  • In order to manage noise reasonably in a special working environment in agriculture, the existing quantitative evaluation and related influencing factors such as exposure period, frequency, work method, use of protective equipment, and age should be considered together. This study aims to identify the factors influencing noise exposure through the 2022 survey data of the Farmers' Occupational Disease Survey (National Accreditation Statistics No. 143003) conducted by the Rural Development Administration. As a result, it was found that full-time farmers, rice paddy farming, farming for three to five months throughout the year, men in their 60s, 30 to 50 years of experience, and farmers are exposed to the most noise. Through this study, high-risk groups for noise exposure were identified, and protection measures need to be prepared for them in the future.

  • Purpose - The Chinese government's policies and funds enable specialized farmers cooperatives to develop vigorously. However, the non-systematic supervision system affects the interests of farmer-members of these cooperatives, which are similar to the Korean NongHyup in many aspects but differ in their supervision systems such as distribution. Therefore, this paper aims to identify the problems of specialized farmers cooperatives, and obtain some insights from NongHyup. Research design, data, and methodology - Data were collected from farmers, the government, and cooperatives in northern China's Shandong Province (the cities of Jinan, Qingdao, Weifang, Linyi, and Heze) through a literature survey, case analysis, and comparative analysis in each city. Results - 1) Specialized farmers cooperatives should establish a transparent regulatory mechanism and be subject to dual supervision from both the Chinese government and farmers. 2) The Chinese government and civil society should offer more support to the cooperatives, and strive to change farmers' backward attitude through education and training. Conclusions - Small cooperatives could merge into large ones and undertake social responsibility through the establishment of labor unions.

  • This study analyzes the factors affecting farmers' recognition and acceptance of sustainable agriculture. To accomplish the objectives of the study a farm survey was conducted using target respondents which were made of the local correspondents and reporters of Korea Rural Economic Institute. The Heckman's model was employed for an empirical analysis on determining the extent of farmers' acceptance of sustainable agriculture. The analysis results show that the more farmers think it is important for Korea to adopt sustainable farming practices, the more they adopt sustainable agriculture. It is also shown that the high incomes farmers earn, the more interest they have in the environment and thus the more likely they are to adopt sustainable agriculture. Based upon the empirical results it is suggested that an adoption of economic incentive instruments, education of sustainable agriculture, research and development of sustainable agriculture technology, and an establishment of sustainable agriculture infrastructure to expand the scale of sustainable agriculture.

  • This paper aims to study regional difference in strawberry farming technology and its causal factors based on the survey of controlled strawberry farmers in three major strawberry cultivating regions, which are Nonsan county of Chungnam Province, Damyang County of Junnam Province and Guchang County of Kyungnam Province. There are differences in variety adoption, packaging and grading method which cause the farming income gap among these regions. Farmers of Guchang County, who adopt new variety Yeobong and packing system, raised highest gross receipts but ranked next to Damyang in terms of net income because of high packing cost. Farmers of Nonsan County earned lowest income because of poor quality and low price in spite of adopting packing cost saving method. Therefore, results of this study shows that successful farming technology depend on whether or not farmers adopt market oriented technology. It is suggested that direction of strawberry farming technology should focus on adopting new varieties which can contribute to increasing farmers' paid price and developing technology of reducing cost such as labor saving and packing machine.

  • Recently, despite the active interest and research on biochar, there is a lack of research on the acceptance intention of farmers, who are technology adopters. Accordingly, the purpose of this study was to conduct a survey of 168 farmers and structurally analyze the factors affecting farmers' intention to accept biochar. The analysis results are as follows. First, promotion conditions and network effects have a positive influence on farmers' intention to accept biochar. Second, the mediating variable, network effect, has a complete mediating effect between performance expectations, social influence, and acceptance intention. This suggests that organizations need to be utilized to spread biochar because network effects increase the explanatory power of acceptance intention.

  • Background: Agricultural work is physically demanding and is associated with a high frequency of musculoskeletal disorders. It is challenging to comprehensively understand the present status of work-related diseases and injuries among farmers in underdeveloped countries. Objects: This study aimed to elucidate the current status of work-related musculoskeletal disorders in local farmers in Tigray, Ethiopia, and identify the agricultural factors associated work-related musculoskeletal pain (AFWMP) and healthy living and healthy behavior factors associated work-related musculoskeletal pain (HFWMP). Methods: The Institute for Poverty Alleviation and International Development at Yonsei University conducted a survey of 126 households in Tigray, Ethiopia in 2014. A total of 116 individuals (73 men, 43 women) representing each household answered the questionnaires. Results: 1) Work-related musculoskeletal pain (WMSP) most commonly occurred when performing heavy lifting and most frequently occurred in the lower back. 2) Age, self-perceived labor intensity, and months of farming work were significantly higher in the pain group than those in the non-pain group. 3) Overall work-related musculoskeletal pain intensity (WPI) showed positive and negative correlations with years of farming experience and self-perceived health status, respectively. 4) In binary logistic regression, the occurrence of WMSP showed significant associations with self-perceived labor intensity. 5) On multiple linear regression analysis, age, months of farming work, and self-perceived health status had a significant impact on overall WPI. Conclusion: The WMSP of farmers in Tigray, Ethiopia was related to the characteristics of farm working and health status. Furthermore, HFWMP and AFWMP were the chief factors affecting the occurrence of WMSP in farmers in Tigray. Therefore, both HFWMP and AFWMP should be considered for clinical health assessments of farmers with WMSP in underdeveloped African countries.

  • This survey was performed to gain basic information for the development of new protective clothing of high acceptability in pesticide splaying among small size farmers. The rate of protective clothing wearing was low during pesticide spray although they understand its necessity. The reason for this low acceptability was related to the heat stress and reduced work efficiency deriving from wearing protective clothing. Instead of wearing they tend to carry out spray work while the ambient temperature is not to high. In the similar context, they rather intend to spray in consideration of weather condition instead of wearing protective clothing in the future. However, they are willing to purchase protective clothing if desirable products are developed: the clothing need to be efficient in both protection and work performance; the fanciness in design is not a requisite. This survey result will provide information necessary for the direction of new protective clothing development.

  • Purpose: This study was carried out to investigate the prevalence and the main factors influencing the farmer's Syndrome in farmers in Korea. Method: A survey questionnaire was completed by 238 farmers who lived in 8 agricultural districts in Seosan City. The data were collected from April 10 to May 5, 2002. Results: The prevalence of the farmer's Syndrome was 42.6%, and its prevalence rate in woman was higher than that in man. The prevalence of the farmers syndrome proportionally increased with advanced age. Variables that were positively correlated with the farmer's syndrome were age, duration of farming, days of resting, and the number of the agricultural chemical's poisoning. On the other hand, variables that were negatively correlated with the farmers syndrome were smoking, sleeping hours, economic condition, and level of educational. In a regression analysis, the factors influencing the farmers syndrome were age, sex, sleeping hours, days of resting, and the number of the agricultural chemical's poisoning, which accounted for 25% of the total variance. Conclusion: Based on these study results, older age and woman gender are the remarkable risk factors influencing the farmer's syndrome. Sleeping hours, days of resting, and the number of the agricultural chemical's poisoning were also the significant attributable variables to the farmers syndrome.
