  • This paper presents an experimental and numerical study on the overall performance and local flow characteristics of sirocco fan in a range hood. Measurement of overall performance for sirocco fans were conducted based on AMCA standard 210. The effects of flow blockages due to the motor inside the fan on the fan performance were investigated by experimentally and numerically and the results were compared with each other. The numerical and experimental results show the inlet flow blockage reduces the performance (ie. fan static pressure, design flow rate, maximum efficiency and free delivery flow rate) of fan. It is found that the blockage makes the flow field highly non-uniform through the blade and cause the efficiency decrement.

  • The aerodynamic performance of axial flow fans for outdoor unit of air-conditioner is investigated by numerical and experimental approaches in this study. The pressure drop and volumetric flow rate are compared each other in several different conditions and fan speeds. It is shown that the predicted fan performances are quite well matched with the experimental results. It is also shown that the curvature of the fan arc and hub height have significant influences on the flow distribution after hub. By the results of this study, it can be suggested that several ways to improve the aerodynamic performance of the axial flow fan can be found using the numerical analysis.

  • In this paper, a numerical study has been carried out to investigate the influence of silencer design variables on the performance of a jet fan. In order to achieve an optimum jet fan design and to explain the interactions between the different geometric configurations in the jet fan, three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics and the Design of Experiments method have been applied. Two geometric variables, i.e., cap size and silencer length, were employed to improve the performance of the jet fan. The objective functions of the jet fan are defined as the effective velocity and total efficiency at the operating condition. Based on the results of computational analyses, the flow characteristics were discussed. The effect of silencer with a specific roughness on the performance was also discussed.

  • In this paper, a successful noise reduction of an axial flow fan for a refrigerator is presented. The vortex sheet generated at the blade tip of fan was suppressed by changing the shape of the tip. The structure of vortex sheet and detailed flow pattern around the fan were studied by two-dimensional LDV(Laser-Doppler Velocimetry). Effective ways to work out the result as mentioned above are to make the tip of the blade varied in thickness and to have elliptical shapes. To seek the optimal value fur the shape of new fan, several cases were examined. Through the application of the methods, the refrigerator became less noisy by 3.8 dB(A) in terms of air-borne noise produced only by the axial flow fan compared to the current one.

  • The objective of the present study was to identify ventilation problems, and also to suggest new axial fan systems for the improvement of IAQ in the underground parking lots. Numerical results for air mean-velocity, local mean age, and sound power level are presented along with some of fan angles. The results showed the influence of airflow patterns on the fan performances installed in the underground parking lots. Discharge air volume is increased with the angle of the blade. And also, the main factors affecting the noise of the ventilation fan was found to be a rotational speed.

  • To ventilate indoor spaces, axial single-blade fans are widely used in various areas, such as schools, houses, offices, and restaurants. Recently, axial single-blade fans were developed to realize energy efficiency and noise reduction improvements. Here, an experimental study of the air flow characteristics of an axial dual-blade fan is conducted. The characteristics of the axial dual-blade fan were tested via an air flow analysis and with prototypes. For the performance of the fan, the flow rate, power consumption, and noise were evaluated. The result showed that the axial dual-blade fan uses less power and produces less noise in comparison with an axial single-blade fan.

  • The flow field in road tunnel is influenced by some facts such as piston effect of vehicle's move, operation of ventilation facilities, natural wind and buoyancy effect of fire plume. Among those, jet fan is one of main ventilation facilities especially in longitudinal ventilation system of tunnel. In this study to analyze tunnel flow induced by operation of jet fan, numerical simulation has been carried out. The velocity distributions and streamlines in tunnel are examined to consider the three-dimensional characteristics of tunnel flow caused by jet fan.

  • Energy saving electric fan heater that uses driving part as heating part is different from general fan heater. As it uses energy that drives rotor and generate heat at the same coil. it is simpler and cheaper than fan heater. In this study, shaded-pole motor that is low cost and simple in spite of low efficiency was used for th fan heater.
