Sliding mode control is a powerful control methodology for the control of uncertain systems. However, it and its variations have some disadvantages such as chattering and imprecise tracing performance. A novel scheme of the sliding mode control is presented for the accurate tracking control of the uncertain systems. The fuzzy logic-baced control law maintaining stability and consistent performance in the face of modeling imprecise is derived and simulation results showing its effectiveness are presented.

This article suggests an inverse kinematics analysis of a two degree of freedom spatial parallel motion simulator and design methodology of the robust PID controller. The parallel motion simulator consists of a fixed base and a moving frame connected by two serial chains, with each serial chain containing one revolute joint and two passive spherical joint. First, an inverse kinematics problems are solved in order to find the joint variable necessary to bring the end effector to track the desired trajectory. Second, an inverse optimal PID controller is proposed to track trajectories in the face of uncertainty. And the $H_{\infty}$ optimality and robust stability of the closed-loop system is acquired through the PID controller. Finally numerical results show the effectiveness of the PID controller that is designed by square/linear tuning laws.

Papermaking technology has drastically improved over the last 20 years to face new challenges. Because environmental regulations have become increasingly strict, papermaking systems have had to accommodate elevated recycled pulp content and an increased use of recycled process water. Process water in papermaking systems has become more dirtier and reduced polymer efficiency. Amphoteric PAM demonstrated a higher degree of stability in a high conductivity environment compared to cationic PAM. This was illustrated by the improved retention performance, particularly the ash retention. This amphoteric polymer can be used for board or newsprint production using recycled pulp, especially for the systems where polymer dissolving water is high in conductivity and degradation of cationic functional groups of cationic PAM can occur.

Even though the recent development trend of wind turbine systems has been focused on larger MW Classes, the small-scale wind turbine system has been continuously developed because it has some advantages due to easy personnel establishment and use with low cost and energy saving effect. This work is to propose a specific structural design and analysis procedure for development of a low noise 500W class small wind turbine system which will be applicable to relatively low wind speed region like Korea. The proposed structural feature has a skin-spar-foam sandwich composite structure with the E-glass/Epoxy face sheets and the Urethane foam core for lightness, structural stability, low manufacturing cost and easy manufacturing process. Moreover this type of structure has good behaviors for reduction of vibration and noise. Structural analysis including load cases, stress, deformation, buckling and vibration was performed using the Finite Element Method. In order to evaluate the designed blade structure the structural tests were done, and their test results were compared with the estimated results.
The purpose of this work is to gain a better understanding of the interrelationships between geological structures and slope failure in sedimentary rocks. In the studied slopes, construction-related slope failure could only be observed on the south-dipping slopes. This indicates that slope stability may be dependent on the angular relationships between the dip direction of bedding and the orientation of the slope. Slope failure continued, post-construction, around large fault zones in the studied outcrop; these fault damage zones are, however, not easily recognized in the field. Here we suggest a new method that uses accumulated fracture density to precisely identify fault damage zones. Multiple-faced slopes are now increasingly being exposed during large-scale construction projects in South Korea. This multiple-faced slope analysis indicates that the stability of a slope should be evaluated by identifying domains, through the analysis of possible slopes and their angular relationships with bedding and other discontinuities, prior to construction. Therefore, careful consideration of geological structures such as bedding and other discontinuities, and their angular relationships during the design of cuttings through sedimentary rocks, will increase the efficiency of construction and enable the safe construction of more stable slopes that will retain their stability after construction.
The cut-slope of a large-sectional tunnel portal is recognized as a potential area of weakness due to unstable stress distribution and possible permanent displacement. This paper presents a case study of a slope failure and remediation for a large-scale cut-slope at a tunnel portal. Extensive rock-slope brittle failure occurred along discontinuities in the rock mass after 46 mm of rainfall, which caused instability of the upper part of the cut-slope. Based on a geological survey and face mapping, the reason for failure is believed to be the presence of thin clay fill in discontinuities in the weathered rock mass and consequent saturationinduced joint weakening. The granite-gneiss rock mass has a high content of alkali-feldspar, indicating a vulnerability to weathering. Immediately before the slope failure, a sharp increase in displacement rate was indicated by settlement-time histories, and this observation can contribute to the safety management criteria for slope stability. In this case study, emergency remediation was performed to prevent further hazard and to facilitate reconstruction, and counterweight fill and concrete filling of voids were successfully applied. For ultimate remediation, the grid anchor-blocks were used for slope stabilization, and additional rock bolts and grouting were applied inside the tunnel. Limit-equilibrium slope stability analysis and analyses of strereographic projections confirmed the instability of the original slope and the effectiveness of reinforcing methods. After the application of reinforcing measures, instrumental monitoring indicated that the slope and the tunnel remained stable. This case study is expected to serve as a valuable reference for similar engineering cases of large-sectional slope stability.
In the present study, a method of quasi-three dimensional stability analysis is proposed for a systematic design of the GRS-RW(Geosynthetic-Reinforced Soil Retaining Wall) system based on the postulated three dimensional failure wedge. The proposed method could be applied to the analysis of the stability of both the straight-line and cove-shaped are. As with skew reinforcements. Maximum earth thrust expected to act on the rigid face wall is assumed to distribute along the depth, and wall displacements are predicted based on both the assumed compaction-induced earth pressures and one dimensional finite element method of analysis. For a verification of the procedure proposed in the present study, the predicted wall displacements are compared with chose obtained from the RMC tests in Canada and the FHWA tests in U.S.A. In these comparisons the wall displacements estimated by the methods of Christopher et at. and Chew & Mitchell are also included for further verification. Also, the predicted wall displacements for the convex-shaped zone reinforced with skew reinforcements are compared with those by $FLAC_{3D}$ program analyses. The assumed compaction-induced earth pressures evaluated on the basic of the proposed method of analysis are further compared with the measurements by the FHWA best wall. A parametric stduy is finally performed to investigate the effects of various design parameters for the stability of the GRS-RW system
In this study, deformation behavior of existing concrete face rockfill dam, which is raised to a certain height to enhance storage capacity or to improve hydraulic and hydrologic stability, is examined using numerical analysis method. The results obtained from FEM analysis show a possibility that additional fill at downstram slope of existing CFRD dam body may lead undesirable deformations and stresses in existing dam body, especially in face concrete, such as settlements in upper part and bulging in lower part, excessive bending moments, and eventualy tensile cracks. Therefore, in designing multi-staged raising construction of CFRD, it is essential to consider deformations and stresses to be developed within and between exisiting dam body and added parts due to additional fill, and to prepare a proper measure to prevent abnormal deformations and stresses in the dam body including added parts.
This study is to find out the possibility of applying the Blended Learning which combines the advantage of face-to-face classroom instruction and e-Learning to design education. This Blended Loaming Model has five steps such as 'prepare, teach, show, interact, and collaborate'. It is designed by the learning decision points (performance outcomes, content stability and structure, audience size, and so on) and the characteristics of delivery methods(asynchronous, synchronous). This research is based on the learners' satisfaction data of each step. The number of the participants is 27 and a questionnaire with 21 items is administered. Ten items of them are designed with 5-point Likert scales and the rest of them ask learners describe the reason of their selection. The result show that learners are satisfied with the blended learning than the off-line classroom. It is expected that the blended learning can be a substitute of the off-line classroom for the effectiveness of design education.
In the design of tunnel, it contains inaccuracy of data, fuzziness of evaluation, observer error and so on. The face observation during tunnel excavation, therefore, plays an important role to raise stability and to reduce supporting cost. This study is carried out to minimize the subjectiveness of observer and to exactly evaluate the natural properties of ground during the face observation. For these purpose, fuzzy set theory and neuro-fuzzy techniques in artificial intelligent techniques are applied to the inference of the RMR value from the observation data. The correlation between original RMR vague and inferred RM $R_{_FU}$ and RM $R_{_NF}$ values from fuzzy set theory and neuro-fuzzy techniques is investigated using 46 data. The results show that good correlation between original RMR value and infected RM $R_{_FU}$ and RM $R_{_NF}$ value is observed when the correlation coefficients are |R|=0.96 and |R|=0.95 respectively. From these results, applicability of fuzzy set theory and neuro-fuzzy techniques to rock mats classification is proved to be sufficiently high enough. enough.
