  • In the extrusion process, the working material is forced to flow through a die with the desired profile. In general, the width of an extruded section is limited to about an inch less than the diameter of the round billet. But through the lip die, material is spreaded to produce a wider extruded section than the diameter of round billet. In this study, the extrusion process of an aluminum plate using the lip die is investigated. The width of the extruded plate is 450mm that is formed from the round billet with a diameter of 250mm. The flow characteristic through the lip die is considered to produce the wide-extruded plate with a small billet using rigid plastic FE analysis. Based on the result of FE analysis, new designs of lip die are proposed.

  • Generally, forging process has been known to enhance most of the mechanical properties by developing the continuous metal flow across the forged stocks. However, we have found out that forging of Al 6061 did not always give the enhancement of the mechanical properties but the degradation of the original characteristics, especailly for a extruded Al 6061. There are several candidates for the culprit of this unfavorable phenomenon. We have been trying to clear out the cause of the mechanical degradation of the forged a extruded Al 6061. One of the most plausible causes seems to be that the particles containing Mn and/or Cr is coarsened and redistributed preferencially onto grain boundaries due to a repetitive exposure in an elevated temperature condition. On the other hand, a continuously cast Al 6061 did not show any strength degradation after a hot forging under the same process condition with the extruded Al 6061.

  • An upper bound elemental technique(UBET) has been carried out to predict the forming load, the deformation pattern and the extruded length of the lateral extrusion of a spider for the automotive universal joint. For the upper bound analysis, a kinematically admissible velocity field(KAVF) is proposed. From the proposed velocity field, the upper bound load, the deformation pattern and the average length of the extruded billets are determined by minimizing the total energy consumption rate which is a function of unknown velocities at each element. Experiments are carried out with antimony-lead billets at room temperature using the rectangular shaped punch. The theoretical prediction of the forming load, the deformation pattern and the extruded length are good in agreement with the experimental results.

  • Aluminium extruded panel is the most important element for sound insulation in a express train. However, comparing with the flat plate with the same weight, the extruded panel shows remarkably low sound transmission loss above the 1st local resonance frequency, which is determined by the dimension of the core structure. Preceding study showed the possibility of the improvement of sound insulation performance by properly designing the core dimension. By the proper core design, local resonance frequency shifts to higher frequency region without any reduction of bending or torsional strength and without any weight increase. Based upon this result, this study investigates in detail the design modification of the core structure of the aluminium extruded panel used in a express train under development, in aspect of sound insulation. Design result is compared with those of other developed models.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the low temperature performance and strength characteristics of V-based extruded homogeneous SCR. The extruded catalyst and the coated catalyst showed 50% and 27% of NOx conversion performance respectively at about $210^{\circ}C$ of catalyst temperature, so the extruded SCR was higher in de-NOx performance than the coated SCR especially at a low temperature zone. The compressive strength of the Enhanced Extrusion #1, in which the content of promoters such as silica, clay, glass fiber and binder was optimized, was a 120% improvement compared to the Extrusion#1 catalyst, higher than the coated SCR.

  • Frame structures of High speed train are constructed from corrugated panel and aluminum extruded panel, which have high bending stiffness. Transmission loss of those panels, however, is less satisfactory than other panels with same mass per unit area. Therefore, this study predicted transmission loss of aluminum extruded panels using Finite element method. Specifically, we modeled acoustic cavity above a radiation surface and analyzed correlation between T-slot and transmission loss. Moreover, we examined the effect of boundary condition changes of the structure on transmission.

  • Two hundred and ten post-larvae (PL) of Macrobrachium rosenbergii (14.5-14.9 mg) were equally distributed in two experimental groups and fed with either steam cooked or extruded pellet for a period of 60 days. Physical evaluation and growth promoting effect of both the pellets were assessed. Significantly higher (p<0.05) water stability, absorption and protein efficiency ratio (PER) were recorded in extruded pellet than the steam cooked pellet. Nutrient loss was minimum in the extruded pellet for which lower feed conversion ratio (FCR) (p<0.05) was recorded in this group. However, weight gain, relative growth and specific growth rate (SGR) in both the groups were not significantly different (p>0.05). Although insignificant (p>0.05) but higher amylase activity was recorded in steam pellet fed group. Survival was not affected by feeding either of the diets.

  • We studied the historical changes of intervertebral disc displacement using magnetic resonance imaging. The phenomenon of the spontaneous regression of herniated discs is well known. The case of a 40-years-old male presenting with a large disc herniation at L5-S1, experiencing severe sciatic pain, and having the straight leg raising test positive at 25 degrees is presented. The extruded disc was documented by clinical examination. He was treated conservatively with epidural steroid injection (ESI), medication, physical therapy and self-exercise and reevaluated in 10 weeks later, 30 and 1 year. Large extruded disc can be treated successfully by physical therapy with ESI. However, the degeneration and the dehydration of disc result in decrease of disc height. Consequently, the regression of extruded disc might have been due to the resorption and the dehydration.
