  • Physical properties of Yukwa base extruded with glutinous rice flour, rice flour, defatted soy flour, and salt using an twin-screw extruder were investigated. The ingredients were extruded at various moisture contents (16-18%), screw speeds (300 & 400 rpm) at 43.4 kg/hr feed rate. Length and specific volume of Yukwa base increased with decreasing moisture contents. Hunter's color L* values of Yukwa base was higher whereas $a^*\;and\;b^*$ values were lower with increasing moisture content. Water absorption index of Yukwa base increased with increasing moisture contents. X-ray diffraction of Yukwa base showed B type moisture content of 16% and 17% while it showed A type moisture content of 18%. Degree of crystallinity and breaking strength of Yukwa base were the lowest in the moisture content of 16% while the lowest value for hardness was found in the moisture content of 16% and of 17% with screw speed 400 rpm for all samples. In the microstructure of cross section of Yukwa base, air cell size was larger and cell wall was thicker as moisture content increased. The sensory evaluation of the Yukwa base showed that color and flavor were not significantly different among samples, while taste, appearance, mouth feel, and overall preference were higher as moisture contents decreased.

  • To measure rheological properties of the starch dough, an Extrusion Capillary Viscometer(ECV) cell was self-made and attached to Instron machine(Model 1140). Apparent viscosities of corn and waxy corn starch doughs were measured and their gelatinization degrees were determined by enzymatic analysis. When corn and waxy corn starch doughs with $36{\sim}52%$ moisture content were heated at $60{\sim}100^{\circ}C$, come-up time of the cold point of doughs decreased from 220 sec to 140 sec with increased in the moisture content. In the measurement range of $36{\sim}52%$ moisture content and $60{\sim}100^{\circ}C$ heating temperature, both corn and waxy corn starch doughs showed pseudoplastic flow behaviors. At the same shear rate, both shear stress and viscosity of starch dough decreased as the moisture content increased. At the moisture content above 44%, the shear stress and viscosity of starch dough decreased as the heating temperature increased from $60^{\circ}C\;to\;70^{\circ}C$, but increased as the heating temperature increased from $80^{\circ}C\;to\;100^{\circ}C$. When the moisture content increased and heating temperature, the gelatinization degree of starch dough increased from about 10% to about 62%. The gelatinization degree of waxy corn starch dough was $15{\sim}20%$ higher than that of corn starch dough under the same gelatinization conditions. The effects of moisture content on the viscosity of starch dough were examined by Arrhenius equation. As the moisture content increased, viscosity of starch dough decreased. But the effect of moisture content was greater in the range of $80{\sim}100^{\circ}C$ than in the range of $60{\sim}70^{\circ}C$ heating temperature.

  • Ceramic membranes are generally used for various industrial processes operating under extreme conditions because of its high thermal and chemical stability. However, due to the trade-off phenomenon of permeability and mechanical strength, preparation of high permeability-high strength membrane is necessary. In this study, the change in characteristics and performances of ceramic membranes was analyzed depending on the type of polymer binder and its mixing ratio. Because the solubility between solvent and polymer binder was higher in PSf (polysulfone) than in PES (polyethersulfone), the viscosity and discharge pressure of the PSf-based dope solution were higher than those of PES-based dope solution. When PSf was used as a polymer binder, ceramic membrane showed high mechanical strength and low water permeability due to the dense structure. On the other hand, in case of PES, the mechanical strength was slightly reduced and the water permeability was increased. It was confirmed that the optimum mixing ratio of the PSf and PES with high water permeability and mechanical strength was 9:1.

  • Using agar and gelatin as wall materials, onion oil was microencapsulated using the extrusion spraying technology. A sensitive methodology was developed for quantitative determination of the microencapsulation yield through ethyl acetate extraction and gas chromatographic analyses. Optimal conditions for the microencapsulation process consisting of the ratio of [core material, Cm] to [wall material, Wm] ($X_1$), temperature of dispersion fluid ($X_2$), detergent concentration in dispersion fluid ($X_3$), and concentration of emulsifier $(X_4)$ were determined using response surface methodology. The regression model equation for the yield of microencapsulation (Y, %) of onion oil could be predicted as $Y\;=\;97.028571-0.775000\;(X_1)-0.746726\;(X_1){\cdot}(X_1)\;-\;1.100000\;(X_3){\cdot}(X_2)$. The optimal conditions for the microencapsulation of the onion oil were determined as the ratio of [core material] to [wall material] of 4.5 : 5.5 (w/w), the temperature of dispersion fluid of $17.1^{\circ}C$ detergent concentration in dispersion fluid of 0.03%, and the concentration of emulsifier of 0.42%. Results revealed the most stable microcapsule of onion oil could be formed with the highest yield of microencapsulation (more than 95%) under optimal conditions.

  • A unique lightweight string truss deployable bridge assembled by thin-walled fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) and metal profiles was designed for emergency applications. As a new structure, investigations into the static structural performance under the serviceability limit state are desired for examining the structural integrity of the developed bridge when subjected to unsymmetrical loadings characterized by combined torsion and bending. In this study, a full-scale experimental inspection was conducted on a fabricated bridge, and the combined flexural-torsional behavior was examined in terms of displacement and strains. The experimental structure showed favorable strength and rigidity performances to function as deployable bridge under unsymmetrical loading conditions and should be designed in accordance with the stiffness criterion, the same as that under symmetrical loads. In addition, a finite element model (FEM) with a simple modeling process, which considered the multi segments of the FRP members and realistic nodal stiffness of the complex unique hybrid nodal joints, was constructed and compared against experiments, demonstrating good agreement. A FEM-based numerical analysis was thereafter performed to explore the effect of the change in elastic modulus of different FRP elements on the static deformation of the bridge. The results confirmed that the change in elastic modulus of different types of FRP element members caused remarkable differences on the bending and torsional stiffness of the hybrid bridge. The global stiffness of such a unique bridge can be significantly enhanced by redesigning the critical lower string pull bars using designable FRP profiles with high elastic modulus.

  • In this study, fused deposition modellig(FDM) 3D printing technology has been applied directly to polyester voil fabric to produce 3D printed lace/voil composite fabrics. A stereolithograpy(STL) file with a lace type 3D modelling under the various thickness were prepared and transformed into a g-code file using a g-code generator. The extrusion conditions for FDM 3D printing were controlled by 50mm/s of nozzle speed, $235^{\circ}C$ of nozzle temperature, $40^{\circ}C$ of heating bed temperature. 3D printed lace/voil composite fabriscs manufactured by 3D printing based on FDM using a thermoplactic polyurethane(TPU) filaments were obtained. To evaluate the mechanical properties and washability of the fabricated 3D printed lace/voil composite fabric, KES-FB system test, washing fastness test and dry cleaning resistance test were conducted. As 3D printing thickness increased, KOSHI, NUMERI, and FUKURAMI of 3D printed lace/voil composite fabric increased. From the results of the primary hand value test, 3D printed lace/voil composite fabrics were confirmed to be applicable to women's summer garments. As a result of the washability and dry cleaning resistance test of the 3D printed lace/voil composite fabrics, all samples were graded 4-5.

  • As a work on the preparation of spread type product using chungkook-jang, proximate composition and enzyme activity of chungkook-jang were analyzed and extrusion capillary viscometer was made. The effects of moisture content, oil type and content and temperature on the rheological properties of chungkook-jang spread were investigated. As the moisture content of chungkook-jang spread increased from 55% to 65%, apparent viscosity $({\eta}a)$ decreased and spreadibility and L value in Hunter color system increased. On the contrary, as the added oil content of chungkook-jang spread increased from 10% to 30%, rla increased and spreadibility and L value decreased. Specially, in case of palm olefin addition, the rla of chungkook-jang spread was more high than that of soybean oil addition. As the temperature of chungkook-jang spread increased, rla decreased and spreadibility increased. In the same conditions, the ${\eta}a$ of chungkook-jang spread increased in order of B. natto, B. natto and B. subtilis mixture and B. subtilis fermentation.

  • Trauma from occlusion (TFO) is a pathologic alterations which develop in the periodontium as a result of undue masticatory force. The purpose of this article is to review the controversies about TFO. There are evidences that TFO is a risk factor in the progression of periodontitis. Tooth mobility should be reduced by selective occlusal adjustment. TFO can be developed dependent on the masticatory pattern, occlusion and anterior overbite in sound periodontal conditions. Secondary TFO may aggravate unstable occlusion. If "loss of posterior support" was occur, the problems were worsen. Extrusion, migration, rotation and pathologic deviation can be resulted. Opposite contention is the "shortened dental arch" concept. However, these two concepts persue the occlusal stability together. To treat TFO adequately, exact diagnosis and multi-disciplinary treatment should be needed.

  • Self-piercing rivet is sheet joining method. It is being used more to join aluminum alloy sheets. Self-piercing riveting is a large-deformation process that involves piercing. The self-piercing rivet, under the press from the punch, pierces the top sheet and forms a mechanical interlock with the bottom sheet. In this study, forging process was designed for manufacturing self-piercing rivet. The forging process has been simulated by using commercial FEM code DEFORM-2D. In simulation of forging process for manufacturing rivet, process sequence, formability, forging load, and distributions of stress and strain were investigated. The suitable forging process could be designed by comparisons of simulation results. The developed process consists of four stages: upsetting, first chamfering, back extrusion, and second chamfering. The simulated results for forging process were confirmed by experimental trials with the same conditions.

  • In this study, we report on the catalyst process installed in conjunction with a wet plasma electrostatic precipitator to remove the oil mist and fine dust emitted from large-size grill restaurants. The multi-stage catalyst module reduced odor through catalytic reaction of acetaldehyde on catalysts even at an ambient temperature with ozone as an oxidant readily produced in a wet plasma electrostatic precipitator. Two types of manganese-based catalysts, $Mn_2O_3$ and $CuMnO_x$ were fabricated by extrusion molding for structured catalysts in practical applications, and the optimum conditions for high removal efficiencies of acetaldehyde and ozone were determined. When two optimized catalysts were applied in a two-stage catalyst module, the removal efficiency of acetaldehyde and ozone were ${\geq}85%$ and 100% respectively at the space velocity of $10,000h^{-1}$ and the reaction temperature of $100^{\circ}C$.
