

  • The multifocal multiphoton microscopy (MMM) enables high-speed imaging by the concurrent scanning and detection of multiple foci generated by lenslet array or diffractive optical element. The MMM system mainly suffers from crosstalk generated by scattered emission photons that form ghost images among adjacent channels. The ghost image which is a duplicate of the image acquired in sub-images significantly degrades overall image quality. To eliminate the ghost image, the photon reassignment method was established using maximum likelihood estimation. However, this post-processing method generally takes a longer time than image acquisition. In this regard, we propose a novel strategy for rapid noise reduction in the MMM system based upon Monte-Carlo (MC) simulation. Ballistic signal, scattering signal, and scattering noise of each channel are quantified in terms of photon distribution launched in tissue model based on MC simulation. From the analysis of photon distribution, we successfully eliminated the ghost images in the MMM sub-images. If the priori MC simulation under a certain optical condition is established at once, our simple, but robust post-processing technique will continuously provide the noise-reduced images, while significantly reducing the computational cost.

Manipulation of 3D Surface Data within Web-based 3D Geo-Processing

  • An efficient modeling and management of a large amount of surface data for a wide rage of geographic information play an important role in determining the functionality of 3D geographic information system. It has been put many efforts to design and manage an effective way to enhence the manipulation of the data by considering geometry type and data structures. Recently, DEM(Data Elevation Model) and TIN(Triangulated Irregular Network) are used for representing surface data. In this paper, we propose a 3D data processing method. The method utilizes the major properties of DEM and TIN, respectively. Furthermore, by approximating DEM with a TIN of an appropriate resolution, we can support a fast and realistic surface modeling. We implement the structure with the following 4 level stages. The first is an optimal resolution of DEM which represent all of wide range of geographic data. The second is the full resolution DEM which is a subarea of original data generated by user's selection in our implemeatation. The third is the TIN approximation of this data with a proper resolution determined by the relative position with the camera. And the last step is multi-resolution TIN data whose resolution is dynamically decided by considering which direction user take notice currently. Specially, the TIN of the last step is designed for realtime camera navigation. By using the structure we implemented realtime surface clipping, efficient approximation of height field and the locally detailed surface LOD(Level of Detail). We used the initial 10-meter sampling DEM data of Seoul, KOREA and implement the structure to the 3D Virtual GIS based on the Internet.

  • For given 3D geographic data which is usually of DEM(Data Elevation Model) format, we have to represent and manipulate the data in various ways. For example, we have to draw a part of them in drawing canvas. To do this we give users a way of selecting area they want to visualize. And we have to give a base tool for users to select the local area which can be chosen for some geographic operation. Real-Time Face Detection by Estimating the Eye Region Using Neural Network (신경망 기반 눈 영역 추정에 의한 실시간 얼굴 검출 기법)

  • In this paper, we present a fast face detection algorithm by estimating the eye region using neural network. To implement a real time face detection system, it is necessary to reduce search space. We limit the search space just to a few pairs of eye candidates. For the selection of them, we first isolate possible eye regions in the fast and robust way by modified histogram equalization. The eye candidates are paired to form an eye pair and each of the eye pair is estimated how close it is to a true eye pair in two aspects : One is how similar the two eye candidates are in shape and the other is how close each of them is to a true eye image A multi-layer perceptron neural network is used to find the eye candidate region's closeness to the true eye image. Just a few best candidates are then verified by eigenfaces. The experimental results show that this approach is fast and reliable. We achieved 94% detection rate with average 0.1 sec Processing time in Pentium III PC in the experiment on 424 gray scale images from MIT, Yale, and Yonsei databases.

  • Halftonig is a technique to create the appearance of intermideate tone levels by controlling the spatial distribution of the binary pixel values. Recently, many printing devices such as image setter, inkjet printer, laser printer and facsimile, generate image, they require the technique. Ordered dither is achieved comparing the gray scale image to periodic array. This method is fast, but it occurs periodic patterns. Conentional error diffusion generates a good image. But processing speed is very slow and appeares worm artifacts in middle tone scale. To improve it, Bns(Blue noise Screen) is developed based on Gaussian distribution. In this paper, we discribe methods to design BNS based human visual characteristics and to improve blue appearing at edge area of image by USM(using unsharp mask).

  • Recently, the use of color data is growing fast in the area of image processing. To represent full resolution image on a limited output device, image has to be quantized an dithered. So, many dithering techniques are foundd in the printing. In this paper, we propose nonlinear quantization to consider the overlapping phenomena of neighboring printing dots and modified dot diffusion algorithm to compensate the color degradation produced in the quantization process. In the modified dot-diffusion quantization errors to be diffused are adjusted to improve both image blur and color change produced in the dot diffusion. The printed image obtained by the proposed color dithering method has higher visual quality an less color degradation than the images by conventional printing method.
