This study investigates the facility use status of smart farming farmers to improve facility use rate of farmers. To this end, a survey was conducted on smart farming farmers in Jeonnam province, and the main survey contents are as follows: facility use rate, the reasons for low facility use, the perception of the introduction and use of smart farming etc. As a result of the survey, many farmers have introduced smart farming facilities even though they do not have enough use capacity. Thus it is necessary to improve the use capacity of farmers. Second, the average facility use rate of farmers was 65.1%, and 37.5% of respondents did not use even 50% of smart farming facilities. To improve the use rate, education on how to use facilities and continuous consulting support for farmers are needed. And the largest number of farmers perceived the risk like crop damage or facility failure due to poor use of facilities. This means that risk management due to the smart farming facilities is important. Third, farmers answered that rapid and continuous repair service were the most important when using facilities. Thus it is important to foster rear industries such as maintenance companies to stably operate smart farming facilities.
A survey was carried out to understand and analyze the characteristics of the symptoms of musculoskeletal disorders among farmers of pears, grapes, cucumbers, eggplants and various vegetables. One hundred and forty farmers participated in the study. It was found that task characteristics differ according to crops and the gender of the farmers. The fruits farmers mainly assume arm-elevated postures while vegetables farmers mostly take bent-back or squatting postures. The symptoms of musculoskeletal disorders are mostly reported in the low back, shoulder, and knee. Though the rates of symptoms of musculoskeletal disorders were not much different among the crops, the fruits farmers showed relatively higher rate of symptoms in the shoulder and neck than those of other crops. The rate of symptoms of female farmers was higher than that of male farmers, which is the similar results of other studies. The relatively low correlationship between the task characteristics and the rate of symptomes might be caused by the fact that most farmers are involved in various agricultural tasks that are not much different among different crops.
Recently farming succession has become an important topic in agriculture in order to secure agricultural manpower in response to the aging of farming households and declining population. This study investigates farmers and agricultural college students' perception of farming succession in Korea, especially of farming succession to a third party. Farmers and agricultural college students are potential farming transferors and successors, respectively. We surveyed 146 farmers and 95 students who graduated or were studying at the Korea National College of Agriculture and Fisheries. The questions of the survey are largely divided into four categories: 1) the will and scope of farming transfer and succession, 2) the requirements for the successors of farming, 3) the perception on the succession to third-parties, and 4) the farming succession policy. According to the survey results 41.4% of farmers and 46.3% of potential farming successors have willingness to accept a farming succession to a third party. When farming succession was carried out through the Farming Succession Exchange, 46.8% of farmers and 54.7% of successors said they are willing to carry out third-party farming succession. This means that a third-party farming succession could be activated if the reliability issue that may arise during the farming succession is resolved through the Farming Succession Exchange. Other implications for farming succession are suggested at the end of this study.
The Korean government introduced the $6^{th}$ industrialization in the agricultural sector to increase farmers' income and value-added agricultural products. The U.S. government has also supported farmers' efforts to increase their income and value-added products in a similar way even though the $6^{th}$ industrialization is not the usual concept in the U.S. Especially, direct-to-consumer and intermediated marketing is one of the main methods to increase farmers' income and value-added agricultural products in the U.S. The purpose of this paper was to analyze direct-to-consumer and intermediated marketing in the U.S., through a survey and frequency analysis. The results of this study are as follows: First, U.S. farmers have shifted their concern and efforts from direct-to-consumer marketing to intermediated marketing because intermediated marketing may offer higher value-added agricultural products. However, consumers' perception and interest are higher for direct-to-consumer marketing than for intermediated marketing of agricultural products and related services. Consumers also will increase the portion of consumption of agricultural products and related services through direct-to-consumer marketing. This difference between farmers and consumers may cause difficulties in increasing farmers' income and value-added agricultural products in the U.S. Korean farmers may have same problem in the future, even though they have not encountered it yet. Especially, the Korean government needs to develop the capabilities of farmers so that they can solve this problem.
Recently, it is recognized that the increase of return farmers is an important task to revitalize rural areas. There is a growing need to improve the housing environment in rural areas by expanding rental housing supply in order to increase return farmers. The purpose of the study is to forecast the rural rental housing demand based on the questionnaire survey and to suggest the rural rental housing supply in the public sector. The rural rental housing demand consists of demand for rural residents and demand for return farmers. The survey was conducted for rural residents and potential return farmers. The rural rental housing demand was analyzed by using prospect of rural residents and return farmers in the future and the rate of intention to move into rural rental house derived from the survey. In this study, rural rental housing demand which does not take into consideration the rent level and rural rental house demand considering it are presented respectively.
Purpose: The modern IT can give enormous impacts on the agricultural production and consumption. However, farmer's ability to use IT devices has been known as one of the critical factors on success of IT in agriculture. This survey study was performed to evaluate the informatization status of farmers and to draw a strategy to develop and distribute a ubiquitous agricultural information system. Methods: A survey questionnaire with 19 questions on the degree of IT devices such as computers and smartphones and their utilization were developed. The survey was questioned 3 groups of farmers in Gyounggi Province and analyzed statistically by the ${\chi}^2$ test. Results: The order of IT devices distribution were computers, smartphones, smart TVs and tablet PCs in all groups. The ratios of ownerships of the devices are 97.7, 78.6%, 31.4%, 17.8% respectively. The active farmers in this survey showed higher informatization level than that of native and the general farmers. Conclusions: The ubiquitous agricultural information system was judged to be developed for the computer because spread and use of it exceeds the other devices. Also, the information system based on the smartphone could be a complementary way if the rapid of the smartphones continues and proper education on use of the phone is provided.
While agricultural water has been declared free in Korea to ensure access to these limited resource since the year 2000, farmers have however developed lackadaisical behavior towards water saving leading to its scarcity. To overcome this problem, a variety of experience-oriented education model was developed for farmers to promote the adoption of water conservation, and preventive measure against the drought impacts. In this study, farmers' awareness and their attitudinal behavior of agricultural water savings were investigated. The monitoring of water supply structure and the repair facilities in Pohang and Yeongdeok areas were conducted. The field visits and behavioral surveys showed a high degree of over-use and illegal water withdrawals by the farmers due to poor water-saving and management practices. We found that most of the KRC employees strongly admitted the necessity of water-saving education. On the other hand, the farmers showed good interest in the implementation of water-saving awareness through education. Besides this, most farmers agreed to adopt water-saving practices in the fields. Farmers also acknowledged the recklessness of water use was due to the aging of waterways, poor water management, and illegal water consumption. The majority of the farmers responded against imposing the water-use tariffs. However, there was a low response to paying the water-use charge. Aging agricultural facilities and the lack of institutional penalties or incentives were the major obstacles in achieving efficient water-saving. Considering the current drought frequency, urgent water-saving education of farmers was deemed necessary to prepare the farming community against the water shortages. Based on the results of this study, we have to identify the irrigation practices of farmers and provide water-saving education to enforce more efficient use and management of agricultural water.
This research was carried out to get the basic information on the current situation of personal computer utilization for poultry farm management, and the results obtained could be used in developing of the software system for the poultry farm management. Survey method by interview and mail was adopted to carry out the research, and the total number of data used to statistical analyses was k6 poultry farmers. 1. The ratio of the poultry farmers who had the personal computer(P/C) was about 25%, and the most of the layer farmers from age 30 to 40 who manage the flock size 20,000 or above had the P/C. 2. About 70% of the farmers who had P/C have bought the system after 1993, and 83% of those farmers had the P/C-486 or above level system. They bought the P/C with intent to apply it to farm management(39%) and education for children(31%). 3. About 50% of the farmers who had P/C obtained the relevant knowledge for operating computer system by themselves, and the 33% of the P/C-possessed farmers used P/C for word-processor. 4. About 35% of the farmers who had P/C applied their system to analyse the management analyses, and the sarne ratio of the farmers answered that they didn't apply the system to their farm management. 5. About 25% of the farmers who had P/C used package software, and the company which installed the automated cage system offered the software. 6. Most of the farmers considered the computerization of the farm management positively, and they answered that they will apply P/C to their management actively from now on. 7. About 56% of the farmers didn't think that they had sufficient knowledge for operating computer system, and a quarter of them pointed that the difficulty of the buying software for poultry farm management was the most biggest problem to spread out the computerization in the poultry farm. 8. Most of the poultry farmers didn't buy P/C because they didn't have the relevant knowledge for computer system, but they wanted to learn basic knowledge for computer, and they had the intention to apply computer to their management positively. In order to expand the computerization for poultry farm management, appropriate education system for the farmers from age 30 to 40 who manage the flock size 20,000 or above and the development of the software that could be applied to poultry farm management on the spot efficiently should be made.
Purpose - This study was conducted to develop a beekeeping farm management standard checklist. This is essential to increase the competitive power of beekeeping farmers. Checklists in relation to crops and livestock were established by the Rural Development Administration in the 2000s. To date, 60 checklists have been created by crop and livestock experts. However, other farmers outside the 60 checklists are increasing. Therefore, extra development is required for these farmers. This study was conducted to meet farmers' requirements. The special farming dealt with in this study is beekeeping. Such checklists were not developed due to the small number of beekeeping farmers. However, these days, a number of such farmers are emerging. Research design, data, and methodology - Many related experts participated in this study. This study was conducted in four stages. First, a basic outline of beekeeping was created by surveying many kinds of beekeeping experts. The draft of the beekeeping checklist was created by a secondary advisory council. This draft was then sent to 14 beekeeping experts to confirm whether or not it was suitable as a management checklist. For collecting the experts' opinions, a direct visit survey was done through an arranged questionnaire. Additionally, a basic management checklist blueprint was reviewed by many experts. In the third stage, a Delphi survey method was utilized with a special Delphi questionnaire. In this stage, experts who participated in the first and second stages were excluded. As there were uncertain answers among them, a second Delphi survey was done. As a result of this survey, all answers were agreed among them. Results - From the results of this survey, four subjects in the management accomplishment index were determined. These are farming scale, average product per beehive, the sale price of honey (1kg), and the number of bee plates in the beehive. In the case of the management checklist content, five items were determined. These are beekeeping farming facilities, the environment around the farm land and general management, the product management of the beekeeping harvest, the management of the disease and pest, and farming management. This checklist will be utilized for beekeeping farmers to implement in a management situation. Conclusions - These days, the number of beekeeping farmers is increasing. The management checklist for beekeeping farmers will be used to improve their farming situation and marketing. Beekeeping farmers can understand their management by reviewing their checklist. After checking, the situation of management can be analyzed. Farmers can supplement weaknesses with expert advice. This checklist will be used by agricultural technique extension workers for farming management consulting. This checklist has to be complemented by a change in the management of the environment. This checklist will be delivered to beekeeping farmers after a verification survey is done. The result of the checklist score will be utilized for a benchmarking service to be implemented for beekeeping farmers to utilize.
This study was conducted to investigate farmers' satisfaction in organic farming technologies developed by the Rural Development Administration (RDA). The survey targeted farmers who were eco-friendly or interested in eco-friendly agriculture. 70% of the target farmers were doing eco-friendly farming, and the satisfaction rate of the technology developed by the RDA was 3.85 points. The satisfaction of the farmers who participated in demonstration and demonstration of the farming field of the developed technology was 4.00 and the satisfaction level of organic farming instruction manual was 3.95. In addition, 38.4% of the surveyed areas were found to be pest control areas, and the impacts on the satisfaction of the organic cultivation related technology utilization and the satisfaction of the organic cultivation guide were analyzed.
