A numerical analysis of thermal stratification in the upper plenum of the MONJU fast breeder reactor was performed. Calculations were performed for a 1/6 simplified model of the MONJU reactor using the commercial code, CFX-13. To better resolve the geometrically complex upper core structure of the MONJU reactor, the porous media approach was adopted for the simulation. First, a steady state solution was obtained and the transient solutions were then obtained for the turbine trip test conducted in December 1995. The time dependent inlet conditions for the mass flow rate and temperature were provided by JAEA. Good agreement with the experimental data was observed for steady state solution. The numerical solution of the transient analysis shows the formation of thermal stratification within the upper plenum of the reactor vessel during the turbine trip test. The temporal variations of temperature were predicted accurately by the present method in the initial rapid coastdown period (~300 seconds). However, transient numerical solutions show a faster thermal mixing than that observed in the experiment after the initial coastdown period. A nearly homogenization of the temperature field in the upper plenum is predicted after about 900 seconds, which is a much shorter-term thermal stratification than the experimental data indicates. This discrepancy may be due to the shortcoming of the turbulence models available in the CFX-13 code for a natural convection flow with thermal stratification.

In this study, an extinguishment model of a three-dimensional solid propellant rocket was developed by combustion and fast depressurization to control the thrust of a solid rocket. Computational fluid dynamics simulation was carried out to ascertain the change in flow patterns in the combustion chamber and the extinguishment process by using a pintle. An ammonium perchloride was used as the target propellant and the dynamic behavior of its major parameters such as temperature, pressure, and burning rate was predicted using the combustion model. The dynamic behavior of the combustion chamber was confirmed by fast depressurization from an initial pressure of 7 MPa to a final pressure of 2.5 MPa at a depressurization rate of approximately -912 MPa/s.
Reliable prediction of the motion of FOWT (floating offshore wind turbine) and associated mooring line tension is important in both design and operation/monitoring processes. In the present study, a 5MW OC4 semisubmersible wind turbine is numerically modeled, simulated, and analyzed by the open-source numerical tool, OpenFAST and in-house numerical tool, Charm3D-FAST. Another commercial-level program FASTv8-OrcaFlex is also introduced for comparison for selected cases. The three simulation programs solve the same turbine-floater-mooring coupled dynamics in time domain while there exist minor differences in the details of the program. Both the motions and mooring-line tensions are calculated and compared with the DeepCWind 1/50 scale model-testing results. The system identification between the numerical and physical models is checked through the static-offset test and free-decay test. Then the system motions and mooring tensions are systematically compared among the simulated results and measured values. Reasonably good agreements between the simulation and measurement are demonstrated for (i) white-noise random waves, (ii) typical random waves, and (iii) typical random waves with steady wind. Based on the comparison between numerical results and experimental data, the relative importance and role of the differences in the numerical methodologies of those three programs can be observed and interpreted. These comparative-study results may provide a certain confidence level and some insight of potential variability in motion and tension predictions for future FOWT designs and applications.
With all the recent progresses in computer hardware and software technology, the animation of fluids in real-time is still among the most challenging issues of computer graphics. The fluid animation is carried out in two steps - the physical simulation of fluids immediately followed by the visual rendering. The physical simulation is usually accomplished by numerical methods utilizing the particle dynamics equations as well as the fluid mechanics based on the Navier-Stokes equations. Particle dynamics method is usually fast in calculation, but the resulting fluid motion is conditionally unrealistic. The methods using Navier-Stokes equation, on the contrary, yield lifelike fluid motion when properly conditioned, yet the complexity of calculation restrains this method from being used in real-time applications. This article presents a rapid fluid animation method by using the continuum-based fluid mechanics and the enhanced particle dynamics equations. For real-time rendering, pre-integrated volume rendering technique was employed. The proposed method can create realistic fluid effects that can interact with the viewer in action, to be used in computer games, performances, installation arts, virtual reality and many similar multimedia applications.
By applying Systems Simulation technique, this paper aims to investigates the dynamics underlying the coevolution of IT(information technology) and the society. Particularly, a series of basic questions are explored to answer by developing a simulation model for the mechanisms underlying the 'hype curve' ever occurring in the course of technology diffusion into society: First, why hype curve appears in the process of technology and society coevolution. Second, how to enhance the tapering level at the final stage of coevolution. Third, what are the key policy leverages and when is the right time for the policy intervention. As now, inflated expectations regarding ubiquitous information technology (u-IT) are growing very fast and higher than those for the previous technologies, which would result in overshoot followed by collapse of visibility and thus incur tremendous amount of social costs. In this regard implications drawn from this study perhaps give some insights not necessarily to the academics but also to the practitioners and policy makers facing the advent of u-IT as a new emerging horizon of information society.
In this paper we are particularly focusing on the dynamic crack fatigue life of a 25 m length wind turbine blade. The blade consists of composite materiel (glass/epoxy). This work consisted initially to make a theoretical study, the turbine blade is modeled as a Timoshenko rotating beam and the analytical formulation is obtained. After applying boundary condition and loads, we have studied the stress, strain and displacement in order to determine the critical zone, also show the six first modes shapes to the wind turbine blade. Secondly was addressed to study the crack initiation in critical zone which based to finite element to give the results, then follow the evolution of the displacement, strain, stress and first six naturals frequencies a function as crack growth. In the experimental part the laminate plate specimen with two layers is tested under cyclic load in fully reversible tensile at ratio test (R = 0), the fast fracture occur phenomenon and the fatigue life are presented, the fatigue testing exerted in INSTRON 8801 machine. Finally which allows the knowledge their effect on the fatigue life, this residual change of dynamic behavior parameters can be used to predicted a crack size and diagnostic of blade.

Porous materials play a significant role in energy storage and conversion applications such as catalyst support for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell. In particular, hierarchical porous materials with both micropores (poresize, ${\delta}$ < 2 nm) and regularly arranged mesopores (2 nm < ${\delta}$ < 50 nm) are known to greatly enhance the efficiency of catalytic reactions by providing enormous surface area as well as fast mass transport channels for both reactants and products from/to active sites. Although it is generally agreed that the microscopic structure of the porous materials directly affects the performance of these catalytic reactions, neither detailed mechanisms nor fundamental understanding are available at hand. In this study, we propose an atomistic model of hierarchical nanostructured porous carbons (HNPCs) in molecular dynamics simulations. By performing a systematic study, we found that structural features of the HNPC can be independently altered by tuning specific synthesis parameters, while remaining other structures unchanged. In addition, we show some structure-property relations including mechanical and gas transport properties.
Zooplankton dynamics were investigated based on samples collected monthly during the period between November 1998 and October 1999 at 15 stations in Gwangyang and Sachon Bay. Zooplankters were quantitatively collected with horizontal towing through the surface and oblique hauling from the bottom to surface at each station, simultaneously. A total of 88 taxa of zooplankton were distributed and 60 taxa were identified to species. Copepods showed the prosperity in species number of 52 species. Number of taxa occurred in samples hauled obliquely always showed $2\~5$ more species than those captured in the surface except for stations near the Namhae bridge. In waters near Namhae bridge, fast current seemed to mix waters vertically. Seasonally these differences were more distinct in the spring and summer than those in other seasons possibly due to the stratification in warmer seasons. In quantitative aspects, differences between two layers seemed to be obscure. Spatial and temporal variations in species diversity of copepods showed more prosperity in pelagic realm than those in the surface. Our collection carrying out in day time might be one of the important reason to cause these differences in zooplankton dynamics between two layers.

A new reconfigurable model following flight control method based on direct adaptive scheme is presented. Using the timescale separation principle, both the inner-loop and the outer-loop states are controlled simultaneously. For the timescale separation assumption to be satisfied, the inner-loop model dynamics is set to be fast whereas the outer-loop model dynamics is set to be relatively slow. The stability and convergence of the proposed control law is proved by Lyapunov theorem. One of the merits of the proposed reconfigurable controller is that the FDI process and the persistent input excitation are not necessary, which is suitable for the flight control system. To evaluate the reconfiguration performance of the proposed control method, numerical simulation is performed using six degree-of-freedom nonlinear dynamics.
In this paper a typical problem is examined that a light, general aviation airplane, such as Cessna or Navion, in gliding turn flight shows helical-dive phenomenon when pilots try to stop the descent by using elevator only. It is known from pilot's experience that in a certain flight trim it is impossible to recover from helical-dive by using elevator only. From this study it is shown that helical-dive phenomenon is involved with longitudinal/lateral dynamics coupling to airplane's aerodynamics. Also this phenomenon consists of three parts of flight dynamics; first of all, fast longitudinal motion occurs, then is followed by a little slow lateral motion, and finally logitudinal/lateral coupled motion is fully developed.
