  • In order to understand the probabilistic nature of fatigue crack propagation, not only the calculation of failure probability and parameter sensitivity, but also the clarification of probabilistic nature of various parameters should be executed. Therefore a method to evalute synthetically the effect of each parameter on the distribution of fatigue crack propagation life is required. In this study, the effects of the initial crack size and other paramaters on the distribution of fatigue crack propagation life are discussed according to the appropriate normalization of the life distribution, the validity of this method is also shown. Such an investigation as the present work may be useful to understand the nature of the life distribution and to utilize the probailistic fracture mechanics.

  • In a nuclear power plant, reactor pressure vessel (RPV) is the primary pressure boundary component that must be protected against failure. The neutron irradiation on RPV in the beltline region, however, tends to cause localized damage accumulation, leading to crack initiation and propagation which raises RPV integrity issues. The objective of this paper is to estimate the integrity of RPV under hot leg leaking accident by applying the finite element analysis. In this paper, a parametric study was performed for various crack configurations based on 3-dimensional finite element models. The crack configuration, the crack orientation, the crack aspect ratio and the clad thickness were considered in the parametric study. The effect of these parameters on the maximum allowable nil-ductility transition reference temperature ($(RT_{NDT})$) was investigated on the basis of finite element analyses.

  • By using the finite element method, the Oyane's ductile fracture integral I was calculated from the histories of stress and strain according to every element and then the forming limit of hydroforming process could be evaluated. The fracture initiation site and the forming limit for two typical hydroforming processes, tee extrusion and bumper rail under different forming conditions are predicted in this study. For tee extrusion hydroforming process, the pressure level has significant influence on the forming limit. When the expansion area is backed by a supporter and bulged, the process would be more stable and the possibility of bursting failure is reduced. For bumper rail, the ductile fracture integral i is not only affected by the process parameters, but also by the shape of preforming blank. Due to no axial feeding on the end side of the blank, the possibility of cracking in hydroforming of the bumper rail is influenced by the friction condition more strongly than that of the tee extrusion. All the simulation results show reasonable plastic deformation, and the applications of the method could be extended to a wide range of hydroforming processes.

  • This paper represents a new method for computing reliability indices by using Large Deviation method which is one of the probabilistic production cost simulations. The reliability measures are based on the models used for the loads and for the generating unit failure states. In computing these measures it has been tacitly assumed that the values of all parameters in the models are precisely known. In fact, however, some of these values must often be chosen with a considerable degree of uncertainty involved. This is particularly true for the forecast peak loads in the load model, where there is an inherent uncertainty in the method of forecasting, which are frequently based on insufficient statistics. In this paper, the effect of load forecasting uncertainty on the LOLP(Loss of Load Probability), is investigated. By applying the Large Deviation method to the IEEE Rilability Test System, it is verified that the proposed method is generally very accurate and very fast for computing system reliability indices.

  • This numerical study investigated the effects of different reinforcing details in beam-column joints on the blast resistance of the joints. Due to increasing manmade and/or natural high rate accidents such as impacts and blasts, the resistance of critical civil and military infrastructure or buildings should be sufficiently obtained under those high rate catastrophic loads. The beam-column joint in buildings is one of critical parts influencing on the resistance of those buildings under extreme events such as earthquakes, impacts and blasts. Thus, the details of reinforcements in the joints should be well designed for enhancing the resistance of the joints under the events. Parameters numerically investigated in this study include diagonal, flexural, and shear reinforcing steel bars. The failure mechanism of the joints could be controlled by the level of tensile stress of reinforcing steel bars. Among various reinforcing details in the joints, diagonal reinforcement in the joints was found to be most effective for enhancing the resistance under blast loads. In addition, shear reinforcements also produced favourable effects on the blast resistance of beam-column joints.

  • Self-piercing riveting (SPR) is receiving more recognition as a possible and effective solution for joining automotive body panels and structures, particularly for aluminum parts and dissimilar parts. In this study, static strength and fatigue tests were conducted using coach-peel and cross-tension specimens with Al-5052 plates for evaluation of fatigue strength of the SPR joints. For the static experiment results, the fracture modes are classified into pull-out fracture due to influence of plastic deformation of joining area. During the fatigue tests for the coach-peel and cross-tension specimens with Al-5052, interface failure mode occurred on the top substrate close to the rivet head in the most cycle region. There were relationship between applied load amplitude $P_{amp}$ and life time of cycle N, $P_{amp}=715.5{\times}N^{-0.166}$ and $P_{amp}=1967.3{\times}N^{-0.162}$ were for the coach-peel and cross- tension specimens, respectively. The finite element analysis results for specimens were adopted for the parameters of fatigue lifetime prediction. The relation between SWT fatigue parameter and number of cycles was found to be $SWT=192.8N_f^{-0.44}$.

  • Decision models are an attempt to reduce uncertainty in the decision making process. The models describe the relationships of variables and given proper input data generate solutions to managerial problems. These solutions may not be answers to the problems for one of two reasons. First, the data input into the model may not be consistant with the underlying assumptions of the model being used. Frequently parameters are assumed to be deterministic when in fact they are probabilistic in nature. The second failure is that often the decision maker recognizes that the data available are not appropriate for the model being used and begins to collect the required data. By the time these data has been compiled the solution is no longer an answer to the problem. This relates to the timeliness of decision making. The authors point out throught the use of an illustrative problem that stocastic models are well developed and that they do not suffer from any lack of mathematical exactiness. The primary problem is that generally accepted procedures for data generation are historical in nature and not relevant for probabilistic decision models. The authors advocate that management information system designers and accountants must become more familiar with these decision models and the input data required for their effective implementation. This will provide these professionals with the background necessary to generate data in a form that makes it relevant and timely for the decision making process.

  • E-Actuator is an essential part of an eVGT, it receives the command from the main ECU and controls the vane. An e-Actuator failure can cause an abrupt change in engine output and it may induce an accident. Therefore, it is required to detect anomalies in the e-Actuator in real time to prevent accidents. In this paper, an e-Actuator fault detection method using on-line parameter identification is proposed. To implement on-line fault detection algorithm, many constraints are considered. The test input and sampling rate are selected considering the constraints. And new recursive system identification algorithm is proposed which reduces the memory and MCU power dramatically. The relationship between the identified parameters and real elements such as gears, spring and motor are derived. The fault detection method using the relationship is proposed. The experiments with the real broken gears show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. It is expected that the real time fault detection is possible and it can improve the safety of eVGT system.
