Objective: The aim of this study is to classify between intentional and natural blinks in vision based eye tracking system. Through implementing the classification method, we expect that the great eye tracking method will be designed which will perform well both navigation and selection interactions. Background: Currently, eye tracking is widely used in order to increase immersion and interest of user by supporting natural user interface. Even though conventional eye tracking system is well focused on navigation interaction by tracking pupil movement, there is no breakthrough selection interaction method. Method: To determine classification threshold between intentional and natural blinks, we performed experiment by capturing eye images including intentional and natural blinks from 12 subjects. By analyzing successive eye images, two features such as eye closed duration and pupil size variation after eye open were collected. Then, the classification threshold was determined by performing SVM(Support Vector Machine) training. Results: Experimental results showed that the average detection accuracy of intentional blinks was 97.4% in wearable eye tracking system environments. Also, the detecting accuracy in non-wearable camera environment was 92.9% on the basis of the above used SVM classifier. Conclusion: By combining two features using SVM, we could implement the accurate selection interaction method in vision based eye tracking system. Application: The results of this research might help to improve efficiency and usability of vision based eye tracking method by supporting reliable selection interaction scheme.
Several studies of eye-slaved nonverbal communicators have been performed recently. By integrating the eye and head-position monitoring devices, the present authors had developed an eye-controlled human/computer interface based on the line-of-sight and an intentional blink to invoke commands in the preceeding study. As a successive study, this paper examines the characteristics of performing the intentional double blinks experimentally and proposes the double blinks as an alternative triggering method. The applications may extend to several domains such as rehabilitation and virtual reality system with head mounted display.
This study aimed to verify the criteria of the driver monitoring systems proposed by UNECE ACSF informal working group and the ministry of land, infrastructure, and transport of South Korea using driving behavior data. In order to verify the criteria, we investigated the safety regulations of driver monitoring systems in a conditional autonomous vehicle and found that the driver monitoring measures were related to eye blinks times, head movements, and eye closed duration. Thus, we took two different experimental data including real-world driving and simulator-based drowsy driving behaviors in previous studies. The real-world driving data were used for analyzing blink times and head movement intervals, and the drowsiness data were used for eye closed duration. In the real-world driving study, 52 drivers drove approximately 11.0 km of rural road (about 20 min), 7.9 km of urban road (about 25 min), and 20.8 km of highway (about 20 min). The results suggested that the appropriate number of blinks during the last 60 seconds was 4 times, and the head movement interval was 35 seconds. The results from drowsy driving data will be presented in another paper - part 2.
We investigated the change of the blink rate by wearing soft contact lens(SCL). Eight types of soft contact lenses were worn by twelve asymptomatic contact lens wearers. When wearers were worn SCLs for 15 min, the average blink rate was 20.0 blinks/min, which was a statistically significant increase compared to 13.3 blinks/min, the average blink rate of non-SCL-worn eye. After 8 hr of lens wear, the average blink rate was 24.3 blinks/min, and it was 11 blinks/min more than that of non-SCL-worn eye and 4 blinks/min more than that of 15 min SCL-worn eye. There were a little difference of the blink rate in types of lens, which the blink rate range of all lens after 15 min of lens wear was 18.1~20.9 blinks/min and that after 8 hr of lens wear was 22.9~24.9 blinks/min. When wearing A lens(vifilcon, 0.06 mm) having thin center thickness, wearers showing difference of 10.0~11.9 blinks/min between non-SCL-worn eye and 15 min SCL-worn eye reached 16.7% and it was more than that of relatively thick B lens(0.17 mm) and C lens(0.14 mm). This result suggest that the center thickness was not unique factor of the blink rate change and other factors would have synthetically influence on the blink rate change. In the case of B lens and C lens of hilafilcon material but having different center thickness and water content, wearers increasing more than 4.0 blinks/min after 8 hr of lens wear was 58.3% and 41.7%, respectively. This result have provided information that the lenses of similar materials but different center thickness and water content could cause individually the different change of the blink rate.

Generally, human eye blinks are closely associated with the cognitive state or visual attention such as attentional requirements on visual stimuli. These previous studies have reported that eye blinks are related to explicit visual attention using blink rate, pattern and blink timing across subjects. However, these results have been obtained in a well-controlled experimental settings. So, it would prove difficult to investigate human's natural response in a continuous and realistic situation. In our study, we measured the eye blink intervals while participants viewed a movie clip. And we analyzed the blink interval data for relationship between visual attention and eye blink intervals. 24 participants took part in two experimental sessions, first session to measure the IEBI while viewing the movie clip and second session to conduct a memory performance test using a self-questionnaire, which were spaced 3 weeks apart. The results indicate significantly higher memory performance at long IEBI period than short IEBI period while watching a movie clip(t = 3.257, df = 17, p < 0.005, 2-tailed). In addition, memory performance score significantly correlated with the IEBI value(spearman's rho = 0.40, N = 36, p < 0.01, 2-tailed). Our results suggest that IEBI is used to measure or assess visual attention while wiewing the movie that it is capable of simulating aspects of real-life experiences by visual attention. Thus, we expect IEBI to be used to measure or assess our visual attention, cognition, further emotion about not only movies, advertisements and other cultural contents but also cognitive science.

In this paper, a novel drowsiness detection algorithm using eye-blink pattern is proposed. The proposed drowsiness detection model using finite automata makes it easy to detect eye-blink, drowsiness and sleep by checking the number of input symbols standing for closed eye state only. Also it increases the accuracy by taking vertical projection histogram after locating the eye region using the feature of horizontal projection histogram, and minimizes the external effects such as eyebrows or black-framed glasses. Experimental results in eye-blinks detection using the JZU eye-blink database show that our approach achieves more than 93% precision and high performance.
Purpose: This study is to investigate correlation between eye fatigue and letter contrast according to letter contrast changes on monitor display. Methods: Reading speed test were carried out for 53 subjects (mean age: $22.68{\pm}1.85$ years) who have over Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) 1.0, and 45 subjects, who could read over 123 out of 163 letters among 53 subjects were selected. They were asked to read the letters which were composed of Black (contrast 100%), Dark gray (contrast 80%), Gray (contrast 80%), Light gray (contrast 30%) randomly. The change of their eye fatigue by letter contrast on monitor display was measured by monitoring their eyes with an eye-tracker while they were reading letters. Results: Event Duration (sec) was 33.635 for Black, 32.266 Dark gray, 33.936 for Gray, and 34.848 for Light gray. Average of Fixation Duration (sec) was 0.224 for Black, 0.218 for Dark gray, 0.239 for Gray and 0.243 for Light gray. Average of Pupil diameter (mm) was 41.133 mm for Black, 41.160 mm for Dark gray, 40.880 mm for Gray and 40.459 mm for Light gray. Frequency (blinks/sec) was 0.211 for Black, 0.206 for Dark gray, 0.221 for Gray, and 0.238 for Light gray. Conclusions: Event Duration and average of Fixation Duration were the shortest for Dark gray and the longest for Light gray. In average Pupil diameter was the biggest Dark gray and the smallest for Light gray. Blink Frequency (blinks/sec) was the lowest for Dark gray and the highest for Light gray. Visual fatigue by brightness of letters on monitor display was the least for Dark gray followed by Black, Gray and Light gray.
We proposed the device to control a computer with only a head and eye blinks so that disabilities by car accidents can use a computer. Because they have paralysis of their upper extremities such as C4~C5 paraplegics and cerebral palsy, they cannot efficiently access a general keyboard/mouse not using hands and foots. The cursor position was estimated from a gyro-sensor which can measure head movements, and the mouse event such as click/double click from opto-sensors which can detect eye blinks. The sensor was put on the proper goggle in order not to disturb the visual field. The performance of the proposed device was compared to a general optical mouse, and was used both relative and absolute coordinate in cursor positioning control. The recognition rate of click and double-click was 86% of the optical mouse, the speed of cursor movement by the proposed device was not much different from the mouse. The overall accuracy was 80%. Especially, the relative coordinate is more convenience and accuracy than the absolute coordinate, and can reduce the frequency of reset to prevent the accumulative error.
This paper suggests user interface method with wearable computer by means of detecting gaze under HMD, head mounted display, environment. System is derived as follows; firstly, calibrate a camera in HMD, which determines geometrical relationship between monitor and captured image. Second, detect the center of pupil using ellipse fitting algorithm and represent a gazing position on the computer screen. If user blinks or stares at a certain position for a while, message is sent to wearable computer. Experimental results show ellipse fitting is robust against glint effects, and detecting error was 6.5%, and 4.25% in vertical and horizontal direction, respectively.
