  • To understand whether Falling, which is one of the causes of injuries, occurs, various behavior recognition research is proceeding. However, in most research recognize only the fact that Falling has occurred and provide the service. As well as the occurrence of the Falling, the risk varies greatly based on the type of Falling and the situation before and after the Falling. Therefore, when Falling occurs, it is necessary to infer the user's current situation and provide appropriate services. In this paper, we propose to base on Fog Computing and Cloud Computing to design Context-aware System using analysis of behavior data and process sensor data in real-time. This system solved the problem of increase latency and server overload due to large capacity sensor data.

  • According to the data released by Korea Occupational Safety & Health Agency, construction workers suffering from falling disaster have been increasing continuously for the last five years, and in fact, small and medium construction companies' falling disaster forms over 97% of all every year. This means that to reduce falling disaster significantly, it is needed to get rid of disaster taking place in small and medium construction companies. Here, this study aims to analyze various causes of falling disaster in small and medium construction companies, examine how those factors are correlated with one another, and suggest how to manage the risk of falling disaster effectively. According to the study results, main factors influencing falling disaster in small and medium construction companies are found as follows: Situational Awareness/Risk Perception, Fatigue/Alertness, Communications, Equipment/Facilities, and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in the Direct Level, Management/Supervision, Education/Training, and Planning in the Organizational Level, and Management's Commitment to Safety in the Policy Level.

  • Purpose: To investigate the abilities to act and fear of falling in home-dwelling elderly. Methods: This study interviewed 351 home-dwelling elders residing in Seoul and Gyonggi-do using a Survey of Activities and Fear of Falling in the Elderly. Results: Of the 351 subjects, 203(57.8%) had activity restrictions. The main three activities that the subjects could not perform were going out when it is slippy, reaching something overhead and walking crowded places outside. According to general characteristics, performable activities were significantly fewer in subjects perceiving that their health status was low that those perceiving that their health status was high. On a scale of 3 points for fear of falling, the average score of the subjects was 1.46. The highest score of fear of falling was 2.62 for the activity of going out when it is slippery, next 1.87 for the activity of reaching something overhead. There was a significant inverse relationship between subjects' abilities to act and fear of falling. Conclusions: The significant variables associated with fear of falling were gender(female), educational background, economic status (low-income), and experience of falls during the last one year. Thus further study is necessary, focused on the vulnerable population in order to prevent falls and to reduce fear of falling.

  • Falling liquid plays a role in a wide variety of naturally occurring phenomena as well as in the operation of industrial process equipment where heat and mass transfer take place. In such cases, it is required that the falling film should spread widely on the surface forming thin liquid film to enlarge contact surface. An addition of surface active agent to a falling liquid film affects the flow characteristics of the falling film. In this study the heat transfer characteristics for a falling liquid film has been investigated by an addition of the surface active agents. The falling liquid film was formed on a vertical flat plate. As the mass flow rate of liquid falling film is increased, the wetted area is a little increased while the heat transfer rate as well as heat transfer coefficient is significantly increased. It is also found that both wetted area and heat transfer rate is substantially increased while heat transfer coefficient is a little increased with an increase in the surfactant concentration at a given mass flow rate.

  • In this study, we developed a falling recognition system to transmit SMS data through CDMA communication using a three axises acceleration sensor and a two axises gyro sensor. 5 healthy men were selected into a control group, and the fall recognition system using the three axises acceleration sensor and the two axises gyro sensor was devised to conduct an experiment. The system was attached to the upper of their sternum. According to the experiment protocol, the experiment was carried out 3 times repeatedly divided into 3 specific protocols: falling during gait, falling in stopped state, and falling in everyday life. Data obtained in the falling recognition system and LabVIEW 8.5 were used to decide if falling corresponds to that regulated in an analysis program applying an algorithm proposed in this study. In addition, results from falling recognition were transmitted to designated cellular phone in a SMS (Shot Message Service) form. These research results show that an erroneous detection rate of falling reached 19% in applying an acceleration signal only; 6% in applying an angular velocity; and 2% in applying a proposed algorithm. Such finding suggests that an erroneous detection rate of falling is improved when the proposed algorithm is applied incorporated with acceleration and angular velocity. In this study therefore, we proposed that a falling recognition system implemented in this study can make a contribution to the recognition of falling of the aged or the disabled.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship among fear of falling, pain, anxiety and depression, and to identify influencing factors in elderly women patients with degenerative arthritis living in the community. Method: The subjects of this study were 297 elderly women patients with degenerative arthritis. Data was collected by personal interviews using questionnaires. Data was analyzed by the SPSS(version 12.0) computer program, and it included descriptive statistics, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, and Stepwise multiple regression. Results: There was a significant difference (p= .000) in fear of falling according to the level of pain, anxiety, and depression. There was a significant positive correlation among fear of falling, pain, anxiety and depression. Depression, pain, number of medication, age, and anxiety showed significant predictors (43.5%) for fear of falling. Conclusion: This study suggested that thoroughly assessing predictors making an impact on fear of falling in the initial nursing assessment is the most important for falls prevention of elderly women patients with degenerative arthritis in the community.

  • This study investigates the simultanceous heat and mass transfer between a falling desiccant film and air in cross flow at the interface. The application of this work is the optimization of falling film evaporators for use in potential hybrid air conditioning systems. The specific geometry considered is liquid TEG films falling along the vertical cooled surfaces of a channel with air in cross flow. The equations to describe the coupled heat and mass transfer between a falling desiccant film and air in cross flow for a falling film evaporator have been presented and solved numerically. The effects of important design and operating variables on the evaporator performance predicted by the parametric numerical analysis and suggestions for performance improvements of the evaporator are presented.

  • Various falling prevention systems with vertical guided rail have been supplied in order to prevent falling accidents and acquire the long life and cost down for the maintenance. Almost the imported system is composed of a guided rail and the comfort components. It has the mechanism that cannot be dismounted from the guided rail at the accident site. Thus, the aim of this study is to develop a falling prevent system that has a direct dismounting function, which can release easily from the falling accident point. This system has a high durability and robust. And the cost efficiency of the system and safety for workers also are improved remarkably. From the results, we showed the proposed new falling system is sufficiently safety and satisfies the KOSHA regulation through the numerical stress analysis. Also it is expected as the useful and effective safety device for workers.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between a experience of falling, fear of falling, depression, and perceived health status in urban areas. Methods: After obtaining Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval, a one-time, face-to-face, and private interview was conducted with each participant who was eligible and agreed to participate in this study from May 2007 to August 2007 by trained graduate-level nursing students. The questionnaires consisted of Fall Efficacy Scale, K-GDS, and SF-36. The collected data were analyzed with SPSS/PC 12.0 program, which was used for frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, t-test, and hierarchical regression. Results: The major findings of this study were as follows; 1) approximately 9% of participants had fallen within one year. Study participants reported moderate fear of falling(M=43.80); moderate physical health (M=42.31) and mental health(M=46.05); and low depression status(M=10.38). 2) there were significant differences in fear of falling according to gender, experience of falling, exercise, and depression. 3) significant factors influencing on fear of falling were experience of falling and physical health status. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that nurses working closely with older adults should be taught the impact of previous falls and physical health status on fear of falling and need to reinforce exercise behavior for older adults who are vulnerable to fear of falling.
