  • In conventional analytical solutions for rainfall-induced soil slope stability, the Green-Ampt (1911) equation for estimating the saturation depth and the Skempton & DeLory (1957) equation for calculating the infinite slope shallow failure were compared with the numerical analysis to confirm the error. In the simple evaluation of the reason of soil slope instability due to rainfall using the conventional equations, there are many errors and, overestimation or underestimation of the calculation results. In this study, the equation consisting of the results obtained from infiltration analysis on unsaturated soil slope is proposed by applying the average range of the strength parameters of the granite weathered soils, and its reliability is verified by comparing with the numerical analysis results. The developed equation can be used easily in various fields for the estimation of slope safety factor by checking the rainfall duration and saturation depth.

  • Cast-in-place concrete-filled hollow PC (HPC) columns are used to reduce lifting load of heavy-weight PC columns and to improve the structural integrity of joints. In the present study, a new type of HPC column was proposed to improve the productivity and structural integrity of the concrete. To form the hollow PC columns, a permanent inner form was prefabricated using structural deck plates and penetrated lateral bars. Half-scale specimens of four HPC columns were tested under combined axial compression and lateral cyclic loading to evaluate the seismic resistance. In the design of test specimens, various parameters such as the spacing of lateral re-bars, the use of steel fiber, and the thickness of PC cover were considered. The test results showed that the proposed HPC columns generally exhibited satisfactory load-carrying capacity and deformation capacity without brittle failure of PC. If closely spaced hoops or fiber reinforcements are used for PC, the deformation capacity can be improved further by restraining PC spalling.

  • This paper presented an structural efficiency of steel coupling beam jointed single plate shear connections with seat and top angle. Parameters for the test specimens were are seat and top angle, reinforcing of concrete, embedded length, section loss. Steel coupling beam with angle showed excellent strength, stiffness, energy dissipation capacity. The specimen with no reinforcement around the embedded steel plate showed slightly low deformation capacity because of early failure in the precast concrete walls. However, the specimen with reinforcement around the embedded steel plate showed good deformation capacity. Deformation capacity was not decrease despite short embedded length. The specimen with section loss showed excellent deformation capacity. Because shear strength of steel coupling beam was lesser than of connections. These results showed that for workability and cost efficiency, the proposed system is promising for one of steel coupling beam.

  • The development of strain localization within shear zones is frequently observed during soil deformation. In fact, the phenomenon appears to be more often the norm rather than the exception. Conceptually, any soil condition that renders negative work increment is prone to localization. In this study, a broad range of soil and loading conditions are investigated to test this criterion, including: dilative soil subjected to drained shear (standard case), contractive soil sheared under undrained conditions, cavitation in dilative soil in undrained shear, inhomogeneous soils, particle alignment in contractive soils made of platy particles, soils that experience particle crushing, and the shear of low-moisture and/or lightly cemented loose soils. Unique specimens and test procedures are designed to separately test each of these soil conditions in the laboratory According to experimental test results, soil specimens with post-peak strain softening behavior are prone to progressive failure, localization of deformations, and shear banding. The state of stress, the soil density, inherent mechanical and geometrical properties of soil particles, low water content, and heterogeneity can contribute to triggering strain localization. Considering all possible cases of localization, the best method to obtain the critical state line in the laboratory is to use contractive homogeneous specimens subjected to drained shear.

  • This paper considers a Bayesian approach to replacement policy following the expiration of non-renewing combination warranty. The non-renewing combination warranty is the combination of the non-renewing free replacement warranty and the non-renewing pro-rata replacement warranty. We use the criterion based on the expected cost and the expected downtime to determine the optimal replacement period. To do so, we obtain the expected cost rate per unit time and the expected downtime per unit time, respectively. When the failure times are assumed to follow a Weibull distribution with uncertain parameters, we propose the optimal replacement policy based on the Bayesian approach. The overall value function suggested by Jiang and Ji (2002) is utilized to determine the optimal replacement period. Also, the numerical examples are presented for illustrative purpose.

  • This study developed a shear strength prediction model of FRP strengthened reinforced concrete beams in shear. The primary design parameters were shear crack angle and shear span to depth ratio of FRP reinforcement. Of primary concern In the suggested model was the FRP debonding failure, which Is a typical fracture mode of RC beams strengthened with FRP, The proposed model used a crack sliding model based on modified plasticity theory. To address the effect of the shear span to depth ratio, the arch action was considered in the proposed model. The proposed model was applied to RC beams strengthened with FRP. The results showed that the proposed model agree with test results.

  • The present study was made based on the zero extension line theory and the well-known Mononobe-Okabe's to determine the dynamic earth pressures acting on the retaining walls. The zero extension line theory, which was proposed by Roscoe et al., assumes the coincidence between the loci of failure and the zero extension lines in soil mass. ln order to compute the dynamic earth pressure developed by an earthquake, it was assumed that for the vertical retaining walls with no surcharge, the backfill materials are dense and cohesionless sandy soils, there are no changes in soil parameters during earthquake, and the horizontal earthquake intensity is considered. The effects of horizontal earthquake intensity, internal friction angle of soil, wall friction angle and dilation angle, on the earth pressure coefficients were analysed. Final1y, the presented theories were successfully compared with the Mononobe-Okabe's as well.

  • Wilson disease (WD) is an autosomal recessive disorder of copper metabolism that results in accumulation of copper primarily in the liver, the brain and the cornea. Mutations in the WD gene, ATP7B cause failure of copper excretion from hepatocyte into bile and a defective synthesis of ceruloplasmin. More than 370 mutations are now recognized, scattering throughout the ATP7B gene. Since WD has protean clinical presentations, awareness of WD in clinical practice is important for the early diagnosis and prevention of accumulated copper toxicity. None of the laboratory parameters alone allows a definite diagnosis of WD. There are numerous pitfalls in the diagnosis of WD. Low serum ceruloplasmin concentrations, increased 24 hour urinary copper excretion, increased hepatic copper concentrations and the presence of Kayser-Fleischer rings in the cornea are major diagnostic points. A combination of any two of these 4 laboratory findings is strong support for a diagnosis of WD. Molecular methods are now being used to aid diagnosis. Molecular genetic testing has confirmed the diagnosis in individuals in whom the diagnosis is not clearly established biochemically and clinically. Siblings should be screened for WD once an index case has been diagnosed. Discrimination of heterozygotes from asymptomatic patients is essential to avoid inappropriate lifelong therapy for heterozygotes. Genetic testing, either by haplotype analysis or by mutation analysis, is the only reliable tool for differentiating heterozygote carriers from affected asymptomatic patients. Currently, genetic testing is of limited value in the primary diagnosis. However, genetic testing will soon play an essential role in diagnosing WD as rapid advancement of biomedical technology will allow more rapid, easier and less expensive mutation detection.

  • Chattering in cutting operations are usually a cumbersome part of the manufacturing process in mechanical. Particular, machining performance such as that of the boring process is limited by cutting condition at the movable components. Among various sources of chatter vibration, detrimental point in cutting condition is found a mechanical condition on overhang. It limits cutting speed, depth, surface roughness and tool wear failure as result because the all properties are varying with the metal removal process. In this case, we have to observe the resonance frequencies of a boring bar for continuous cutting. In the established research, boring bar vibration of cutting system has been measured with the aid of accelerometer. However, the inherent parameters of internal turning operations are severely limit for the real time monitoring on accelerometers. At this point, this paper is proposed other method for real time monitoring during continuous cutting with optical fiber at the inside of boring bar. This method has been used a plastic fiber in the special jig on boring bar by based on experimental modal analysis. In this study, improvement of monitoring system on continuous internal cutting was attempted using optical fiber sensor of inside type because usually chattering is investigated experimentally measuring the variation in chip thickness. It is demonstrated that the optical fiber sensor is possibility to measure of chattering with real time in boring process.

  • Failure of in vitro fertilization may occur even though oocyte and semen parameters seem satisfactory. Quantified ultrastructural study of spermatozoa was performed in three cases of failed in vitro fertilization. The results were compared to those of four fertile men. Quantification was achieved by cataloguing cell defects of the spermatozoon heads and mid/principal pieces of the flagella. Using the data from each specimen, the percentages of total cellular abnormalities in the head/mid/principal pieces were established. The percentages of anomalies of the midpiece and of the principal piece were not significantly different between failed cases and controls. The percentage of cell alterations of the head (96-100 vs 75${\pm}$3,4%), the percentage of combined anomalies of the head (80-86 vs 52.5${\pm}$1.9%), and the percentages of nuclear shape deformation (68-86 vs 47.5${\pm}$6.3%), acrosomal defects (86-96 vs 50${\pm}$4.3%), and postacrosomal sheath defects (78-88 vs 44.5${\pm}$7.2%) of the head were significantly different between failed cases and controls. Due to the cost and time involved in processing semen samples for electron microscopy, the widespread application of this technique to all couples presenting for IVF certainly is not warranted. However, in selected instances electron microscopy may play a crucial role in identifying an occult male factor.
