  • Olefins are the most important feedstock in the petrochemical industry and thus the separation of olefin/paraffin mixtures is crucial to that industry. At present, this separation is mostly carried out using cryogenic distillation processes that require enormous capital investment and have high operational costs.(omitted)

  • Polymer membranes are cheap and easy in fabrication, and show a high permeability and selectivity, thus play pivotal roles in gas separation as well as water purification. However, polymer membranes typically exhibit the trade-off relation between permeability and selectivity; i.e. when the permeability is high, the selectivity is low and vice versa. Facilitated transport has been considered one of the solutions to address this issue. Over the last decades, facilitated transport concept had played an important role in preparing the membranes and providing ideal and various models for the transport. Understanding the nature of carrier, the mobility of matrix and the physico-chemical properties of polymer composites are crucial for facilitated transport. Depending on the mobility of carrier, facilitated transport membrane is classified into three; mobile carrier membrane, semi-mobile carrier membrane, fixed-site carrier membrane. Also, there are four types of reversible reaction between the carrier and the specific target; proton transfer reaction, nucleophilic addition reaction, p-complexation reaction and electrochemical reaction. The facilitated transport membranes have been applied in the separation of CO2, O2 and olefin (propylene or ethylene). In this review, major challenges surrounding facilitated transport membranes and the strategies to tackle these challenges are given in detail.

  • Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), which is glassy polymer to have amide functional group, was induced to fabricate the facilitated olefin transport membranes for olefin/paraffin separation. Separation performance for the mixed gas consisting of propylene and propane (50 : 50 vol%) was measured by gas chromatography and bubble flow meter. The properties of membranes were confirmed by scanning electron microscope and FT-IR. The results of long-term separation tests showed the selectivity of 15 and permeance of 1.3 GPU. The membranes was compared with poly(2-ethyl-2-oxazoline) $(POZ)/AgBF_4/Al(NO_3)_3$ membranes and the characteristics were confirmed as polymer matrix for facilitated transport membranes.

  • This study was a study on an facilitated transport membrane to replace the cryogenic separation method currently used in olefin/paraffin separation. Cost reduction is also a very important factor to commercialize facilitated transport membranes. However, AgBF4, which has been studied a lot, is a relatively expensive silver salt. To replace this, a PEBAX-2533/ AgCF3SO3/Al(NO3)3 composite film was prepared using relatively inexpensive AgCF3SO3. It was analyzed through SEM, FT-IR, and RAMAN. Through this study, it was confirmed that the polymer matrix affects the long-term stability.

  • The origin of large difference of selectivity of $C_3H_6$ over $C_3H_8$ between pure gas and mixed gas through silver polymer electrolyte membranes is investigated. Firstly, the effect of feed condition on the permeance of mixture gas ($C_3H_6/C_3H^8$) and the separation performance is examined. Upon decrease of the $C_3\;H_6$ concentration, the $C_3H_6$ permeance decreased whereas the permeance of $C_3H_8$ increased, resulting in the decrease of the selectivity of $C_3H_6/C_3H_8/.$ This result is ascribed to the $C_3H_6$-induced plasticization of membranes. Experimental results were validated by means of mathematical modeling, where pressure independent permeabilities were used.

  • This paper has applied a simple model to the mass transfer mechanism of Cr(VI) with crownether in a batch-type, supported liquid membrane module. Concentration at pH 3 are as follows : 0.012 kmol/$m^3{\le}$18-crown-6${\le}$0.036 kmol/$m^3$ and 20 g/$m^3{\le}$ Cr(VI)${\le}$500 g/$m^3$. The measured values of forward- and backward-reaction rate constants between Cr(VI) and 18-crown-6 were used to simulate the model with the mass conservation equation and associated boundary conditions. Comparison between the experimental and simulated facilitated factor of Cr(VI) transport led to classification of reaction regions.

  • Cellulose nitrate (CN) composite membranes, containing cobalt porphyrin (CoP) complexes self-assembled within nanometer-sized rhenium clusters (ReCoP), have been prepared and their oxygen and nitrogen gas permeabilities were analyzed. The solubility of ReCoP and the characteristics of the corresponding composite membranes were analyzed using a Cahn microbalance, FT-IR spectroscopy, wide-angle X-ray scattering, and differential scanning calorimetry. The nitrogen permeability through the CN composite membranes decreased upon addition of ReCoP and CoP, which implies that the presence of these oxygen carrier complexes affects the structure of the polymer matrix. The oxygen permeability through the composite membranes containing small quantities of ReCoP decreased, but it increased upon increasing the concentration. The oxygen gas transport was affected by the matrix at low ReCoP concentrations, but higher concentrations of ReCoP increased the oxygen permeability as a result of its reversible and specific interactions with oxygen, effectively realizing ReCoP carrier-mediated oxygen transport.
